I will be taking an Amtrak during my trip! I will be taking one from Sac to San.
There is a combo of transport; bus and train. We will use a bus to get to Emeryville CA to Get on the train at the station there to get back to Sacramento.
However, I am having a hard time locating the bus stop for Amtrak in San Francisco. I read that it is on 555 Mission St. is this accurate? If you are able to help me out with locating this information, I would GREATLY appreciate it. This is my first solo trip and my flight is the same day I’ll be depart back to Sac from San Francisco and would HATE any push backs.
Hi! SF native, want to say thank you for making this video! My long distance girlfriend and some transplant friends of mine would most assuredly find this helpful. One thing I wanted to say since you’d not ridden the GGT busses is that while I’d never ride them in town, they are phenomenal to get across the bridge. I had a commute for a few years that had me going from SF to Santa Rosa, and the busses are clean and super comfortable. Also, because of their commuters, the busses are also extremely safe compared to something like BART or MUNI. GGT is probably the only land-based public transportation system in the Bay that I’d feel comfortable taking a nap on. Just my two cents, great video!

I was looking for a clear and direct video on how to buy tickets for the "Cable Car" and I found your video that is well detailed and very complete about transportation in San Francisco. EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!, especially for those of us who don't live in San Francisco but plan to visit sometime 👍
Btw, we lost our bought tickets because the day that we visited SF, the Cable Car and all transportation were free for the visit of President Biden, they closed the Powell rd 🫤
I visited SF in 2012 near the end of June, at the beginning of the tourist season, with my then girlfriend. We got the 3-day MUNI Pass......I would highly recommend that if you're just visiting only SF for a few days! We didn't use the street cars, but we used it for the electric buses, the MINI subway and, of course, the cabe cars.....it's an excellent value!
I visited and stayed in San Francisco in 2011 and I loved the city. Getting around was so much easier without a car, and not one time I had to rent a car, nor did I call a taxi (Uber was a startup back then). Sadly I destroyed my Clipper Card since coming back home to Florida.
Just what I needed! I live in NYC and no matter what anybody says, I love NYCTA (subway & buses). Out of NYC had used systems in Montreal, Mexico City, and Rome (Italy). Going to SF to catch a cruise and have hours to see as much as I can of the bay area. Everybody talks about the system but only you give us the inside information! Thank you!

I visited SF over 2 weeks ago and Muni puts LA Metro to shame! I was able to get around so easily! My only gripe about SFMTA is that they charge $3(though with free transfers).

You’ve honestly inspired me to take the presidio go shuttle and the ferry... I’ve always wanted to but never done it! When my aunt was still living, I used to visit her in Foster City about once a year. I would go around using SamTrans. To go downtown I would use SamTrans and Caltrain. While downtown I would use the bus and BART.
Going around San Francisco area was easy using those mode of transportation.

Terrific video. Thank you. It answered some of my questions. The only thing I'd like to confirm is that as long as I have the Clipper Card the cash value can be used on BART, MUNI, and the Cable Cars without having to get separate "passes" within Clipper.

@@MarcoAshford 4-5 days is plenty of time to explore and even outside of SF as well. SF is pretty small and you can cover SO much in one day!

The cable car was free for the month of August. I was lucky to got to ride it on a cable car stop.
I live in Los Angeles and I also rely on public transportation but our mass transit is less reliable than Muni and people here mostly drive.
Yeah, I heard it was free in August! I didn't get to ride it then. And oof I heard PT in LA is really tough.

I was in SF a couple of years ago and had relatives tell me don’t get a Clipper Card, use the phone app. But I agree with you that the card can be easier…depending on what you are doing. I’ve heard Uber had been a bit expensive coming from the airport. I’ve taken Bart before with no issues. It was helpful for you to explain how Bart from the airport is additional to the A pass. I know a lot of people complain about public transportation in SF, but coming from an area of the country that has very little, I found it pretty easy to get around.

Diehard Muni Rule of Thumb: The less time you leave for Muni, the more time Muni will take. You may run out your door with wet hair and catch that bus every day for two years. Then, you have a very important date, and once again you run out the door at that last minute and thirty minutes later, still no train. The less time you leave for Muni, the more time Muni will take.

