- This is the finale to Act 3 of Cilea's ADRIANA LECOUVREUR featuring Joan Sutherland in the title role and Heather Begg as the Princess. Captured 'live' in performance at the Sydney Opera House - February 29th 1984.
In a few interviews, Sutherland said how much she enjoyed this role. And she also said was just as happy "to leave all that agility behind," referring to her famous bel canto roles. Nonetheless, she continued to sing Lucia, Lucrezia, and Elvira for a few more years after this performance!

This is one of my favourite Operas. There’s so much icy drama, the costumes are usually a feast for the eyes, the Princesse de Bouillon has beautiful romantic arias as well as Adriana, and the music is stunning when sung well. And with a cast like Sutherland Heather Begg watching this recording never disappoints.
If I had one complaint it would be that the video is such low quality. How they went from the clear film quality of the ‘50s and ‘60s to the grainy & out of focus blur of the ‘70s and ‘80s being “acceptable” en masse will always be bizarre to me. Regardless certainly one of, if not the, best Adriana productions of the last 40 years.

Sutherland's declamatory speech here is exemplary with the words delivered with just the slight exaggeration needed to stress Adriana's position within the drama.

No niego que a la Sutherland la escucho a menudo, pero aquí es insoportable, su dicción ya cantando en italiano era fatal, recitando ni se diga y el verismo no era para su carácter. Ella en la ópera francesa y ciertos papeles del bel canto. Pero Adriana no.
Es asombroso escuchar a Sutherland usar el idioma italiano de manera tan efectiva y con un impacto tan dramático. Este es un papel que se adapta perfectamente a ella.
