Butterfly Puddling Station & Releasing Butterflies | Butterfly Gardening

  • In this butterfly gardening video, I make a butterfly puddling station in my milkweed garden using an old miniature bird bath I bought at an antique store, some sand and some pretty stones. Butterflies can get the minerals they need from a puddling station, so by adding one to your butterfly garden you can give the butterflies another reason to visit. Then I have a lot of Monarch butterflies to release in my garden. You get to see how a few of them really enjoy their first visit with a cone flower. There is something so special about watching a butterfly fly for the first time. It is a beautiful thing.

    I've only seen 1 faded & tattered female monarch. She was just hanging out on the milkweed blooms, not the leaves. Usually by now I have lots of butterflies. It's scary & sad to have no monarchs. I'm glad you're still seeing them!

      Are you North of Florida? We have a year round population here, but I have heard that they are slower to reach northern locations this year.

      Not only do they help butterflies and other pollinators, they also add more visual interest to your garden. 💕🐛🦋

    Here is a recent experience I had releasing three monarch butterflies. On Saturday morning June 26, I released three monarch butterflies between 8am-10am. We are into a rainy period here in northeast Illinois so I was careful to check local weather radar to see if any storms were on the horizon. Radar was clear and the forecast was for no rain until after 1pm. It wasn't an hour after I released my last butterfly that a tornado warning was issued for my area. A popup severe thunderstorm formed out of nowhere. I bring this up because I wanted to share what I witnessed from one of the butterflies I released. The last monarch butterfly I released landed on my butterfly bush while the weather was calm. When the storm hit with pouring rain accompanied by some strong winds I saw from my kitchen window a remarkable sight. When the storm began the butterfly on my butterfly bush calmly crawled up to the very top remaining there throughout the entire storm. I watched in amazement as the butterfly held on to the top of the butterfly bush with relative ease seemingly unconcerned about the unruly weather. After the storm subsided I went outside to see if the storm had harmed the butterfly. The butterfly took one look at me and briskly flew off to my Hick's Yew hedge bordering my yard. I left the butterfly alone after that. I figured any butterfly resilient enough to ride out several inches of rain and some stiff winds did not need me bothering it anymore. Moral of the story is once a monarch butterfly is released into its element it is one tough critter.

      Such a great story…they do know what to do. We give them a bit of respite for protection from predators, but as soon as they are butterflies, we release them and they go on living their best lives and they know exactly how to do it. I am so glad we are able to give them that chance.

    I read where butterflies like cow manure because of the minerals in it -- so I put some cow manure compost in my puddler.

    Your video is really cool and the puddler you created is great. The growing and releasing of the butterflies is awesome. Question - how do you tell the difference between male and female butterflies? I'm definitely going to try and make a puddler. Thanks for your video.

      Awesome, thank you so much!!! Some butterflies is is easy to tell which are males and females and others, not so easy. There really isn’t one universal way to tell for all butterflies. Have fun creating your puddler. 💕🐛🦋💕🐛🦋

    Great video! I'm just getting started with my garden. Located in AZ. I had a question. I notice you have 2 enclosures for the different types. Is it not a good idea to put them all in one?

    • @ButterflyGardeningwithSusan
      @ButterflyGardeningwithSusan  Před rokem +1

      You can put them together, they tend to stay on their host plant until they wander off to pupate. I have a lot of enclosures because some of the caterpillars host on shrubs and trees and I grow them in big pots, so they take up a lot of space in the enclosures.

    Where can you get the eggs of the butterflies and the tent where they can hatch?

      I collect the eggs from my garden. The butterflies lay their eggs on the host plants. I have links to the enclosures in the description section under my CZcams videos. Thank you for watching💕💕🐛🦋🐛🐛

      Each type of butterfly has different ways of differentiating between male and female, and for some of them it is hard to tell

      Males have a small black spot on the surface of each hind wing (the lower wings). Females do not have the spots. ( They are spotless 😉😉) 💕🐛🦋
