I don't think mei is weak it's just her abilities aren't necessarily suited for the most destruction other than her water style witch obviously can be destructive. Also, on the fight against Madera she couldn't go all out on attack since he could absorbed Chakra which means she played more of a distraction and support role. Not to mention she seemingly had the power to extinguish the fire that they were all surrounded by if not for the poison spreading in the air. Also, yes if you didn't know they wouldn't have been nearly killed there if not for the poison flowers luckily onoki came in clutch.
I know the age difference but i wish mei and chojuro got together. She was a tall glass of wine looking for a great man. He was always 1000% down for her and she always lifted him up
