Personally, the tool wall is what gives your shop identity. Although I understand that you cant keep every tool on the wall, I think the old tools deserve to be displayed.
As a wise man once said, storage drawers is where tools go to get lost. Hope the new system works out for you.
Yes but i guess he found it cluttered. I never really like tools on display like that as they just rust and it isnt as functional as you would think constantly looking a 20 planes you never use
I notice the older I get the longer my legs get. That ground just keeps getting further and further away. My favorite blacksmith tongs have turned out to be my pickup tongs. I'm always grabbing them to pickup things I've dropped.
keeping tables clear and each tool in its place is something i am trying to force feed myself now and its interesting seeing someone else who has made the same mistakes coming to terms with a similar solution.
We are all on the same journey.

Every flat surface in my home is constantly filled with stuff and cleaned off in an endless cycle.
Great organization but I like to see all the old tools displayed. It's what makes a woodshop cool I think.

Cribbing are a life saving and simple piece of equipment. I used them in a house fire back in ‘03 when a house collapsed on the first in/SAR team. House collapsed and as a FAST team member we used those with Kevlar bags to lift a house to rescue my brother firefighters

Any flat surface in a shop is a table, doesn’t matter what it is
Man I've been down the road of drawers (Lista, Lyon, Vidmar, etc) vs. hanging tools on the wall. Hanging tools on the wall is definitely the better approach in a personal shop. The tool wall enables you quickly scan across a wall of tools which helps your brain conceive ideas / solutions for the problem at hand.
I like tools on the wall and consumables in drawers like drill bits, grinder/cutting wheels, oils, greases, sand paper, ect

It is funny, this is what he preached for a long time, then all of the sudden he switched over to boxes and drawers. I feel like we all go through phases like this....ever evolving.
@@south_coast I see that too. I've seen him go through minimalism and "maximalism" (hehe) phases twice now. Renewals of faith. Changing interests and different hobbies. Yep, we all go through similar phases in life. I enjoy watching him grow and change. He's been helping me along my journey for a decade now.
@@JerodMatlock Same here. It is nice to see someone else shell out the money for nice cabinets/drawers and see how he likes them before making a jump like that. I always like the buy once cry once mentality, so it makes me a bit slower to jump into a new setup like this.

Mr. W., I know you know that if you scrape a little bar soap on them long screw threads they go in way easier. That’s how we do it in Louisiana.
And I’ll tell you something else. I didn’t see how you secured the toolbox to the cribbing.
I caught a glimpse of the blue box a couple of video’s back. I’ve been waiting for it to pop up again! Awesome little box there!
If that thing ever warps you can just push down on the top of the toolbox with your excavator until it's square again.

After seeing it as a short, I was hoping this video would drop today! It looks so simple, but so good at the same time. One day when I have a shop I know I’ll reference back to your videos to help set it up.
I'm 89 year old & over those years I've seen many changes. One of those changes is tool storage. Cabinet drawers are great.
Lista are the best I’ve ever used. Back when I was an aerospace welder, our toolboxes for tools and tig welding consumables were Lista boxes. I like the fact that it won’t let you open a drawer if another one is open. Great feature to make sure that it never falls forward on to you. The mechanical locking mechanism is also really simple and reliable.
Something waist high will always gather clutter.

i would like to make a recommendation, always lay your hand planes on their sides, this way the knives wont get dinged or miss-adjusted even on a soft mat or carpet.. i hope this helps. please take this as a constructive recommendation. be well and be happy! thanks for sharing.

That's some serious cribbing! I had a thought. Did you ever think of putting the cribbing and the cabinet behind and into the wall there? You'd open that space up even more and you drawers would be assessable right on the wall. Of course we don't know what is stowed behind that wall.... Thank you for all you do......Pray for you family daily!
In our family we call it horizontal surface disease. I have been diagnosed terminal with it.
The Gap in the cribbing would make a great place for storing dowel
In a previous video, you said you now have a rule for the inside of a drawer, which was: nothing can touch. I followed your rule and man it really does help keeping things in order. Prevents you from cramming things into the drawers.

