I just broke my plastic oboe tenon and cried for an hour thinking it was non-reparable. I now have hope.

Compliments. You sir, are an artist! What sort of cement/glue/epoxy did you use?

how did drive the upper joint when turning the new tenon blank? Did you put the crown in the chuck?

Also, where did you purchase the tapered reamer for the bore? I’ve been machining the tapered ID on the lathe before gluing in the new tenon.

I made the reamer on the lathe from silver steel, then cut the flute on a milling machine. You have to grind and polish the cutting edge afterwards to get a smooth cut.

@@danhoenigman2757 I can't remember. I measured up several oboes and came up with a profile that will work on most.

What is the tool on the headstock holding the oboe in the lathe?

    • @richardcraigwoodwind6087

I made a series of wooden tapered pegs and receivers with a morse taper shank that fits into the headstock spindle. The instrument is just held between the headstock and tailstock by friction, so it's quick and easy to take the instrument out and put it back in the lathe.

Where would I get the socket cutter for this setup?

I don't know if you can buy anything like that. The cutter, the guide and the reamer I made myself to fit this particular oboe. I have been able to use the cutter and reamer on other oboes, but had to make the guide to fit each instrument.
