  • @mirage1314
    @mirage1314 Před 4 lety +451

    Hey guys, psychology student here. I think this needs a bit of a balance.
    A lot of clinical studies tend to suggest that elongated states of sadness and psychological distress can lead to (sometimes permanent) cognitive abilities reduction (read lower IQ test results) and lessened accomplishment overall. This is not contradictory with the HDT because HDT is about motivation and perceived value, not cognitive abilities. Think of it as a mitigating effect, like a damage buff you'd cast on yourself to mitigate some raw damage reduction that increases with time. Since the reduction starts low, you'll only feel the buff at first but if the fight keeps going for long enough, you might still end up with a nerf.
    I mean, that's sick awesome to be able to deal with tough shit on our own and it's important to be aware of the bright side of every situation. Most of the times HDT effect will be enough to get you through it and find an effective solution. Just don't be afraid of asking a dispell to a healer, if you feel like it !

    • @mirage1314
      @mirage1314 Před 4 lety +24

      @@Xenion02 Pretty tricky tbh, earlier on I was doing a simple research about the link between two factors and almost all I could find was some pseudo-scientific non-sense.
      If you're looking for food for thoughts, I suggest you roam around wikipedia to get some basic concepts straight, like what a behavior is, or what the officially recognized personnality disorders are, and then take a deep-dive on a subject you're curious about with Google Scholar (focusing on experiments processes and results). I really value quality of the information over everything else, which includes freshness, and things are moving pretty fast in this field.
      You can also check Veritasium for some socio-cognitive psychology insights but you'll get around it fast. Might help get a sense of some logics easier tho.

    • @mirage1314
      @mirage1314 Před 4 lety +4

      @@Gedeongedza Eh, better picturing it with casual images than not at all right ? Sorry if it offended you, I meant only helpfulness. More an abstract representation than a description tho, psychological distress is of course nothing like receiving a spell in a game, neither is cognitive abilities like damage potential. Proper way to convey the message would be like : "One effect starts from zero and ramps up, the other doesn't directly vary in intensity but starts at some helpful value. Benefitting from the latter doesn't mean that you're safe and shouldn't get help, or that pain is fine because it's also positive in some way." Sounds scarrier to me.

    it was still a memorable scene for me, but i wouldnt say it was sadness that drove me in that instance. instead, i would describe it as determination. Just as midna begins to open up and truly become a hero, she is hit by this "curse" of sorts. it was not a slow slog to the castle, mourning her injuries, but a "oh s***, gotta save her. fighting is too dangerous, the monsters can wait"

      Yes, much more can be said for the empathy with Midna in this sequence. We just start liking her and forgiving her for the disturbing way she treats us in the beginning of the game, and then this moment really cements that sentiment. Suddenly we know how much we care. That said, DTG's observations about just how low a point it is make a lot of sense. The sadness, the determination, the caring, all on a path to fix what's broken. One of a number of examples of how this game can teach us, emotionally, to be heroes, better than >99% of any lecture or lesson.

    Great vid. Spot on. Though I'd like to add one critique of this section of gameplay itself. It's a shame that the combat music still plays as you approach enemies. And from memory, once you disengage, the lament starts over, I think...? Had that combat music been muted, or ignored outright, that would have further enhanced the somber mood.

    This is how I felt the first time I played. Breath of the Wild. When I started to recover memories and saw just how much pain Zelda underwent and how she struggled with her powers, it all made me that much more motivated to go save her, to end her suffering and see her finally be happy. Same with the champions, it was so striking seeing them as these people, so confident that they were going to take down Calamity Ganon, and then die before they even had a chance.
    I fought so hard to find all the memories, free all the divine beasts, I finished the game in two or three days. That’s on top of school and babysitting. I didn’t even bother with the shrines save for the number I needed to free the master sword (which O went back to every time I gained a new Heart Container to see if I could finally pull it out after I initially found it) And when I finally reached Ganon, that battle was so satisfying to me. Just to finally beat him down, to free Zelda, and then watch her cast him into oblivion...
    Nothing could top that feeling. That the 100 year suffering was finally over. That we won.
    It was so great.

    Twilight Princess was my first Zelda game - when my family got it, my sister and I just grabbed a random game from the shelf because our dad said "pick one" as we had just gotten a Wii. Both my sister and I got trapped in the game, playing over and over, starting a new game almost as soon as we ended another.
    We both played piano, and while my sister immediately gravitated towards learning Hyrule Field, the first one I learned was Midna's Lament, because every time we got to that point we would do our best to avoid every enemy, just to continue the haunting, mournful, yet frantic music. That was the first game (and still only one of two games) that made me set aside any plans I had in side quests, in exploration, in the rest of the game, just for the urgency of "someone I care about is in trouble, I need to go NOW". Other games, they're like "it's an emergency! you must go at once!" and I'll be puttering along, nosing into everything, not really all that worried about it. I know *logically* that Twilight Princess is the same, that no matter how fast I go, the result is still the same. Nevertheless, I still hurry every single time.

