They will make a pre-cut key for you and send you an OBDII programmer to plug in and pair the new key and then you can get in there and turn off your MyKey restrictions and have a fully functioning 2nd key! It's clean and the way Ford Intended rather than some of the "hacks" including Forscan, aluminum foil, throwing fobs out the window, etc... it's not free, but it's most likely competitive with local locksmith pricing and certainly less than the dealership!
This video was made for a few different people asking about MyKeys this week on the 2013+ Ford Escape Facebook group.
If you've just stumbled across it, been dealing with a mysterious "MyKey" prompt on the dash, or are looking to set up some boundaries for a learning driver in your family, this video is for you.
The 2013-2016 Ford MyKey system (featuring a 2013 Ford Escape SE) will allow an "ADMIN KEY" to configure a regulated / restricted key that the car will recognize and modify the driving capabilities for that driver.
If you've purchased the vehicle second hand and you have existing MyKey's set up, this video also shows you how to clear the keys back to ADMIN KEYS so long as you have the ADMIN KEY to access the MyKey settings. NOTE: Once a key is configured as the MyKey, it can not modify the MyKey settings. Only an ADMIN KEY can do that.

This is a great video for a 72 year-old non-tech. I bought a car today and realized one of the keys was a "my key". I zapped it! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Ford told me that the admin key had to just be nearby but I had to switch keys and start the car with my other key and I was able to access the mykey menu with the other key and remove the issues. Thank you!
My key is not in the drop down list. It only shows Vehicle and Display. What is that?
Like why the fuck does this feature even exist? I can't deactivate it because the option literally disappeared. It says my key active but there's no option to shut it off im so pissed

I agree. Wtf mine is stuck with the restrictions because my family member left the administration key at a friend's. There should just be a simple code to set and unset these stupid restrictions.

One thing ALL of you are missing with these videos, is that you do NOT have access or the option to "Clear MyKeys" if you are using the MyKey vs the admin key. I am not sure how every single video and forum I've found has dropped the ball on this very obvious issue. I was playing around with my work truck key last night and for some reason thought I was going to be better off with MyKey instead of admin.. boy was I wrong. Woke up this morning and had to "buckle up" in order to unmute the radio and it just got better from there... Wish there was an alternative that actually works WITHOUT the AdminKey
Exactly, I searched for how to clear MyKey with NO Admin key, and other than buying some tpe of "computer" that hooks up to the car, there''s no way to do it hat i've found
@@RabidWolf1966 I was able to get the admin key from my work to reset mine back to admin but I did see a video that is gonna sound very “tin-foil hat’ish” no pun intended but the guy wrapped a piece of foil around the key when he inserted it in the ignition, which didn’t allow the computer to recognize the specific key. I’d be curious to know if it works..

@@purpx33purp91 The only way I was able to fix it was to get the master key from the person who manages them. I did see another video where the person said wrapping your key in foil would basically make it a master key but I would think it would do the same thing my basic ass extra key does. I got it so I could leave the main fob/key in ignition and still be able to manually lock/unlock the doors. I tried the other day to use my basic key (just a plain mechanical key) in the ignition but when I inserted it, it said something like "key not found" so I imagine thats prolly what it would do/say if you wrapped the fob key with foil cause it would prevent the truck from seeing that its the master or child key. So it only works if you are the administrator,. I bought this car like this and my mom is the owner, so how do we get rid of this? You actually showed something that I can't do myself because like you said you have to be the administrator
How about explaining what an "admin key" is if your are going to talk about it. I was playing around with my 13 escape and now can't access the menu items to disable the "my key". No one seems to address this.
Admin key means the original master key, the sore key will not work to reset mykey. Ford really dropped the ball here.

I am considering buying a 2012 Escape for my daughter. The ad indicates they lost the Admin Key and there are restrictions set on the MyKey. While looking up information on the Admin key I came across something I'm confused about and wondering if you have information on. If one sets up MyKey, does the odometer only show the miles THAT SPECIFIC MYKEY has been driven? What I read implies this and given the miles on the vehicle are really low for a 10 year old vehicle I'm trying to make sure this isn't the first red flag of a scam/lemon. Thanks!
Hello, I am trying to solve the problem in the video but I did happen to come across the answer for your question. The MyKey does tell you how many miles are on the key if you look for it in the information tab, however there is still a constant odometer in the display that still tells you the total miles on the car, regardless of what key you have in it.
probably just low becos of tcm issues/recalls. had 2 ford focus’s but escapes and other models around the same year were also affected
I have a 2016 Escape and the only options I have in settings are, display, language and convenience. There is nothing beyond those options. My wife somehow activated a mykey and i have absolutely no way to deactivate it.
Hey there- yeah its a big pain in the butt. If you have a second key, that is not restricted/configured for MyKey, use that one to go into the menu as the "Admin Key" and get to the MyKey settings menu. You can't get to the settings with the restricted key. If you ONLY have the restricted key and no other key, you'll need to make a new key to access it. Now you don't NEED a full bells and whistles button and remote key programmed if you go to a locksmith- you can just do a valet key and just the programming of that simple key is all that is needed to get back into the menu settings. If you DO want a new full blown key with fob/buttons, the vendor we linked has prices that are better than the dealer, but still recommend shopping around locally if you want to make sure you have best price.
Here is the link to the DIY programming of a new spare Admin Key using Toms Key Company- they have a cool service where you take a pic of your key and they scan the picture and cut it to match so that its shipped to you pre cut. What if the mykey option doesn't pop up? How do I take it off?
I did this on a 2013 focus and now It doesn't show mykey and both keys are limited. Information shows two keys and one as administrator, but neither one will show in settings 🤷🏼♂️

Oh man I don't think I've seen that before- any idea if any of your keys may be replacements? One of your 2 should always be a master key over the other
One show's admin, I was able to clear the limitations for volume/speed, it was fine, I had remote start added and the admin key is worn out so I wanted to switch them, I cleared mykey and now nothing 🤷🏼♀️

I dont have MyKey settings. Only Driver Assist, Vehicle, and Display. I bought this car used, its a 2018 Ford. The Volume Key limit is set TO TEN. I'm beyind frustrated. Nowhere has the right info to help me get this removed, not even the dealer.

