This is the type of vehicle we buy not for the crazy tech but for the comfort, off road ability and absurd reliability it provides
I own a 2012 luxury and I’m going to trade it for the 2040 model so I have 19 years left
You're presuming you'll still be alive in 2040?
@@ivanlowjones 👍 yup😀
@@franklynvilla2614
How can you guarantee you will still be alive in 20 years?
but no more body on chassis :(
So you are using a outdated car for 8 years
For being an "outdated dinosaur" it is funny how many of these you see on the road. Its a solid truck.
I will take a dinosaur over a flash in the pan any day.
Classic Toyota.
Does absolutely nothing awesome except for be dependable.
Super dependable for sure
@@DrivenHard QDR is the most underrated attribute in the wonderful world of CZcams.
my nissans rear control arm just broke about 2 days ago, when you are stranded in the woods with a broken car you come to appreciate the value of dependability and reliability
Top of food chain luxury four wheeling SUV. Will last a lifetime.

Love my 2014 GX 460. Most comfortable, quiet road-tripping machine, that also effortlessly takes my friends and I to any trailhead in Western WA, rain or snow. I found if I set cruise control to 65mph, I get around 23-24 MPG, so it's not too terribly inefficient. Consider the fuel economy on this tank the reliability tax.
Also I dig your reviews! Live in Seattle myself, and it's genuinely awesome to see a car review channel that covers the conditions we'd experience around the Cascades.
A lot of people love their car but how many cars love you back like a GX?
Had an RX and now with ES. I'm heading for a clean used 2014 GX460 Luxury trim, where would be the best place to shop? Any ideas
@@seekfactsnotfiction9056 Please note in your search for a 2014 GX that it may well be cheaper than 2014 4Runners with the same mileage.
@@seekfactsnotfiction9056 that's exactly what I got! Use Carguru's to search, as that's what's most commonly used nowadays, but don't bother with their communication tools; just reach out directly to seller. I'd limit your search to anywhere west of the Pacific coast mountains (Cascades, Sierra Nevada's, etc...) plus the desert SW, as most other places salt their roads in the winter, which will rust these frames. Hope this is what you're looking for. Oh yeah, and be sure to act fast on whatever GX you settle on, as these sell very quickly. I had multiple people try to purchase mine while I was setting up financing.
@@cameronjamieson5619 Thanks, even though I am in TX, I'll search on it with the tips you suggested in mind.
People always say that the Lexus gx and lx series are 'too old school' and a 'dinosaur', but just because it's old school doesn't mean it's a bad thing, in fact, that means there's less stuff to break
I have a 2022…. Night and day from the 21, oh, it’s a Lexus. Also, this 4.6 will last forever.
I just picked one up a few weeks ago and I must say I absolutely love it. The thing is an absolute tank and I plan on keeping it for a very long time. And this is me coming from a Land Rover Discovery.
Yeah this isnt going to light the tech side of your brain on fire, but I feel it is a solid choice for a person or family who wants their vehicle to last 20 years without any major issues.
Well summarized. I bought the 4Runner knowing it will last me a decade or two easily. That's when these vehicles are true appreciated.
True...

Exactly thats what most of these car "reviewers" dont get
I agree, even the air suspension system on the luxury model is bomb proof....LOL
We have had 2 of them, just got a 2020 and we love it. Bulletproof and so comfortable.
“When you compare this to what the competition offers...” 99% of people buying this don’t care about the features in a BMW or Mercedes. 😅
You won’t even use the features in new cars anyways.. you get in and drive to work most of the time. Phone connects and music plays. That’s all you need 90% of the time.
Exactly ,just ordered 2021.. and it’s not the interior you look it’s performance and durability you look at
Exactly. Just bought a 2021 for reasons beyond interior and the bells and whistles
Fr.. we have a Mercedes 300 awd suv.. and although we have taken it out to some offloading trails ...we never went in too far...it did ok..but isn't something that seems natural to that environment or those conditions lol..
It's features and technology is definitely made for city or normal street conditions.. but all weather ofc..
I'd take a Gx460.
I totally agree with you but at the same time I think it is just lazy work by Lexus because not even able to connect your phone is just not good. My point is this SUV had so much potential to be better but they never took that route.
Your videos are extremely well done, and it appears you are a 1-man crew which makes your content all the more impressive!
The level of confidence when u making that turn around is unbelievable 👍🏼 Been in similar situation before scread af
I personally like the item you labeled as "throw back." I also appreciate that the cruise control doesn't steer me back for me. As a driver, its your job to pay attention...so do it. While some things are great upgrade and really cool, i like keeping things simple, has a purpose but keeps the driver responsible for actually driving.
