Whilst the overweight customer is a paying customer, so is the one who had to stand. No one should have their seat taken because someone else doesn't fit in their seat. That's just absurd. If he paid for that seat, he paid for that seat. He's not the one who doesn't fit.

I was an obese person and avoided airplanes. Once needing to fly, I wanted to avoid the embarrassment for myself and other passengers, so I purchased two seats. Well when I boarded my two seats were joined by an arm rest that could not be raised! I quietly told the stewardess of the problem . She made a big deal of it, said there was nothing she could do and ask me to take my seat. All at the top of her voice! I am normally a passive person and would have just tried to sit down. But instead I stood my ground and at the top of my voice I yelled back at her! “I paid for two seats so that the people around me could be comfortable” A few moments later, A man from first class came back and asked what was wrong. He was told. Then he leaned to the man in the seat on the other side of me ( where the arms moved) said something, and that man got up and moved to fist class, I was able to lift the arm rest and sit in his seat. The first class man sat beside me where the armrest did not move. He then apologized , told me he was an off duty pilot and we got first class service all the way. I have since lost 150 lbs and no long have to buy two seats.

I use to be morbidly obese and flew. I realized that I was filling up more space than I should. I apologized to the person next to me and bought him drinks. Afterwards I decided that until I lost weight I was going to have to purchase 2 seats. It’s just not fair to other passengers. Thankfully I lost 200 lbs and I’m half my previous size and I fit nicely in one seat. Perhaps an alternative plan for the airlines is to have 1 or 2 “bariatric” seats per flight and charge a bit more for those

Congratulations on your weight loss! It must have been such a great feeling that the first time you took a flight and fit comfortably. I understand the feeling as I lost 160 lbs myself. Gained a bit back after a car accident, but I am now ~20 pounds away from my goal weight again :) I remember not even being comfortable behind the wheel in my car and having to push the seat back despite having short legs. I couldn't fit the old-fashioned desks in university classes or put the desk down in the old lecture hall row seating as I carried all my weight abdominally. I felt horrible everywhere and always stood out. Luckily, I never took up more than a seat and never had trouble using the seatbelts while flying, but I am sure I would have gotten there had I continued down the road I was on. So glad I am far away from that nightmare, and I'm so happy that you are as well. Sounds like both of us understood the detrimental effects of our size-- I am grateful that I didn't convince myself I was healthy and cringe at the thought of how I would be today if I had deluded myself.

I'm an obese person who always buys two seats or flies first class. The thing that drives me CRAZY is how hard the airlines make it to do so! None of the online ordering sites have an option to buy two seats for a single person... you just have to order two seats and then put the same name for the second seat or "My Name Seat #2" or something... and every. single. time. I've done this, even times that I've called to talk to a human being to make sure I did it right, everyone involved at the airline was totally confused about why my name was on two seats or why I had two tickets but only one person showed up. One particular time that still rankles me to think about it: I was doing a manual check-in. I made it clear that I had two seats because I was clearly fat and needed extra space... and yet when I got to my seat, they had not properly logged my extra seat, so there was already someone sitting in the middle seat when I arrived. I got it resolved, but the whole point of paying extra is so that I don't have to face those "OMG, no!" looks I got that day, and it seems like the system refuses to give me a way to do that with any security that I won't pay the extra money and still have a humiliating, terrible experience.

Instead of promoting anorexia where they are not eating or just throwing it up to alot of girls forcing themselves to eat more and more past what they CAN physically eat because curvy is attractive. Skinny shaming is also a thing, but we have double standards it's like how people view rape with a women is more serious than with a man despite both being rape. It's the same thing. Here's what you do.... you have a gate that the customer has to pass through to get to the ticket desk. The gate is exactly as wide as a seat with it's armrests down. If the customer cannot pass through the gate, they have to go around and pay for 2 seats.
No fuss, no muss. No call-outs about being judgemental. It's as blatant, and arbitrary, as stating a maximum weight allowance for an elevator. You don't argue with the elevator. If you overload it, bad things happen.