Sorry for the delay- of it doesn't give you the option to clear the my key settings then in means your one key is the my key and that you're missing the admin key unfortunately
same with mine, the dealership quoted me a ridiculous amount to cut a new key. there really should be a way to erase a mykey when you buy used

I have two keys one from Ford and one purchased third-party i paid extra for a folding key w 4 button pad key fob becos i lowkey hate the classic key with keyfob on upperhalf style key that it came with, its just ugly. i have a buick verano with the identical key fob shell/body, just missing the buick logo, paid 200$ a couple years ago for it as a spare key cos ive had accidents locking my only key in the car) and it was programmed to work with my 2013 ford focus se, anyways i end up fooling around one night with the original key and activate mykey (no speed limiter or volume limiter, but i am very over the forced seatbelt requirements or else you get your radio muted😅) and i understand you need an admin key to reset and thats the only way yada yada yada, but the thing is i got the car with one key, i had a 3rd party make me an extra , and neither key appears to be an admin key cos i cant find the settings option, the only reason i hoped one was an admin key is under info it says 1 admin key 1 mykey, but both keys when started say mykey active and dont show the settings. is my 3rd party key like an EXACT clone or something where it somehow reads both keys as if they were they exact same key and it just doesnt show like “2 mykeys (the 2 i have, only showing as 1 bc they are possibly exact copies?) 1 admin (that i never recieved)” or is it possible to be something else like the original keys transponder still being read when i start it with the 3rd party key cos i have both in the car/or in my house and its too close? cos i dont need them both to use the car, i often carry both with me so i can run into a store and leave my car locked and running and run back out and just unlock/hop in, but i also don’t require having both like the original and the spare key have both been carried alone as my only key on me at times, so i just dont know if my 3rd party key is a clone key and the admin key it mentions on start is just the key i never received, or if i am just doing something wrong

This video wasted a lot of my time. Another one told me about the second key, which is the admin key. You have to have the key to reset the settings. You might want to mention that thank you for your video but I needed more help.
Here's a tip If you want to cancel my key settings and it wont let you. Are you using the master key or the spare key ? Master key works instantly. If you only have one key, then keep trying and good luck.

Hey there and sorry for the delay. Yes- thats because your key is the mykey and it can't erase its own restrictions. You need a second key to be made unfortunately to become a new admin key and get the menu option to come up. Or, if you already have a second key, try that one. OK here’s my problem with all of this I was messing with mine and accidentally set the key that was in the ignition to My key , I only have one key so now what do I do? You would think the only key it would make it a admin key so how do I fix this problem?

Hi @mbunny, unfortunately if you lost the admin key you may need to go to the dealer :/ there are some rumors you can trick it back if you have a push button and remote start - do you have a key you insert or a push start?

You will have to go to a ford dealership and buy a key. I had to do this today and I bought a blank to get cut bc they have to order it and it takes a special machine to cut it and you can’t go to the hardware store to cut it. It all has to be done at a ford dealer and they have to program it as well

No because in settings I don't have my key and also doesn't have clear My key, my dad borrowed my car and did some messed up stuff and he doesn't know what he did.
Hey Jennifer- sorry for the confusion here. So your dad must have enabled the MyKey function by accident. When doing this, there's not much warning that the restrictions will be on when you're navigating through the dash. Unfortunately, if you only have one key, the most reliable way to get the restrictions turned off is to go to a dealer and pay for a new key, hire a local locksmith, or there's a third option which is interesting, which is a company called Tom's Key where they will cut a key for you after you send in a picture of your own current restricted key... they'll send you a new key and a programmer and you plug in the programmer and go through their app and connect the new key to your vehicle. Any second key that is programmed with your vehicle is considered an "Admin Key" and it can erase the restrictions on the original key. Does this make sense? I'm working on a Tom's Key video this week and hopefully will have something posted soon if you have some time. In a nutshell, you need any second key, or an "Admin Key" to erase the settings on your current restricted key. The Admin Key will see the MyKey settings in the dash, whereas your current restricted key can not.

Yeah I bought a 2013 Ford Escape with one key deactivate. This is total b*******. I'll never buy another Ford Escape again I try to do the spark plugs it's impossible to get to reach them. Putting in antifreeze! That's impossible to because the spout is in an unreachable area. Then one of the little light bulbs went out on the fog lamp in the front and you literally got to take the whole front fender assembly apart to get to the the light bulb

Hey there- sorry but you actually have that because your key IS the MyKey and you are limited to your menu options. You need a spare key made from a locksmith or a dealer to have admin rights again to reset your existing key to the original non MyKey setting. For the record, I am actively working on an update. Check out "Toms Key" for a to your door service for a new key and it comes with an OBDII programmer to program it to your vehicle. 100% refund guaranteed if it doesn't work. I do my best to make good content and realized that I have a gap here after all the comments which I'm working on. This original video was made to introduce mykey and how to erase if you have both keys. Hope this bit here was helpful to move forward with!
Also, if you have a blade key then you are fairly limited with options with Forscan. If you have a FOB and remote start you can sometimes trick the car into thinking the fob isn't present if you wrap it in foil (Faraday cage) or have somebody walk away with it once the car is started. There are a few good threads on this if you Google mykey and forscan. Good luck