This was a great review, thank you. I personally do not care about all the kind of out dated tech features, I think this is a proper car and lets not forget the reliability factor of Toyota/Lexus.
I test drove a gx460 today , fell in love after 10 min ❤
What a great review of this great suv! My favorite part was the off road. Liked and subscribed 👍
I didn't expect that 0-60 time I expected longer, impressive!
also keep in mind the wet road condition, normal dry road is like 6.6 sec
This video just reinforces why I want this vehicle. Thank you for a stellar and honest review! I can't wait to drive this thing in Hawaii!!!
Coming from a new owner of a 2014 I can tell you that you will not regret it. And honestly just go for the base model. You don't need CRAWL/ MTS or even the air ride in the rear. 3" lift with 33's and sleek bumpers, you'll concur the world.
Best review about this car I have seen so far, great job 👏👍
Interesting and creative content on this channel. Unlike most automotive review channels. I subscribed instantly....
Just picked up a 22’ Premium with the same color combo and I’m absolutely in love with it. The new infotainment is SO MUCH better than the 21’ and older. It is pretty lame that the off-road package is only available in the luxury trim. The extra 10k over the premium really isn’t work it in my opinion.
Completely agree. Just got a 22' Premium as well with the Sport-Design pkg. Love the new screen in it. I'm keeping this thing forever!
Excellent review, appreciate the effort that has gone into producing this video!
You guys are very brave to keep pressing into the snow
Thanks for the useful review. Very useful comments from owners, too. A point worth noting regards dimensions. The vehicle is more compact than the new breed of "wide-bodies" that won't fit into an older garage. This is one of the few vehicles of its type that is about the same size as my 2007 Ford Explorer V-8. The upgraded infotainment of the 2022 model is significant. I wish they had finally changed the tailgate to a split-type/top-hinged style. It looks like a great choice for those wanting an SUV without the tech-laden models that now predominate, a vehicle to keep for years.
It's old school but that is why it still sell's so well
Love the honest assessment of the third row
Lexus is the best will never leave you stranded unlike other euro brands .
Great suv and nice video. Love this car and waiting for the redesign model. Thank you.
Your videos are extremely well done
We had snow like that in Massachusetts last week. It’s almost like sand in weight and texture, with the added benefit of being very slippery and quick to freeze under spinning wheels.
Recently I had a chance to test my Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ tires in the snow on RAV4 Hybrid, and I got to say they are really good.
Best GX460 review! This what we wanna see. Thanks
Thank you! I love this pretty Lexus GX 460
I love the red leather. I work at a Toyota factory in Kentucky and we do the Lexus ES350 and it has that same red. Love that color
Imagine if Lexus used the 4 corner hydraulic suspension and 5.7L motor from the LX in this, add in the locking rear diff and the LX feature that can drag the inside rear tire on turn and this would be perfect. Deleting the third row and adding a panoramic sunroof would be the icing on the cake.
You tried to get the back to come out during a rain on dirt road. You a wild boy.
Great review
i hope u do thw same with the nissan patrol 2020 and toyota lancroser 2020 with 5.7liter engin
Fascinating driving
Love my GX. It is an "Oldie but goodie" but, never tires!!! And that's why They are awesome BoF vehicles!!! Good Job Maneuvering it Ryan.. Always love your content.
Looking forward to what your end of year Review vehicles will be, as well as reviews for the 2021 M.Y.
We have a 2017. It’s absolutely amazing. We live in Boulder and it handles anything and everything. One of the MOST reliable vehicles you can buy. About the infotainment system, not a big deal at all. The majority of people use their phones for navigation. It has Bluetooth. It’s a non issue. I can turn on and access all controls with buttons in seconds rather than having to dive into multiple menus on a tablet like touchscreen. The GX goes places “crossovers” only dream of and pretend they can. Crossovers are essentially mini vans without sliding doors. Lame. 20 mph from Boulder to the Springs, recently. Those who know, know.
I have the very same suv. Love every bit of it!
did you say since it doesn't have Uni-body, it can have enough room in the back with the 3rd row seats?
Just picked up ‘22 premium. Love the car and agree with other comments it’s not about the tech, but I was surprised to see usb A ports galore.
A traditional old-school system that works really well for people who lives in rural areas.
Welp, *"It just works!"*
Hi, I admire your style in presentation and the way that you choose to demonstrate the car facts and how to show the powertrain every car has, I think if you put the numbers on the screen when you talking about power or torque or anything else.....Best greetings
Nice review!