Try reading the service contract that the airlines have and you'll see that they don't even guarantee that they will take you to your destination.
At best, you're paying to get yourself and your baggage to a destination, not how comfortable you might be in the process. Because of fuel costs and such, the profit margin for airlines can be rather minimal. They probably have a formula for calculating how much delayed luggage is worth to you, how much half a seat is worth, etc. The fact is, flying *cargo* could probably be more comfortable. I was going to say that they pack us in like sardines in a can, but that's not accurate since at least sardines get to lay out straight and not in contortions. :)

This is the airline designating seats smaller so more people can be packed in like cattle and then they raise the price of flights. Its basically fitting all of you into a metal folding chair and about as comfortable for hours and expecting no part of you to go across that edge line. The solution when an airline over books a flight by giving a morbidly obese passenger a row seat is to give that obese passenger the flight attendant's seat where thy can spill out over the sides of the seat without effecting anyone and seat the flight attendant in the row seat on the aisle.
Forcing a paying passenger to stand for a seven hour flight is absolutely absurd

I have addressed this before take off. I told the flight attendant, "I can't put the arm rest down. The arm rest must be down." They moved me to another seat. This has to be handled BEFORE take off. Moving me may have forced them to reschedule another passenger. They did not ask the obese man to get off the flight so, I assume they had enough seats. Nevertheless, we all know the rules. Makes sure they enforce them before it's too late.

      @gunner678 Před 7 lety +8

Jp.Girl i dont think that its always the case that to be obese is a choice, but that is not really the point. I think its more about whats real and equitable. If two people visiting NYC want to buy a ticket to fly home, then the cost is not necessarily going to be the same, if one lives in washington DC and the other in paris. The circumstances are different. on the other hand if both passengers were flying from NYC to DC, but one has no luggage, whilst the other has 6 suit cases and a trunk, the cost will be vastly different. Its not logical as was mentioned on the report to say that its disciminatory, sometimes the factors involved prevent equal treatment to what appears to be a similar requirement. In europe, space/capacity requirement is the primary factor, therefore additional seats have to be purchased otherwise the plane does not fly! In the same token, a young baby eventhough the child is a human being requires very little space and takes up little capacity, but that baby is still recorded on the manifest.....long winded comment but I think it demonstrates logic and equitability over possible charges of discrinimation. Cheers!

My sister-in-law is the same height as me but more than double my weight. I eat like a sewer rat, zero regard to my poor stomach has to digest, while she is perpetually dieting and only eats healthy, unprocessed foods. She also works out far more than me.
Of course it's not always the case, but you would be surprised for how many people this is a frustrating medical reality rather than an uncontrollable appetite.

If you cannot sit in your seat safely and only your seat- you should be removed from the flight due to primarily it being a safety risk and for the comfort of all passengers

steve b You do realise it's also a safety violation to have passengers standing upon take off and landing?
Nonetheless, the guy paid for a seat. One whole seat. He should have received one whole seat. He didn't get the services he paid for. He deserves, and under Australian Consumer Law, is entitled to a full refund. I'm sure America would have a similar consumer law too, but I'm just going on my local knowledge.

if i was that guy, i'd have purposefully fell upon landing. right when you get the jolt of the back tires hitting the ground, make sure you tense your body up as much as possible and don't hold on to anything. fall backwards and complain of head and back injuries and request paramedics so that they can take you to the hospital. you'll have injury attorneys chomping at the bits trying to get you to hire them, because this is an easy fucking big payout.

I am a small woman about 115 lbs a huge man sat on me for a flight from TX to Oregon. I asked for help repeatedly during the flight. By the end of the flight I could not stand up. The fat guy had a wheel chair to haul him out and they had to get one for me becuase I could not stand or walk. When I contacted American airlines they completely ignored me. When it happened the next time on united, i insisted the flight attendant trade places with me. She threaten to have me held by the cops on arrival I told thats better than spending two weeks daily at the chiropractor trying to recover the use of my left side. She was speechless. I dont have an answer for this issue but as I get older and more frail physically I just cant risk being chrushed by an obese person.

Yes, it is actually a very serious FAA violation and the airline as well as the pilots would face very serious fines, the pilots would face revocation of their licenses, and there could even be criminal charges.