Interesting bank of drawers,I sure like the cribbing stand. I worked for my wrestling coach in Jr.high and high school,and on the summer break he moved houses,literally moved houses. Cribbed them up on I beams and pulled them to a new location with a old Oshkosh truck. Did a whole small town one year when Monsanto contaminated the water table. Great video,been working on reclaiming flat surfaces in my shop,your recent videos on organization have been inspiring.
I'm 70 and I live in a 3 story house. It's tiring at first, but now I run up and down like a kid.
That cribbing could do double duty as a temp foundation for your house too. The work bench got me to thinking about a work bench my great grandfather had (1910s-1940s house builder.) His work bench was also a well type. He told ne when a board or timber twisted, the old guys would do one of two things. Either replace the timber or add some board to two adjacent sides and then re-square the piece again. Unfortunately I didnt get the bench, One of his grandson's, my uncle got it.

I used to work for Lista in Holliston, MA, I welded the workbench legs and more in the late 90's.
I still have my toolbox. The drawers are rated 220 lbs and 440lbs.
With the full walls of all drawers, multi-story high the engineers would climb the drawers instead of dragging the ladder around.
The military would drop test the toolboxes too it's amazing what they can withstand.
Never thought I'd see a west -coaster buy an eastern toolbox ;-)
FYI you can open 2 drawers at the same time.
Forgot to mention your toolbox is a 450 (4x50mm,1x100mm, 1x150mm), it was usually mounted under a maple butcher block topped workbench, that's why there isn't a top lip on the back and sides. Look for the knockouts (like electrical boxes).
The box can be reconfigured to put the drawers in any sequence you want, you aren't stuck with the small ones on top.

I love it! My grandfather was a CPR machinist who made all of his own tools. He too, had them in a cabinet on a cribbed base, above which hung a very old picture of a train trestle in the Rockies. There is no sense in being a slave to function… there has to be a nod to your own sentimental aesthetic or you might as well be working in a dentist’s office!

Oh! The cribbing gaps could be used for storing short molding strips, short dowels, short rebar, and bar steel.

The base is wasted space. Would be better if you stacked two or bought one tall one. You can always use the bottom cabinet for things that you don't often use.

Hi Cody, my family business uses cribbing to suspend houses and structures in the air. Either to repair basements or to raise homes out of a flood zone. In the flood zone case, people either put their homes on stilts or add a garage underneath.

I have a love of fine wood working and I also do alot of mechanic work in my shop... I'm torn because I constantly getting black finger prints on my projects.. As much as I try to keep them separate it just doesn't happen

Lista cabinets are the absolute best. My old supervisor didn't believe the weight capacity on them so I literally stood right in the drawer. Absolutely loved the bench I was able to build... complete with butcher block across the top.

Yeah, we’re getting pretty close to it.
Up until I heard the drawers are rated for 400 lbs, I thought this was overkill.
Not so much for the big Lista Cabinets that can be full of heavy fasteners, Lathe Chucks, machining vises, rotary tables. A large lathe Chuck or rotary table can easily be over 100 pounds.

I like it. Adds solidity to the shop. I’d enclose the bottom spaces with the left over jigs to stop the dust collection. Nice!

Got to say I would never build a one story house. Not cost efficient. Most of your money is in the foundation and roofing. Basements and second stories are only about 20% more to build. I do understand the desire to simplify though.

Caster wheels are my newest obsession. I have limited space so having everything possible on strong wheels is a game changer.
I had a guy tell me a long time ago a work bench should hinge at the wall and hook on your belt. Then you cant walk away from a full bench ;)

We do have some fairly extreme cribbing situations of all sizes at work. It’s amazing what a sturdy, built with care set, can do you for.

You should maybe put a magnet on the cabinet to hold your larger pull saw. Just so their all in one place.
Flat surfaces always will attract "stuff".
