  • Sometimes you see something you didn't see previously that changes your plans. That was the case today as we went to move these sheep to the pasture we had planned to lamb them on but decided to lamb them where they are. You want to have enough forage to not have to move them far once they start lambing. You also want cover for them during rain events. After talking about it with Travis we decided to leave them on the cereal rye to lamb and move them to the fence line with large cedar trees available when significant rain is in the forecast.

This is one of the all time best videos on grazing ever…. Why? You are showing us what successful, profitable management is really all about. Starting with the plan, dealing with the reality of the land, weather, shelter, water, equipment, soil health, and animals today. Stating that you are willing to start over with your grazing chart shows the power of a humble heart. Taking the time to talk it over and discuss options, and you give credit to Travis as well. Thank you.

Thank you very much. I appreciate the value you find in the video. As you've heard it said, "Once the battle starts, the plan goes out the window but the planning process is invaluable." This is the reality of agriculture. The thing is, we never know how things will work out until it's too late.

Was that in beans last year? Just curious when the rye was drilled.

Yes it was in beans last year and flew on cereal rye over beans. But I really think the cereal rye we drilled after combining beans is much more vegetative and better feed now than this that is already heading out.
