The Dan Tian is a sea of elixir when translated literally. There are three of these energy centers in the human body. The lower converts jing (essence) into ki (energy). The middle converts ki into shen (spirit). The upper is where shen is used and drives your consciousness. Or at least this is one alchemical explanation of many.
NOTE: Jing is more like congealed energy, which is essentially energy stored in matter itself. Afterall, according to modern physics, matter is just congealed energy. Ki is physical energy of all forms in the Universe, and shen is spiritual energy that drives your spiritual body and consciousness.
Regardless of these old beliefs, the lower dan tian is of focus here. The rotation of the dan tian moves first then the body follows. In other words, the dan tian rotates and the limbs move as a result.
NOTE: Treat the Dan Tian as a non physical energy structure within the physical body.
There is also a sense of the body connection in orbit around the dan tian. If the upper body leans to the left the lower body leans to the right. Relaxation is the key.
NOTE: Do not consciously move the torso around the lower dan tian. Rather, allow it to just happen.
Visualize a ball of energy rotating in the lower dan tian that leads all body motion. In addition, let your body slide on this orb instead of being rigidly affixed.
In the side to side exercise, the dan tian rotation is seen leading the body. In the neutral exercise, look closely at the body and see how it is allowed to freely slip around the lower dan tian.