    Midna's Desperate Hour is the reason Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game. I only played TWP rather recently (maybe two years ago). When I first played it i was enjoying it quite a bit, the gameplay was fun if a bit repetitive, the story was interesting, and Midna had a surprisingly complex character arc that started with her being rather annoying and by the time I got to the water temple she was already my favorite companion from an LoZ game, then I beat the water temple... That segment was long, melancholy, and despite the lack of a timer felt incredibly urgent. By the time I made it to Princess Zelda, I was bawling, now I cry fairly easily, but not usually with media. This segment really got to me and I have yet to have a videogame surpass it in pure emotional strength. The closest was the end of the pacifist run for Undertale and even that was not quite as good.

    Midna's Lament is one of the most beautiful piano melodies, or really, one of the most beautiful song I've ever heard in a video game. It's very simple, but so full of emotion and you can feel it. You can see it in your head. It evokes an emotion from you, even though it sounds sad, it's almost like the song is telling you "This is it, you have to get Vengeance. Go do it, finish this once and for all!" It's both hopeless, and inspiring at the same time. It just keeps going.

    I am an intensely dedicated Mass Effect fanatic. When I finally got to play Andromeda for the first time I was in a state of hopeless depression after having broken my heart over a lost love. I played that game to death, left no stone unturned, and fought with all the passion of an N7 level operative.. but I have no happy memories of it, and I never will.. 😔

  • @stormcrowlegendary3512

    That hedonistic theory. I've used that to my advantage often. All through high school in fact. Even in my early adulthood it stood as a powerful force. Fact of the matter is, in my lowest state, when depression had me at the lowest I could go, it strangely saved my life. Nothing good could come of death, in fact it would only force things to never change at best. So I hung on. I never found that study, I just figured it out on my own. it works.

    I played Twilight Princess back in the day and it's kind of curious that I didn't remember this part at all. It DID however leave strong impressions in me through moments of intense despair and hopelessness; but I think I felt a bit betrayed and disappointed in most of my strong memories about it.
    Having only played Link to the Past before it, I remember feeling it promised to be such a radically different game in tone, which blew my mind and left me in a state of daze and anticipation as to what was going to happen and what path the game would take, but then feeling a bit betrayed when it "pulled back in the last minute".
    The first moment that left me in shock is when you are first transformed into a wolf and have to seek Zelda. But then you get to her and she's pretty much dead. It's too late and from the get go, Zelda's gone. That shook me because it did look like the game was going to go in a whole other direction with its lore and central pieces, with Midna and the Twilight.
    The second one was when you return to your village and it's been raided while you were gone. I remember getting there and "wait a moment, everyone I knew is dead?" (or was it just the children? Been way too long). Again I was kept going through on my mind as to how Link was going to tackle this and how would his rage and sorrow manifest over this violent tragedy. But in the end, nvm, everyone's fine, day's saved...
    To me It felt very "cowardly" from a writing standpoint to not follow through with any of those and to this day I remember TP as a game that showed me great promise and then took it away (much in the same way I view FF XII, which to me has the best setup of any FF and then.... oof). Also in line with this, I guess, I was pretty disappointed in "sexy Midna" as I felt it removed a lot of her otherworldliness in favour of generic fan-service/princessfication/etc....
    Despite all that, though, I'm pretty keen on replaying TP and seeing how I feel about it now, over 10 years later

It's the only reason I made it through my entire life, it gave me something to live for. I loved Midna, I saw her as me. This part really hurt me, but I also really enjoyed it. It showed me we can still take back what we lost and we can still have hope. Thank you Twilight Princess, all of Zelda. I love you ❤

    I think people persist more when sad is because if you just give up and give into sadness, it doesn't get better. Even if your at your lowest point, if you don't keep trying to rise higher, you'll just say where you are. Miserable, sad, and not enjoying life. You strive for better because the alternative is worse.

    The first Kingdom Hearts game does a similar thing to this that works for the same core reasons (for those unfamiliar, you have your magic weapon stripped away from you by an antagonist, dismissively informed that you were never the chosen one and in fact you were "just the delivery boy", and then to add insult to injury the antagonist tosses you a wooden toy sword). And what on the surface sounds like it would be frustrating (you now do next to no damage and are stripped of some key abilities just as you're entering a level with the toughest enemies in the game so far), instead became one of the parts of the game I remember the most vividly, and makes it one of my favourite games.