I notice you commented on the long queues at beginning & end of the cable car route & you suggested getting on at Powell & Sacramento. My family and i (4 of us) are going to SF for two full days and going to explore the main tourist areas like the Golden Gate Park, fisherman’s wharf, the sea lions, the gg bridge etc. possibly Chinatown as well. Should we get just muni for these places or clipper? The public transportation seems a bit confusing tbh lol I’m from NJ. also which is safest? I heard fights break out on these trains and busses?! should we avoid the busses and just take streetcars? Idk lol halppp
I try to stick to the larger/faster muni metro (light rail/subway) and walking. Busses if I HAVE to. Clipper Cards = $7.50 discounted Ferry rides to Sausalito! I now see tourists using the muni app so they don’t have to deal with clipper on a quick vacation . Caltrain is just angling for more funding and won’t go away. It’s the only thing that connects the San Francisco peninsula. I Never take BART(guess since I never go to the East Bay). It’s gonna be a while before I ride on anything though.
Yeah I prefer the light rail out of all of them! When it’s not rush hour...those things really aren’t bad and get you to where you need to go in a reasonable amount of time. I should look into that ferry discount

I travel to SFO once a year and have never rented a car. The BART, MUNI and yes the cable cars (try at least once) do a nice job of getting you to the tourist sites. Most stops are within walking distance from your hotel and the 5-day pass makes it so easy to board buses and rail lines.

Thank you so much for thorough break down of SF transportation. I’m planning a week long trip in November. We’ll be staying in San Rafael but plan to spend a lot of time in SF. Would you recommend we drive over to SF and park our car there then use public transportation? Is it safe to park cars in SF? I’ve heard bad things about break ins. Is that common?
I’m from AZ so most people own a car because everything is so spread out. We do have a light rail in some parts of the valley but have metro buses is most parts. The busses can be 45 to 30 minutes apart depending on the stop. Not the most ideal especially in the summer. 🔥

There is a public bus in my city I've never used it. but i have used South Shore to travel from my city to Chicago which is what I'm taking for my trip to get to union station.
Get a paper map, if you’re not familiar with SF. I see so many people trying to navigate slivers of SF (and Paris, and Rome, and etc) on their phones when they have no clear feeling for how the City is laid out. Get a paper map, then use your phone when you have an idea of where you are going, and where that is relative to where you are. For one thing, yeah, the 7 will get you to the Haight, but so will the 6. And so will the 43, the N and others…. If you don’t know how SF is laid out, and you aren’t aware there are often multiple lines going where you are, one or more from where you actually are, you may well be waiting way too long when a block away a lesser known line is going there now.
Thanks so much for this fantastic summary! We are coming to San Francisco from New York in 2 weeks and this was the most informative and clear cut breakdown of SF transport I've seen. We are doing a 9 day trip, so we are definitely getting the 7 day pass as we rely on transportation to go pretty much anywhere in NY (and are used to jumping on and off subways and buses all day long), but I DO have a quick question... if we are going to visit Berkeley/Oakland a couple times and need to take the BART, we can still add money to our 7 Day pass and it will take it off as per usual without messing with the unlimited? It’s just the same thing! You literally just tap your clipper card on the card reader on the bus. The Golden Gate Gate transit bus will get you there from rohnert park.

Of course! You didn’t waste $20 at all! You just show the bus driver your pass on your phone since the clipper card tagger can’t read phone passes yet…they need to hop on it!

Definitely possible! Sf isn’t that big…7x7 mile city
Most people board the north-south cable cars at either terminus, so they leave full. Passengers at stops along the way may not get on. Most people get in line in the morning and end up waiting a long time. I recommend getting in line in mid-afternoon when the lines are much shorter and the cars may not be as crowded.
The north-south lines operate between downtown and Fisherman’s Wharf, a tourist attraction in itself. If all you want is the experience of a ride, try the California Street cable car, which is lesser traveled and has no long lines at each terminus.
Also, I didn’t see anything about SamTrans, which operates buses between San Francisco and San Mateo County to the south.

Made a visit to SF a bit ago and forgot the clipper cards which are, somewhere. But fortunately Apple added Clipper to wallet so all you have to do is select a preload value, I think it’s $5, $10, or $20 and use your regular pay method to load it. Then you’re in business. No stopping at the kiosk or anything, just wave your iPhone over the sensor.
Omg it's about time they implemented that technology!! It didn't exist when I lived there for 4 years!
@@IlanaPinsky When I was living there, clipper was still being tested at a select few stations. you pretty much had to buy separate tickets for everything.

