    What I have found is that graff is done for different reasons in different areas. That's why the film takes place in LA and Denver to show some of the differences. While gangs have certainly had their influence on graffiti, there is a growing number of writers who have been or are just getting into the scene because of the art. This film isn't about defining graffiti, it's about telling a couple of stories by artists from different generations, locations and walks of life.

      I'm sorry you took it that way Duke, I just said that gangs have had an influence. The guys I worked with who were in LA had all had gang related experiences, who then left and just became graff artists, while the guys in Denver had started out as graff artists and never became involved with gangs. As I said, this film is all about telling a few stories and NOT defining graffiti as a whole, I just commented on what I learned, which could be and likely is different from what you have learned, therefore before you act like a toy and shoot your mouth off, try and have a discussion where you state your position and not come off as an ass.

      Joe Garrett LA is definitely gang infested compared to Denver and has been that way for decades.
      And even LA gangs have their form of urban culture that is mimicked worldwide!
      And what many LA graffiti writers did is adapt it to their art.

    Hey Joe, I had been thinking about doing a short film regarding graffiti, and I could not really find any directional samples; any insight you can provide on how you got started in finding the people/ locations/ things to be aware of?
    Also, really like the documentary. Solid Job.

    • @anthrovoxakajosefgarrett3028
      @anthrovoxakajosefgarrett3028  Před 7 lety +4

      Hey Stephen, Thanks for liking! Most of the guys that I approached were pretty skeptical about being interviewed for a film. I would suggest going to a "free wall" where artists are generally allowed to paint without being chased down by the police. I had luck at Venice Beach and then I also called and visited places that deal with graffiti writers, galleries and tours. The guys that I talked to on the street weren't all that interested, or they just didn't trust me which is how I would feel if a random guy came up and asked to interview you. My suggestion would be to keep looking, and all you need to do is find one guy and that will open the door for others. It might also be good to ask any of your friends if they know anyone, or check out a local college and hit up the art dept, you might be able to find someone there. I think you'll find as I did that there are some great stories to be told and some people are eager to tell them!
      Good Luck and if you have any more questions, just ask!

An there's this crew here "DOSK" an there up everywhere not that much as "back then" , but them an k2d were the only biggest crews here. Some names too were like "CSE, BAK, KID, BA (BABY A), COSP, FUTS, JAY, OKAE, VILLEN" . Too many gang graffiti here though, so you gotta watch out gangs that's what sucks but fuck it I've been doing it since 05 it's a habit.

    Black books were the Bible back in the day. If you’re not bombing getting ups than you’re not a true graff writer. I’m glad I grew up around the Bronx in the 70’s-80’s. I later moved out to Cali and saw a completely different wild style of graff. The culture has changed so much. It’s excepted these days. It’s sucks you can’t get good OG Krylon or Rusto anymore but there are so many new paint options these days.
