  • Learn how to make Panaka, a festive sweet drink recipe for Ram Navami by Anushruti.
On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, Anushruti brings you the recipe of Panaka which many people offer to Lord Rama on this day. Panaka, also known as Panakam in Telugu is a festive sweet drink and a summer cooler.
    Ingredients: (Serves 4)
    1 litre (4 cups water)
2 tbsp lime juice or juice extracted from 2 small limes
    4 green cardamom
    12 strands of saffron
    A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
2 tsp ginger juice (extracted from freshly grated ginger)
    10 tbsp jaggery
    Method:
    - Assemble the water in a large bowl.
    - Place the cardamom and saffron in a mortar and pestle and crush to a fine power.
    - Mix in the lime juice, cardamom, saffron, optional nutmeg, ginger juice and jaggery powder and stir until well mixed and no lumps remain.
    - Chill well and serve cold or at room temperature.
NOTE: Use this recipe as a guide. You can increase or decrease the quantity of lime juice depending on the desired levels of tanginess. The jaggery can also be increased or decreased depending on how sweet you want your drink to be. Likewise increase or tone down the spices. My grandmother says either use cardamom or nutmeg as both can overpower the drink.

Your panaka making is rich... but it is not original one!!! To attract foreigners it may be good!!!
    1. Saffron is not needed
    2. Dried ginger is used
    3. Palm jaggery is used
