Being next to Ukraine, and with troublesome Transnistria, Moldova is very likely Putin's next target if he wins in Ukraine. However every single Baltic state is at high risk, and former Warsaw pact countries are also at risk. This is why, no matter what the cost, Putin must be denied any sort of victory in Ukraine, and must also be driven out of Crimea: and his bridge totally destroyed.

The tepid diplomatic and bureaucratic response to each of those blatant invasions has been quite obviously supportive of these changes. Ilan Mironovich Shor (Shor) is a Moldovan politician and chairman of the Shor Party, a populist Moldovan political party. He was previously arrested on money laundering and embezzlement charges related to the 2014 theft of $1 billion from Moldovan banks.
In advance of the 2021 Moldovan elections, Russia planned to undermine Moldovan president Maia Sandu and return Moldova to Russia's sphere of influence. To support this effort, Shor worked with Russian individuals to create a political alliance to control Moldova's parliament, which would then support several pieces of legislation in the interests of the Russian Federation. As of June 2022, Shor had received Russian support and the Shor Party was coordinating with representatives of other oligarchs to create political unrest in Moldova. In June 2022, Shor worked with Moscow-based entities to undermine Moldova's EU bid as the vote for candidate status was underway.

People who have no idea about what is happening in Transnistria and Moldova, have never been here, do not know the situation from the inside, dare to talk about bringing the NATO army here or fighting with Russia. study the history of this region, the war of 1992, its causes and why Transnistria separated from the MSSR, while still being part of the USSR.

Thank you for this timely report. I worry for Moldova. It brought tears to my eyes last fall when I saw a plea from their agricultural minister for a buyer for their apples! Apparently, they usually sell to Russia but refuse to do so as they under now sanctions. The border Transnitria was illegally annexed and has been occupied by troops from Russia that won't leave for years. I I think the EU application is underway but I wishit could be sped up. Sandu is excellent, btw! These people are relatively poor but generous to refugees and the cost of living has raised due to the war and energy cost.

Moldovan statehood never extended to the historical territory of Transnistria, and only in a short 50-year period from August 1940 to September 1990, the territories of Transnistria and Bessarabia were formally legally united into a union Soviet republic - the MSSR"
the authorities of Moldova, having decided to withdraw from the USSR and recognizing the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact as illegal, returned the situation to the state of 1940, excluding from its composition the state-forming part in the form of the territory of modern Transnistria.

Moldova is not meant to be a separate country. In fact, Principality of Moldova became a founding member of Romania in 1859 when it merged with Wallachia (they had Romanian language in common), under a Moldovan prince (Alexandru Ioan Cuza). "Republic of Moldova" is a sub-region of Moldova, and was never meant to be self-sufficient. In fact Principality of Moldova had all its historical capitals in Romania

This may deter the Russians from trying to do what they did in eastern Ukraine, where they said that the Russian speaking population were being persecuted. Turkey would hardly be considered a Western country. US has proposed allowing Asian countries to join, but China has a cow over it and other NATO countries don't want to add them.
NATO has not attacked other countries and stolen their land, nor moved Russia's or China's borders one inch. They just keep Russia and (would be) China within their own borders.
To any authoritarian dictator that sees some kind of glory in expending his countries' borders, NATO is a "threat" because it prevents them from expanding and invading.
Look at China, it claims waters right off the coast of Vietnam, Malaysia, Phillipines, all "belong to China" and harrass their fishermen if they try to fish there. These waters are so far away from China, you could fit the entire country of Germany in the space, but China still insists they are theirs.
These countries should start to look at making a defensive organization like NATO to protect themselves from an almost guaranteed attack from China (either direct military or further sovereignty incursion like already is happening). It may be too late as China has already bribed off many of those governments' officials and are turning them into Soviet era style puppets that take orders from China.

Personally, as a non 'specialist' I cannot see how Russia can do anything in Moldova. They are a land-logged country with no access to Russia. The limited military presence can never be a threat as they cannot be supplied. In the end, if they try to take over it's a matter of removing them by force and gat Moldova back into ONE country. Move them into the EU. NATO will not be possible as they have no army, but they could be part of the NATO realm of protection.
