    I've found it, in the depths of CZcams, a Tuba concerto, a Tuba masterpiece, not a 10 year old playing long tones.

    I must say, one of my favorite parts of this piece is right at the 3:43 mark, where you can't really tell where the soloist ends and the other tubist takes over. Real listening right there.

    Lots of slow practice. My own journey with this piece was I learned the piece years ago (high school). For this performance I revisited my original musical ideas, but ultimately created many new musical ideas that can be heard throughout the concerto. First and foremost learn the ins-and-outs of the work (stick to the details on the page) and then start coming up with your own ideas. Recordings are a great starting point for musical discovery. Good luck!

      @@jakobbrown4016 practice long tones, a lot, play with your air on the low notes you can get and don't press your face against the mouthpiece. if you just blow air into the tuba without your lips barely touching the mouthpiece you'll get it!

      I don't expect to be able to do this in a while. I'm only 2 years on my tuba, and although I got to Waltz for Mippy III and am trying to do Shostakovich Polka, I'm still stuck on a stupid Yamaha tuba that can only hit a low e! No compensating valves either! I also have no tuba teacher, so its a struggle. Would any of you guys suggest any tuba practise books to develop a proper practice routine?

    Tuba players, according to the stereotype often seem quite wide or broad in the chest. I suppose it's a sign of having a large breath capacity. Does anybody know? Trombone players also often seem to be of a type, tall but not very flashy, while trumpet players often tend to be shorter and have more of an intense look. What do you think?

      @mason11198 Před 5 lety

      Yeah, It seems to be bigger boys who play with the occasional girl or small guy . I really don't know why, but brass seems to be predominantly male, with bigger men on the bigger chunks of brass. I guess it is because of this trend that people of that stature are attracted to such an instrument.

    • @noahfeinstein9395
      @noahfeinstein9395 Před 5 lety

      Well I can agree that Tuba players are usually bigger guys playing the instrument. For me, I am tall (6'2") but I am actually skinny, so I fall partially under it. The instrument take a lot of air so I guess it makes sense for bigger guys needed to play the instrument. Anyone can, but it just takes a lot of time and practice for anyone to fully grasp the Tuba in their own way.

      it's not the tuba, often times it's your embrasure. when looking for a full tone widen the mouth and don't press your face into the mouth piece. before blowing into the tuba practice by simply blowing raspberry with all your air, do this a few times, then take a deep breath and recreate what you did away from the instrument. repeat this and your tone should be getting better and better!

    In regards to buying a tuba before college is all around a bad idea. First you need to develop a good and articulation and simply know what to look for in a tuba (is there any resistance when blowing air? or is it free flowing). And most importantly bring another trained tubist with you to decide that you sound best on that horn.