  • @CalebWillden
    @CalebWillden Před 5 lety +1

    I don't think Nintendo were specifically trying to implement Hedonistic Discounting Theory, but I think they understood it nonetheless; that when the hero falls, their resurgence becomes ever sweeter.
    I didn't realize how that sort of thing affects *how* one plays the game, though.
    I think I recently experienced this with The Way Remastered. The somber mood the game immediately set and the way the story is presented changed the way I thought while I started playing. The main menu becomes part of the opening scene, and credits appear as you play like a movie. I immediately wanted to understand what was happening and felt empathy for the main character, Tom, and what he was going through and trying to accomplish.
    Instead of playing a puzzle platformer, I was trying to steal one of the monopolistic company spaceships using my professional expertise so I could bring back my wife, to finish the work we had started before everything went wrong. It's been a fantastic game so far and every twist either warms my heart or twists my soul.
    I'm not sure HOW relevant that actually is to this video, but it reminded me of it. THanks again for such a deep, informative video, and for sharing your own experiences.

      I think you hit the nail on the head Caleb, if a game's story really strikes a chord with you, you aren't just "playing", you're "sharing the experience" with the character. You sort of feel responsible as opposed to just trying to beat a level.
      Also I just looked up that game and I'm gonna have to play it at some point, it looks pretty interesting

    This is much of what I was aiming to describe when I did a video review of Furi. Players are pretty much pushed to their limit against The Burst and The Edge. But then, the terrible and tragic "curb stomp boss fight" against The Beat feels directly dissatisfying and puts you into a very sad mood as the prisoner escapes and the game's credits play. The game doesn't even identify that there is anything more to do, and yet players will actively seek out such a solution - eventually discovering the true final boss. The Star, who makes even The Burst seem like a pathetic joke. But at that point, most players will give it as many attempts as needed; and many of them wouldn't have the strength or persistence if the game were going with constant escalation.

It made me stressed, it made me laugh, it made me feel. But this part of the game got me good. I've only ever cried twice during video games (the other time being the end of Wind Waker). I can just remember random heartbreaks and random tears for some reason. Im not super emotional when I play games, and im usually either focused or stressed. But this game and most of the other Zelda titles really makes me feel, and this is a good example. It's pure emotion for somebody who doesnt tend to get many from games.

    I love Midna as a character. All the other Legend of Zelda sidekicks feel like game mechanics, or in Fi's case a your battery is running out alarm. But Midna feels like a real person. She has ups and downs and she actually goes through the story not as a sidekick but as a partner. Yes Midna also introduces some necessary gameplay mechanics but unlike the other characters who feel like they exist to give us the gameplay mechanics, with Midna the gameplay mechanics seem to exist to help give us Midna. Instead of Midna being an exucse for these mechanics to exist, these mechanics exist to make Midna have some gameplay involvement. Becuase while Fi, Navi, or the King of Red Lions could all not exist and those games would all still be the same, if Midna didn't exist, Twilight Princess wouldn't exist.

    I think it depends on the kind of problems and the mood for me, If I'm angry or have something on my mind It's harder to concentrate which leads to quiting earlier. Same goes for the kind of Difficulty and type of problems, If they're too challenging they'll only aggravate the negative emotion, And if it's Reading/Memorizing than a negative emotion will ruin the whole thing for me. I sort of get what the theory points to, that you're willing to try more if you feel unaccomplished but not necessarily in a bad mood. Love your work by the way!

    Interesting. I think it's cool this scene impacted you that way. I don't recall feeling it as strongly though I do recall very strongly a similar effect from the Zelda I played in middle school--Ocarina of Time.
    For me what OoT had but what I *felt* TP lacked was exactly this, a sense of peril and loss. I was never motivated in the game really because Ocarina uses the entire first 3 dungeons to establish the stakes. You meet the Kokiri, the Castletownfolk, the Rangers, the Kakarikans, the Gorons, and the Zora, embed yourself in their lives, perform their side quests, explore their lands in the childhood phase and then when Ganondorf ambushes you in the Temple of Time everything goes to hell. After the cut scene you wake up 7 years have passed and everything the game spent hours introducing you to is in ruins. The castle is literally gone--a crater, Zelda is missing, castle town is full of the dead, Zora's domain is frozen, the lake is drained, the volcano is erupting and Goron's are being eaten by a dragon, the ranchers have been enslaved, the Kokiri are locked in their homes due to monsters overrunning the forests and all of your friends are missing. Oh, and you're stuck in this future with almost none of your equipment and (because you opened the Door of Time) all of it is YOUR FAULT. All of what you talked about regarding not relying on old scripts and feeling more motivated was true for me especially during the first 3 adult dungeons. Navi was never in peril but everyone else was. I internalized all of that sadness pretty hard at 13-14.
    Twilight didn't hit me like that because you're introduced to each region ALREADY in Twilight and though the townsfolk feel a general sense of disease it's not the same explicit physical peril as in OoT and after you lift the Twilight people don't really appreciate how much you saved them. Nobody is calling your their sword brother and naming their future kids after you. But I see now that for you, and perhaps other TP players, especially at the right age, you felt that melancholy but it was very specifically localized around Midna rather than the world of Hyrule in general. Thanks for this insight.
