Hi Susan 🦋 hope you had a great 4th and your fur-babies weathered the fireworks …ours are still gun shy so far today. Great info for necessary components for butterfly gardens. I did better this year with groupings of host plants and it didn’t take long to realize the importance of safe haven barriers around the host plants. Working on rectifying that omission but it’s so dang hot I can only do so much for now. Btw found a Giant swallowtail cat on the wild lime!😊 So grateful for recent rains. Happy weekend happy gardening 🌺

The recent rains have been wonderful, my garden is very lush and green, although there are definitely more mosquitoes now. The dragonflies are out, so hopefully the mosquitoes will vanish. I think I need some bats to move in. 😉😉. Yay for finding a Giant Swallowtail cat!! Woohoo!

@Susanthebutterflygardener Yes, I love their head movements, and apparently, they are the most successful hunters. They fly so fast. I used to be scared of them as a child, and now they are one of my favorites. Especially since one landed on my finger last year.

Our population butterfly and caterpillar populations are very low this year as well. The wasps are just decimating the poor baby cats! And last year OE ravaged us, we had so many losses. 😢 This year I have left most of them out in the open, but they really don’t stand a chance between predators and chemicals. Our HOA sprays heavily~ but sometimes remembers to leave my yard alone. I have lots of signs up to remind them, but they get into their routines and forget. The wind carries the insecticide and herbicides into my property as well. I’m hoping to save some babies IF I see any, but despite a very robust milkweed situation and plentiful nectar plants like Mex Sunflowers, Zinnias, Pentas, etc we just don’t have many butterflies around this summer.
Always good to see your videos mas and get a ok at your Inspirational Garden. Keep up the good work.

The caterpillars have a lot going against them, beyond their natural predators. Every new butterfly garden gives it a nudge in a positive direction. So we just keep going and do what we can. 🩵🦋🩵🦋🩵🦋

Another great video Susan. I had 2 monarch caterpillars last month, I think they got picked off by birds. I would have taken them in but we were going on vacation. I've seen some swallowtails....more caterpillars than butterflies, so I know they are around.

I found a few monarch caterpillar eggs this morning, so hopefully more caterpillars will be munching on the milkweed soon. I have released several Giant Swallowtails, I saw one out flying in my garden this morning. Yay!!!!

I’ve been having lots of monarch caterpillars.
No zebra long wings - which is absolutely weird because I usually have a lot because I’ve put passion vines (3 different types) in lots of places in shady spots for them, including crawling up fire bush, which is their favorite habitat. So I usually have a lot of them.
I’m getting other butterflies too. But like you, not the normal amount.
I DO have a decent number of bumble bees right now. Relatively speaking. So that’s a good thing.
I don’t have nearly the number of caterpillars you have - except monarchs.

Happily discovered I have a small colony of Hayhurst’s scallopwing skippers today. Discovered there are 4-5 l think. It’s very exciting. I also discover 2 eggs and a tiny just emerged caterpillar on lambs quarters! How exciting! This species isn’t really common and forms colonies so I might could have a permanent resident! And I saw a gulf fritillar hanging round I know it laid eggs. And I found a I believe red spotted purple caterpillar! This time I’ll take pictures to show you! It’s still tiny now but soon! The depression has lifted there’s gonna be butterflies after all!

I am feeling the same way, there was a gorgeous female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail in my garden today and I watched her lay eggs on my wild black cherry tree. I almost couldn’t believe it. And honestly, I am so grateful to be retired and able to see all of these butterflies through August and September and beyond. I’m going to go look up the Hayhurst’s scallopwing, I haven’t heard of that one and I love skippers. 🩵🦋🩵🦋🩵🦋🩵🦋

Still not seeing many butterflies here in Ocala. Last year at this time I had tons of butterflies flying around my garden. I have quite a few host plants and nectar plants but no butterflies. I hope they come soon, I miss them.😥

Hi Susan. Do you find you have to by a lot of pink swamp milkweed each year? I keep planting them, but it seems they get eaten into sticks right away and never recover or come back.

    • @Susanthebutterflygardener
      @Susanthebutterflygardener  Před 28 dny

I used to, what I have found is that if it is a first year plant, if it gets eaten down, it is likely not going your way grow back, but my second year and older plants usually grow back. Although, now I have tons of milkweed because I am still seeing a significant slow down in Monarch activity. Now, if I buy swamp milkweed at a nursery I look for older plants, or plants with visible signs of having been cut back, thicker stems with branches, etc.

  •  Před 28 dny +2

Butterflies are way down for me. Lots of reasons. Local development and land use changes with herbicides mostly. Also these dang european paper wasps eating species other wasps and birds don't touch. Hopefully the heat and drought will bode will for a population explosion later in the season.
