Epic. The sound of wooden racket to ball to grass, cooing Wimbledon pigeons, Dan Maskell’s silky voice, a mesmerised, complimentary crowd who knew they were witnessing a match for history, and not least two tennis titans battling it out in an age where finesse, magic, net playing and nimble talent were king. Just the best 👌🏻

This is why Borg won Five consecutive Wimbledons. He made it his business to find what it takes to win on grass.
You will never again see a clay court specialist that is this keen to come to the net as Borg.
Couple that with his lightening reflexes that at times saw him hitting winners from net cords while standing right up at the net, and you have a player that will be very difficult to remove from the top ten list of all time greats.

Over the years there have been several champions, perhaps even stronger than these two myths, but no one has ever managed to produce the same emotions, the same incomparable atmosphere that Borg, the Swedish bear, and Mc Enroe, the Super Brat, managed to produce with this match. Yeah Borg was so talented that could play effectively both from the baseline and at the net. Also, in this match I noticed that Borg's backhand was far more solid than McEnroe's one. McEnroe's backhand was relatively weak in this match, he didn't impress too much srength and accuracy to his backhand shots.

ive never been impressed with mcenroe's apparent 'genius' at the net. ive seen pretty mediocre netplay from him only. it seems some rosy tinted nostalgia blinded lenses that are being pointed at mcenroe. sampras was the superior volleyer, in fact far better than federer is.sampras' volleys and approach shots were just more aggressive than federer's. the way he got the ball to spin so viciously and get so low with his approach shot to the net, and then the volleys were also so viciously executed. although there was alot of naivety in the netrush era.
way more than half of approaches to the net went the way of the opponent hitting a successful passing shot instead. and the netrusher relied on merely probability to win a match-that is the probability of winning enough percentage of the net approaches. this percentage play meant matches were much tighter, barely any breaks in serve. alot of tiebreaks, lots of 7-6, 7-6 scorelines. it was the tennis equivalent of general haig's WWI going over the top tactics.

When Borg won his first French Open in 1974, Fred Perry was asked after thematch if Borg could ever win at Wimbledon to which he replied, 'Certainly'. He knew that Borg had been brought up playing on the fast Swedish indoor courts and had learned the proper footwork to anticipate and move properly around a court, so that combined with his natural speed he would be able to get away with not serving and volleying much. A very shrewd judge and prediction.

Great clips. Most others mostly show McEnroe going on the offensive, winning the tiebreak, then kind of out of nothing loses the 5th... Borg was way more versatile than that. Winning Paris on clay 6 times and Wimbledon on grass 5, back to back. Come on! He must have had some skills... Thinking of Nadal maybe at his peak but both Federer and Djokovic struggled at this.

As riveting as I found this match and the other great professional tennis matches of the ‘80s at the time, they seem almost quaint in comparison to the most recent generation of great tennis rivalries. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Alcaraz and the others strike me as having upped the quality and tempo of the game by several notches. I truly wonder whether a Borg or a McEnroe would have reached the same heights in today’s tennis world. I’m sure many will disagree, but it’s just how it seems to me after having followed the evolution of professional tennis for more than 50 years.

I think the only way for Borg to have moved forward in tennis instead of quit was to complete the transition to a one-handed backhand, instead of continue with that monstrosity of a backhand he had. It was probably good enough in the era of wood rackets, but when graphite came into the picture, even McEnroe had to transition to graphite. I look at Borg's backhand now, and he won DESPITE it, not because of it.

It looks like a sunday stroll in the park. I know these are wooden rackets, but if you got dominik thiem on there he would be hitting every shot as brutally hard as possible.