Dude I'm so glad lexus still makes real suvs. I've thought about investing in a 20220 GX460 i really believe their worth money since they don't break down
I,ve had at least 12 different vehicles in my lifetime from domestic, Euro, and Asian vehicles and my GX is the most quality you can buy currently hands down. Fuel economy is the only downside but for a 5000 lb tank it is not really that bad. I average about 19-20 on the hwy. My 2017 GX has had the front grill swapped out for the newer 2020 style F sport.
Please review the newest Lexus LC500. Looks like you did a review on the 2018, I’m not really sure what had changed between 2018-2021 interior wise. It is in a different price range and market/audience of course, but I think you will find its Lexus interior and infotainment much less disappointing than the GX460. Keep up the quality content. 👍
Love this review. I looked at the GX before I got the 4Runner Limited for my wife. Just thought we don't need to spend that extra money as we use the 4Runner TRD ORP for all our trips. Without a doubt GX is best for road trips and that million mile v8 is well worth the money. Yes it does not have the latest tech to-date but I prefer these kind of reliability over tech.
So this has comfort mode right so when you buy one trim level down how would that drive compared to this trim level when it is set to comfort mode?
It looks nice and I'm totally agreed with you about the technology offer in the Lexus... When are they going to upgrade???
Love this suv and this video
Ugh, I’d love to cohost with you. Your job looks so fun! 😍
Maybe I didn’t notice, but why won’t you use central and rear differential lock to have power evenly distributed on all wheels to make climbing more effective?
Very good driving for a stock one with the wrong tires! On the east coast we have the same issues and I personally with the same car.
Yea. Most people and off road enthusiasts modify lots of these. I live in Long Island New York and they’re actually pretty common. I’ve seen them in person and CZcams.
2020 4R Pro here. I know you have an OR, and after driving the few new GX’s, which is more comfortable? I love my 4R, but want a heated steering wheel and cooled seats. Hence why I’m looking into a GX before the redesign. Thanks!
I would love to see a snow test on RX350 AWD. I couldn't decided which I wanted to buy since both RX350 and LX460 are the price.
I like to know the comfort level and AWD comparason.
We purchased a 2017 Luxury recently, and aside from Lexus quality and it actually being an "old school" body on frame SUV, the third row was a huge consideration. While it's true you have zero space for cargo with the 3rd row up, I didn't quite agree with the assessment that the third row isn't meant for humans. I'm 6' 220lbs and can sit comfortably in the 3rd row. It was the only SUV we looked at (aside from the full size Suburban/Tahoe/Expedition) that this was possible.
I'd say if the third row is important, the GX is a great option.
Always wanted to know where you go with the vehicles doing the offer testing
LOVE THE GX460!!! Absolute beast!! Drove a 2013 (non predator grill but same engine) and LOVED IT!! Low 20k’s with 97k miles and will last a lifetime. The one thing that’s unsettling tho is the need to use premium gas (with rising gas prices) and already pretty low mpg. If you can afford it..DO IT!!
I don’t think you mentioned the locking center diff button at all. Was it used??
As I was gonna say the forest is look like Washington, He said the Pacific Northwest very cool to drive in the rain & snow that is why I have one of this truck.
Anyone know if the non-luxury off road package is still any good? This review was great but curious how the non top of the line is…
Maybe I missed it, but did you ever lock the center differential while you were attempting the snowy hill climb?
Bought at 2017 base model. I’ve owned 4x4’s the last few cars (Tahoe z71 and Silverado w/ 6.0) and the GX460 is by far the better vehicle.
I have a Prado Kakadu in Australia, with the diesel it makes for an efficient daily drive as well a tackle anything machine. In Canada you would Rewquire winter tires and this thing would be more capable than a 4Runner limited, unstoppable in snow and ice.
Small diesels are so tough in the US (EPA screws them). Most of our diesel sales are in the 6.6 to 6.7L range and come in trucks with a gvwr over 8,500 lbs. I recently sold my 6.7L Cummins Ram 2500 and am waiting for a factory order on a 6.7L Powerstroke F450.
Great freaking video. I wish they had a v6 turbo version of this truck.
what's the point of only having suspension that raises in the back?
When I got my 2019 GX, I knew I wasn’t getting the latest tech, but even better is how solid and reliable the vehicle is. The reviewer complaining about the plastics and surprise lack of Apple CarPlay is laughable.
