    This is a really great tutorial. Just one point of criticism perhaps: your cassette isn't big enough to hold that much tape on the wheel 😅 Or rather: there is too much tape on the wheel for the physical space available in the cassette.

    This was groovy as always. I noticed you don't use any guides. I use them a lot, because I can align things to them without having to go into the align and distribute controls as often. I can add them as I go along and draw an object, add a guide or two on their centers, and align stuff to them where needed. For those who do not know yet: Even guides can be rotated, even to exact angles, then duplicated and manipulated much the same way as paths, but you cannot curve them.
    I also always start with one vertical and one horizontal centered to the page, so it's always there to make it easier to have the centers of bounding boxes and what not snap to to their shared center, or on center horizontally or vertically and off center to the other.

    Great tutorial again Nick! Learned so much from them. I recently made the same rainbow effect, but I did it by drawing the outer line of the rainbow with the pen tool, duplicated it, flipped it over and used the interpolate path effect to create the inner lines. It's so cool how many ways there are to achieve something in Inkscape.

      Just turn on your snaps, draw a rectangle inside the clear area, make it the size you want, click on it with the cursor to bring up the arrows, grab the horizontal arrow in the middle top or bottom to skew it, turn on a white fill and adjust the opacity down until you are happy with the look.

    Clear tutorial Nick. As I know you also do Affinity Designer tutorials it would be great to see you do this one in AD as well. Inkscape was my introduction to vector drawing with V1 back in 2021. Have been using AD the last 2 years and reluctant to pay for the upgrade to V2 as I see limited improvements. Having just installed the latest Inkscape I see substantial improvements since last using it and am considering making Inkscape my preferred SVG program. Hence my interest in seeing the workflow difference in you doing this tutorial in AD, particularly the rainbow background. I did watch your video comparing these two products.

    Thanks for the video. I think that using interpolate subpath + Path > Fracture would be an easier method for creating the colored stripes in the background. Also, the tape wouldn't fit into the cassette if the centers are placed like that (imagine how the roll extends in the hidden part).

    Very nice tutorial, thanks ! I have one question though.
    At around 1:48, you transform a rectangle into a trapezoidal by selecting the nodes and moving them symmetrically along the path. How do you do this with the mouse ? I know I can use the comma and period keys and there are few other ways to achieve the same results, but I guess there must be a way to do so with the mouse, I just could'nt figure out how.

    • @jakep.7826
      @jakep.7826 Před 6 měsíci +4

      With your node tool selected, you should see an icon that looks like for 4 double-sided arrows (2 on top, 2 on the bottom). When you hover over it a pop-up message will read "show transformation handles for selected nodes." Click it to turn it on (it's off by default). Once that's on, click on the rectangle and then click and drag over the two top nodes of the rectangle. You should now see a little arrow sticking out of the selected nodes (it may be a really small arrow depending on how your Inkscape is set up). Click on either of the arrows sticking out of the two top nodes and drag it in while holding down the shift button. That should do it.

      I'm completely new to this kinda stuff, I only downloaded inkscape today, but from following this through to the end, I found a simple way is to just make a rectangle, click to get the rotate option, use the middle arrows to skew it, then duplicate, make sure they're the same angle, then drop it down a layer.
      I had a few difficulties when colouring but it gave me more chance to play about with the tools and create more objects and layers etc. Hope this helps!
