      @Ultra CNC they shortened the track for the fuel cars for a couple reasons. Two drivers were killed in a very short span, and the extra 320ft is where most of the cost is for the fuel car teams. That's where they destroy most engine parts, use more fuel, most likely to blow up, etc... a lot of it was cost factorization for teams and since it was with the 2008 financial crisis, you need to keep it appealing for small budget and or new teams. Also teams have stated they do not want to return to 1/4 mile

      Back 15 years ago you could actually earn a living racing something like Comp Eliminator. $30k to win a Wednesday night race all around the country. Now the total prize pool for all the door cars is that 30k

  • @1951RKP
    @1951RKP Před 12 lety +8

    WJ and other Pro Stock racers had with NHRA was only prepping the racetrack to 1000 feet leaving the last 320 lose which greatly effected the Pro Stock cars as they run with little down force in their spoilers so when they run out of the treated 1000 foot and transition onto the untreated last 320 feet their cars get lose as the video shows. Pro Stock Chassis and engines cost wise are just as expensive if not more than the fuel cars.Only difference they don't trash a motor every run.

    @RaceMustangs Před 9 lety +17

    I am not a huge WJ fan, but I have met him and fully respect his knowledge and opinions. I can also tell by many of the comments here that many have never been down the track before. Dragstrips were never designed to handle 300mph plus cars that weigh as much as a F/C...back in the day, 250 mph not only put butts in the seats, there were also more cars for the spectator money, making it a non-stop show. As a racer, even driving a much slower car (120 mph) I can tell you first hand how fast the retaining net comes. So the rest of you who are armchair quartermile quarterbacks, go ahead and piss your hard earned money away on watered down NHRA shows, or you'd agree with WJ.

    WJ was/is probably right with his complaint here but IMO it has to be tempered by the fact that that guy seemed to get upset all the time for sometimes questionable reasons. I once watched him lose a close one to a relatively unknown racer who ran a surprisingly good time and he began to bitch about engine builders "selling motors to whoever shows up with the cash". I'm sorry but....Isn't that what an engine builder's supposed to do? Or are they just supposed to build for you and others you approve?

  • @jenniferforbis3081
    @jenniferforbis3081 Před 10 lety +2

    I agree 100% with what WJ had to say, and when he's talking about the 99.9% of the 'other racers', he's not talking about the other NHRA big dog cars, he's talking about us weekend warriors that support the track every weekend when there isn't a national event. Our track has the same problem with water coming up through the track occasionally...however, what all you guys who seem to know it all fail to realize is, VHT+water=a skating rink. Even if you get a bunch of tiny drops of water seeping up through the track, once the tires go through that, they lost traction immediately. Usually when water starts coming up through the surface at our track, unless it's a super tiny amount, there's a damn good chance we're not racing that day.

  • @YoSuey
    @YoSuey Před 5 lety +1

    What WJ is trying to say, is that most of the focus goes to the fuel cars, which still are dangerously fast, but so are all the other classes. Pro Mod is only 100 mph slower than the fuel cars and 200 probably feels almost no different from 300 at that rate.

  • @ZWeinstein15
    @ZWeinstein15 Před 13 lety +4

    @fender4444 Im pretty sure you would be angry and vent your frustration's if you came close to wrecking your car at 205 mph due to piss poor track prep. If it wasnt for Warren Johnson several drivers would have wrecked not only at this race but Phoenix & Seattle earlier this year. Warren Johnson is the man and he is just trying to look out for his fellow comeptitors. Yes he's said some stuff that was uncalled for but it was in the heat of the moment.

  • @RaceMustangs
    @RaceMustangs Před 9 lety +1

    I need to add the problem has been track prep. The fuel cars prefer less compound and the crew only sprays to 1000 ft. When Pro Stock runs, the prep is similar to Stock, SS and Comp...more compound but they need it all the way to 1320 (we only need it to the 1/8 except maybe the SS/AH guys and Comp due to downforce difference). That has been the major gripe.

  • @MappythePoliceMouse
    @MappythePoliceMouse Před 7 lety +3

    Even now, NHRA still hasn't changed the 1,000 ft. racing for the fuel cars, but yet still 1,320 (Quarter Mile) racing for Pro Stock and the Pro Stock Bikes. They need to change that and just slow the fuel cars down a little like WJ said

  • @1951RKP
    @1951RKP Před 12 lety

    It's not so much the horsepower they are making at that point it's the lack of downforce because they run little angle on the rear spoiler to improve on top end performance. Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars have so much power they can use a lot of downforce to keep the cars tracking down track. I mention that previously. Trust me you take a 2350 pound PS car with 1400 plus horsepower and the tracks not treated properly on the top end they will get lose. That's what WJ is upset about.

  • @mpars77
    @mpars77 Před 8 lety +36

    Sorry to say for all the haters on here but WJ is exactly right. NHRA wrongly made the decision to move to 1000' and as a consequence these issues happened. NHRA leadership lacks the foresight and intelligence to run the largest sanctioning body in drag racing.

      @TurboHawkV6 Před 6 lety +3

      I lost interest when they started shortening the runs, it was hard to relate to the speeds and times.
      It didn't take long before the E.T.s and speeds were back up where they were at the full 1320'.
      Put restrictions on the speeds of the cars, yeah, how has that worked out for NASCAR? It became boring and stagnated evolution, because people were then trying to find ways around the rules instead of improving the overall package.
      I understand that the cars are getting faster than anyone could have imagined decades ago, but that's what happens. The answer is not to outright slow cars down, but to improve safety.

    • @SwineBrothers
