      Numbers 31
13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army-the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds-who returned from the battle.
15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

It wasn't just the vets coming back from Vietnam, it was ALL vets. I was a 20 year old sailor in electronics school in San Francisco in 1967 and the libs hated us all, just like today. One reason that doesn't happen today is that the vets from my (and G.O.F.) time is that we made up our mind the next generation of soldiers, sailors, and marines would be treated with some respect for the sacrifices they make.

    • @davidsoule1252

Ask him! And keep asking! My father's WWII experience are mostly lost. Tell him you will help him write his story. I am a Vietnam Veteran, U.S. Navy. We had it easier than those on the ground. My father took most of his WWII experiences to his grave. I have only recently told members of my family how bad it was at times during the Vietnam War and I included some examples. One of my brothers and my granddaughter encouraged me to write my story. My granddaughter told me that she would help me write my story. Their encouragement was all I needed. I wrote an 8 page memo. Most of the pages were about Vietnam. 1970 deployment, mostly off the coast of S Vietnam was easy. Gunline off the coast of S. Vietnam, escorting carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin and many ports. The deployment in 1972 was different. It started the same for 2 months. Easy until, then came the Easter Offensive of 1972. I was an FTG aboard USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16. We set up the computer and radar to fire the ship's guns. Strauss and USS Buchanan DDG-14 were operating near the DMZ when the Easter Offensive started. On Easter Saturday, April 1, 1972 Strauss received counterbattery for the first time since I was aboard Strauss. Hundreds of close splashes nearby Strauss. We ponded back! Easter Sunday, April 2, 1972 was worse. Strauss received a call for fire like no other while I was aboard. Strauss and Buchanan were pounded by enemy fire for hours. Both ships pounded back. Later we learned that the Easter Offensive had started. Our ship's allowed Captain John Ripley to blow up Dong Ha Bridge.

You would be on watch and it would be real quiet and then you would hear thoomp thoomp thoomp and you knew mortars were coming and there was no place to hid and I would just sit on my foxhole and shake. I never jumped in my foxhole because I didn't want a ready made coffin.

Hi Joe I have a passage from Ernst Jünger which left an impression on me. “…you must imagine you are securely tied to a post, being threatened by a man swinging a heavy hammer. Now the hammer has been taken back over his head, ready to be swung, now it’s cleaving the air towards you, on the point of touching your skull, then it’s struck the post, and splinters are flying - that’s what it’s like to experience heavy shelling in an exposed position.”

@@freedomisbrightestindungeons the US misread the North’s long term intentions. The US was convinced the North would be a puppet to China and the Soviets but they just wanted independence, unfortunately it just happened to be under a Communist influenced leader under Ho Chi Minh. Hi Chi Minh was hopeful the US would help propagate Vietnamese independence after WW2 but we were too focused on Communism. Even the Chinese and Soviets were a little concerned that the Vietnamese weren’t really strong communists but just using them to gain independence. US should have used diplomacy to stick a wedge in between China/Soviet Union and Vietnam, versus fighting this war, which is exactly what the US is doing now. But it was politically impossible at the time because any President would be branded as being “soft on Communism” if they attempted this versus fighting the war.
