Both singers are excellent here. Among many Australian Opera performances I attended in the 70s, I regret never hearing Janice Taylor at all, nor Robert Allman in this role, though I did see him excel in many other parts. Verdi is rather clunky here. That orchestral accompaniment in the final section is pretty unsophisticated stuff I think, but still quite thrilling!

Thank you so much for putting this on CZcams. I was in the audience and it was a very exciting event. Samuel Dundas in the title role was amazing, and so were nearly all of the other principals. When Richard Mills is ready a final version of this exhilarating work deserves a second and third and many more outings than it got first time round.

Dear Brian - thanks for posting this excerpt from the Sofia Lohengrin - a throughly enjoyable experience, glorious colleagues on and off stage. Other than the ensemble problem in 'Mein lieber Schwan!' (I came in a bar early on the G major syncopation, alas, it took me some bars to get back in, oh well, that is live opera!) rather happy with singing the great Knight of the Grail once again.

    * Line Voice * Harold Blair wasn't the first Aboriginal to release a record - Sydney duo Olive & Eva claimed that distinction in 1955 with 'Old Rugged Hill's/Rhythm of the Corrobee' - but he was Australia's first black music star, an operatic tenor whose fame rivalled even Albert Namatjira's. Born in Cherbourg in south-central Queensland in 1925, Blair travelled to New York after the Second World War to further his studies. But even though Australia's 'high culture' vultures sniffed at his voice, Blair went on to become a sort of Australian Paul Robeson during the folk boom - a black concert hall singer who recorded folkloric and spiritual material and was a stalwart of the civil right's moment. In 1956, Melbourne independent label Score Record's released what it trumpeted as 'the first original recording of Aboriginal song's' - Blair's recorded debut, singing material such as 'Jabbin, Jabbin' (from Lethbridge's famous Australian Aboriginal Song's, published by Allan & Co. in 1937). He followed this in the early 69s with a 3-track single for Crest Record's featuring choral gospel standards such as 'How Great Thou Art' and 'I'll Walk with God'. Around the same time he played the title role in a stage revival of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Blair also composed a signature song, 'O Land of Mine's, which he dedicated to the time "when my people shall be 🆓", but it went unreleased. 🕊️ He died in Melbourne in 1976, aged 51