These are sold as 2.8 liter diesel Toyota Prados here in Europe with around 25 mpg. Used with ~75k miles on the clock you can pick them up for $30,000.
Small diesels are at a major disadvantage here in North America. The EPA regulations on vehicles up to 8,500 lbs gvwr make it hard for them to compete with gas engines. Above 8,500 lbs diesels become more feasible. Unfortunately only 3 companies compete in this space, but each does have a very good diesel offering right around 400 cubic inches (6.6 to 6.7L).
We paid $56k for a new 2021 Lexus GX two years ago. You can get a used one with 50k miles for around $30k. Increase to $35k and you can get one with 20,000 miles.
Please test the 2021 4runner SR5 trail next.
Please do a off road and snow test review of the new Acura MDX.
The GX has crawl control (the MTS same as Crawl ?)
Im planning on buying one this year but will swap out for a good all terrain tire. My wildpeaks are quiet and would be well suited on this dinosaur.
I wish they made the Wildpeaks for the 19" wheel that comes in the sport package. Considering the Toyo A/T3 (255/60R19).
Still More Off Road worthy than MOST so called SUV,s today.
18:00 some proper snow tires and about an inch more ground clearance ad you would have had a much easier time on that part of the trail.
czcams.com/video/RPkvTqiPnG0/video.html
BTW KDSS isn't related to the adjustable suspension. KDSS is the hydraulic adjustable sway bar, which disconnects below 15mph for ride and articulation and is stiffer on road at higher speeds. Same system on the 4runner Off road and is comparably stiffer above 15mph and looser below. Also I don't think you engaged the center diff lock. Also MTS in Rock mode is the most aggressive for off road.
i bought a new one and i love driving it. i dont care anything about the infotainment system. i would rather it doesnt have any infotainment system, all mechanics is the best. because it can last four times as much as other luxurious cars.
Why did you not talk about the center diff?
@ Driving Sports TV Not sure if you still have your 4Runner, but do you think it would be worth it to upgrade to the 2022 GX460?
We sold the 4Runner to buy a Ranger. But if I was to buy one again, I'd probably get the GX.
@@drivingsports Ok, thanks!
What trail is that?
If we want use it to tow 4.5k lb rv, what trim you suggest gx460?
All trims can tow 6500lbs, same powertrain.
I'll wait for the next version
Yea right.
In all of your GX videos I’ve been saying out loud at my phone “LOCK THE CENTER DIFF” when you keep getting stuck
ditto ...!!!!!!! this dude just don't get it !!!!!
Does it not have crawl control like a Tacoma? You used something as hill descent and said it works up hill or down. Wondering if it would've kept chewing up that snowy corner if it has that.
That was crawl control. Could have used it on the snowy corner, but had second thoughts on that one pretty quickly due to the drop-off and the poor performance from the tires. Figured it would have just got me stuck and we would have then ended up missing the lake.
🤷♂️. I'd keep mine over any new SUV on the market today. It just works.
Too much emphasis is put on TECH now a days. Then we wonder why the reliability of certain brands that were previously TOP NOTCH has started to dwindle down. Those who buy this Lexus GX460 usually do so for refinement AND possible off road capability. If you want something that lasts you 20-25 years with amazing customer service, look no further. If you want tech that can cause you head ache, you have a plethora of options. Stop being so "picky".
I love my 2015 GX460, it takes me everywhere my 4Runner did, just a bit faster!
Good luck 👍
Why is the transmission making that gnarly sound? Always wonder why my car only makes that sound in low gear
I love the video
Prius will drive just fine through that test offroad.
Classic rather than outdated.. kind of how Ford is with the mustang.. for many years....many many years..into the 2000s.. they only made body changes for the most part...overall the mechanical side of it was mostly how it had been originally.. they believed.. if it wasn't broke or worked then why change it...
It's what you get when you've done something sooo well.. and have such a solid platform..
I want a gx460.. or even a slightly used gx470.. except I'd probably throw some extra cash into it and get some extra after market offroad goodies put into it.. (2 to 3 inch lift.. better even more rugged yet versatile tires.. roof top tent or something.. front and rear bumpers made for offloading.. wench.. more lights..)
Good review. That random dubstep was weird tho during the snow drive.
Love my 470
anyone knows if that bumper can be replaced with an aftermarket one?
They can. Just look at some Overlanding mods that are on CZcams
Why don't you lock the center diff in the tough stuff? you just destroyed the Torsen center diff . That was actually hard to watch.
I wanna see you take an old Touareg down one of these roads.
I really wish they trimmed up the bodywork and made it look more like the Prado
