Made In Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness (2022) Review [4K]

  • At long last, this concludes my Made In Abyss series of reviews, and what a shame that it ends on such a low note. Like, I kind of, almost like this game overall, but I gotta be honest here; it's not very good. I guess you could call this a guilty pleasure, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone but the most diehard fans. It is a neat game though, and, looking back, I don't really hate it as much as I did when I was in the middle of playing it, but my darkest moments with this game made me want to pull my hair out and move on to something else.

Tbh this was my game of the year for 2022 in terms of fun. Felt like it really tried it's best to make a functioning loop with it's tight budget. While it has massive pacing issues, Poor level desgn in areas, Clunky combat and bad mechanics the game kinda had a unique charm for me. Felt like a old middleware PS2 game from a new but passionate team. I think it's largely carried by ocasionally good atmosphere, Enjoyable exploration a resource managment system that really makes you think about your preparations and punishes you alot for being overprepared due to the weight restrictions but punishes you a whole lot more for being underprepared. In spite of all it's shortcomings I do think it created a uniquely engaging experience and genuinely the best moment i've had in gaming in a long time was getting stuck on layer 3 hunting down critters to kill so I could try to make tail meat and slowly crawling my way out of there over the course of hours.
When I finally got to the surface I felt like a real cave raider. It was a feeling of accomplishment not even elden ring had managed to give me. I will say as a fan of the manga the fanservice does hit really hard as the manga goes much harder than the anime on worldbuilding to the point of having like actual journal notes to flesh things out even more. So being able to walk around parts of the abyss even with the games fault was a huge thing
Also just a note on PC atleast they patched it so you dont need to play hello abyss anymore. Guess the devs admitted it's a shitty part of the game

I have a really similar story with exploring the third layer for the first time. I was scrounging for supplies and killing every one of those docile critters that I could hoping for more tail meat. I really didn't want to have to restart. I struggled, but it was such a relief to make it all the way back home. If only I knew about that gathering upgrade that "increases gathering speed" as that would've made things so much easier.
I definitely feel like, subjectively, I actually enjoyed the game quite a bit. I mean, hell, I enjoyed it enough to go ahead and finish getting the platinum trophy on PS4. However, objectively speaking, if I'm going to recommend this game to others, then there's no getting around the mess of problems that it has. From what I understand, the issues with local wildlife respawning so much or the foreign cave raiders dodging your attacks were patched out months ago on PC and were only recently patched for the console versions, right before publishing this review. The same patch that omitted the requirement to complete "Hello Abyss" first. So, for a while, the PC version was way, way better than the console versions. Of course, I'm not gonna review the same game twice; it simply is what it is. But yeah, I'm with you, I don't hate this game all that much, looking back on it. I just wish it was better.

Now this is a game that would have fit the death stranding treatment

I'm actually surprised how similar it is to Death Stranding, what with the emphasis on traversal and using consumable tools to navigate the environment. It's a lot more simple and straightforward than Death Stranding and, for that, I'd say it's more effective. However, it's also, somehow, even jankier and less stable. If it was more polished and balanced, this might have had a chance at being somewhat okay.

I've been enjoining the game so far I cough the game on sale, I paid 8 USD for it on steam and maybe I've been enjoying this game because I focused on clearing the secondary missions, farming resources selling relics and leveling up straight forward before even touch the main story maybe that's the way the developers wanted us to play the game at the first place, who knows. I have played 16 so far on steam.

I played the same way, and it's usually how I go about playing video games. I try to go out of my way to see as much content as I can. I enjoyed the game as well, but certain unforeseen situations can make a dive extremely frustrating, and the combat is just bad. The latest patch certainly helped a lot; before that, the game was even more of a mess. I don't necessarily dislike this game, but it's so janky overall that I can't give it a recommendation to most people. I put in a total of 81 hours before I finally put the game down for good, and I'd say I started to get really annoyed as I got deeper into the 2nd and 3rd layers, but by the 4th and 5th layers I finally got a good handle of the mechanics and what to expect. It sure would've been nice if the upgrade descriptions in the skill tree were more clear; I could've had way more supplies much earlier if I went for the "increased gathering speed" right off the bat, but oh well.

You know, I never really hated the dialog in Dragon's Dogma. Granted, I only ever played with my single pawn and the occasional NPC ally for certain quests, but I was okay with it. Made In Abyss can have the characters loop their dialog a lot and in a surprisingly short time frame. It gets extremely annoying very quickly.

@@FourFaceButtons Yeah the pawns are chatty but from that clip you used the NPCs are way worse in this.
But I can't help myself, if I hear complaints about NPCs not shutting up, I bring up DD, even though I find them endearing instead of annoying.

Oh yeah, for sure, I get it. The DD meme is famous, and rightfully so.
