I put together an edited compilation of my management for the 2019 Spring season. This season was very challenging which involved employing all my spring time management strategies. From the "Land Down Under" . . . Australia , as we move into our winter. More power to you Ian. Thanks for sharing the passion, you have refocused my processes of management. I love my bees as a 6 hive hobby and I'm inspired to grow further, despite my 81 years. Love to get a job with you.
I studied agriculture for 3 years 1957-59, and am still in contact with our apiculture lecturer at that time . . . he is still breeding queens.
I have been watching this 2 hr video in segments. This is a brilliant epic romance story, a hard bound version of a story of Honey Bee hive management. Well done Ian. Love it!

Thanks a heap for the tip on assessing brood strength in spring by cracking up the hive and inspecting the bottom of the brood frames. I can now do my spring maintenance much more effectively and much quicker. I'm a hobbyist so only have a little time at weekends. It's a great technique - no need to dig down from the top. Many thanks for sharing, Dean (Western Australia).
Learned a lot from this video, bookmarked it so I can refer back to it as a reference for growing my own apiary. Only started beekeeping 4 weeks ago and I’ve already done a successful split, so I’ve terned 1 hive into 2 successful hives. Thanks Ian!
Been watching a few of your videos and I am impressed! Just thinking about having a few hives in my backyard and you work miles of hives.
I watched a lot of bee videos, all their little secrets to success. Your the same but on steroids, everything stream lines to service all the hives. A lot can be learned from folks like you.
Makes me miss my job more! I honestly cannot wait till next year to see how many have thrived through this winter, and how many splits we can get!

Great idea. Since im entering my first winter with bees and trying to learn you have shown the thought process need. I have been keeping notes (daily) recording weather conditions, whats blooming, and what im doing with my bees. New years day is time to start reviewing and accessing while noting what going on in my yard. I thought i was being anal but your prep work based on history of your bee activity and area tells me that is the way to learn. I have expanded into learning the weeds and wildflower patterns in my area and trying to build myself an identication and bloom time library for a ten mile circle of my yard.

Haven't checked the weather in your area but we are supposed to be in the pluses for the next week or more. Even saying as high as 7 degrees. Bet the girls are going to love the chance to get some flight time in. Looks like this may be our January thaw as January looks like it might be colder than normal.

just found your video. I am from New Mexico, USA. My Grandfather and my father were both beekeepers. I grew up working in the extracting house. My father was the president of the National Beekeepers for 7 years in the 60's & 70's. We wholesaled our honey. It was made from the tamarack (Salt Cedar). It has a very strong flavor and was used in large bakeries. Some times we would get some mesquite and that is wonderful table grade honey. It brought back memories. thanks for the video.

Maybe someone has already suggested this? You need a nuptial alley. A man made, ideal mating area that is protected from most weather. There are some ingredients, a stream, a row of trees and shrubs blocking prevailing winds, with no other trees blocking access from the nucs. I studied under Dr. Norman Gary at UCD.
This video is fascinating! I love bees and respect insects in general. Why is the first impulse of many humans to 'see a bug, kill a bug?'......
Never realised that beekeeping was so 'industrialised', but of course it makes sense if we're talking honey by the ton. I guess the colonies are warm enough to survive Canadian winters. I attended my first beekeeping fair last May, they had hives with plexiglass walls!. Fully intended to come back this year with the kids. Sadly, that's not gonna happen, but I'm planning to adopt a hive or 2 this season, purely for the joy of communing with these beautiful, industrious creatures. Wish me luck!

Hi Ian, I’ve watched/listened to this video many times. Tonight I caught it when you said you don’t have a good way of finding frames to graft from that are the right age. Bob Binnie has a great video showing how he does it. He isolates the queen to one frame using portions of a plastic queen excluder on each side of the frame. There’s grooves in the box for the excluder to slide into. He places the breeder queen on the frame and 4 days later he has larvae that are 1 day old or less. The video on his channel is called “How We Produce Queens”, on the playlist for “Splitting Beehives”.
I certainly would never try to tell you how to do your job, but I thought I would at least give you the information and it may help, if not, no harm done.

We definitely consider this as a management trick but we have not opted for it yet,
Time spent preparing to save time sometimes adds more time, sometimes it saves time. For as little grafting we do, all that prep might cost more

I like ur vids as u get colder longer than us, and probably colder for longer periods of time. We have elevation wind and very wild swings in temps, we’ll be out checking out the bees at 60-70* temps and by the next morning itwillbe single to - temps and that has to be hard on them, 70 mi east of cheyenne wy

I just started out but I have learned one thing a four frame box you can squeeze five in and a five frame box you can squeeze six in but you take a really bad chance on rolling the queen the extra room is supposed to be for the queen box our small feeder

I'm located in eastern NC. I have two nucs that are weak. I have several enormous colony's. Would news paper,screen excluder with two nucs work in the winter months placing the nucs on top of one single 10 frame strong colony?

I inspected my hives a few days ago and found capped brood and eggs in December! It's been cold here in Kentucky but we've enjoyed a few days of warmth and the bees have been working the dry pollen sub. Amazing creatures.

This is amazing stuff but we need ya to hit the 100k sub mark. Just like your bee's you need to split your videos up. 30min each max. Your wasting a valuable resource. Its like over feeding your bee's. Just give em enough to keep moving forward. All your hard work should be split up a bit so you double -triple your views. Get one of your kids to do the editing. You have a gold mine with all the possible videos you could make in regards to your entire farming. I know its not your main focus but with a little structure change you will have a massive following. Everyone will agree with me your channel should have and deserves way more views n subs. Whatever you do decide I love watching whatever your doing out there. Peace from Vancouver Island.

Ian, back when you started posting your beekeeping v videos, you would stack the hives 2 high when loading them or, unstacking them in the yard. I'm not seeing you do that much now and was curious about the change in practice.
I still do that, sometimes one at a time is actually quicker, because the hive only gets hit once, double stacking , the one hive gets hit twice which stirs that second hive up more,
And I’m typically dressed lightly

Ian, you mention in some of your videos that you feed them until you see a "wet broodnest". Is wet broodnest a frame with larvae surrounded by open (uncapped) syrup/nectar ring with no nectar between brood cells? You specifically mentioned that when you were pail feeding and that seemed to be a point when you stop feeding, at the point when you get to the web broodnest state.

Something that I have not found here is the fork, lifting the hives, in and out of the truck. I see the ergonomic win in that particular fork. Where did you find it? I would love to have one in the future.