You can buy the 7 day pass for muni but it will only work in San Francisco. Make sure you have cash value on a clipper card to help you get back to the East bay!

I don’t think sfo sells passes since it is technically in San bruno but you can take Bart from sfo into downtown to get your passes at one of the kiosks there.

Hey! If you live in Fremont then the monthly pass won’t work if you’re trying to use it from Fremont to SF and Vice versa. However, it will work at Bart stations within San Francisco so that’s balboa park station to embarcadero station

Hi! Thank you so much for the video! I’m curious, is it technically possible to avoid Bart altogether by getting a Muni day pass and a SamTrans day pass and then using the 297 from SFO? I noticed this would be considerably cheaper but am a little confused!
100% it’s possible! There’s only one type of MUNI pass that includes Bart within SF. SamTrans is mostly for cities in San Mateo county and while it does go through some parts of SF (it’s very limited). If that’s what you prefer to do then go for it!

Great Question! If you do it on the app, you just show it to the bus driver. Unfortunately, the technology on the muni scanners don't work when you touch your phone to it...they need to hop on it!

so i need some clarification, please. we will be visiting sf in april and going on a cruise. so...i have applied for a senior clipper card. now, we want to get a 3 day muni pass each as we will be using bart, cable car, buses, etc. we will use bart to get from sfo airport to downtown (staying at grand hyatt downtown.) so from the video (wonderfully informative, btw) i am guessing i need to get a multi day muni pass AND download some cash on to the clipper card to get from sfo airport and back, correct? now say we want to go to sausalito via ferry. i am assuming this is also on the clipper card or is that including on the muni pass? also, would we be able to download a clipper card to my husband's phone prior to arrival or do we need to wait until we get to sfo and buy the actual physical card? (i should be getting MY card in the mail prior to our trip). thanks so much...
Hi Sheri! You can add a 3 day pass onto your clipper card at a muni kiosk. And yes, you’ll want additional cash value on your card for going back to the airport if you’re taking BART and for the ferry as well. Ferry isn’t apart of MUNI, unfortunately! You can get the card on the clipper card app (it came out after I made this video I believe) or wait in person…whatever your preference is. I personally prefer the physical card because loading passes and money onto the app or online doesn’t process immediately and takes several days for the funds to be available. With loading the physical card in person, you get your passes/funds immediately to use. I’m so happy this video helped and I hope you have the best time visiting!!

Hey! So you can purchase a clipper card at any muni kiosk in Sf. I believe the muni stations are still closed but they also exist in the Bart stations in downtown sf. Bart stations in other Bay Area cities have them in the self serving machines. Just keep in mind that muni only works in SF and not in Oakland. However, if you just add regular cash value through a Bart machine or muni kiosk without pursuing a pass, you can use that money anywhere! But to answer your question, you don’t need to buy a clipper card to get the pass. There’s a regular ticket for the passes if you buy them in person. However, they can be loaded onto a card

Hey! Muni is the cable car, bus lines, light rail and street cars in San Francisco. Clipper is usable for all Bay Area Publix transit
I was born and raised in San Francisco and trust me shang chi fights happen everyday on muni especially in the mission district

Hey! They will need their own. You’re better off taking the F streetcar from the ferry building to fishermen’s wharf because you won’t be near the Powell street car line for the cable car.

Green and orange lines are apart of Bart. And oof that’s a trek. You’re better off taking Caltrain to Santa Clara from sf than Bart as it only goes out to berryessa/north San Jose

No they’re two separate things but they both take clipper card. Just load cash value on it
I have a question. I may have a job next month, but it will be the graveyard shift (11pm-7am). I won't have a vehicle and will need to do public transportation. Is it relatively safe to walk at night around 11pm? Which neighborhoods would you recommend me to live and walk? I know about the Tenderloin, and I plan to avoid that place like the plague.
I recommend the sunset, Richmond, duboce triangle, west portal, Cole valley, neighborhoods near SF state, and pac heights as some really really safe options!

Correct and correct. BART is separate from MUNI.
That being said, there is a special pass for muni that has BART within SF, but it wouldn’t work if you’re going to the airport. Only the Bart stations in sf, so balboa park to embarcadero

I lived in the Bay Area until the age of 15 and then moved to a country in Europe with really reliable public transit nationwide. I'm coming back for the first time in 7 years and, unfortunately, haven't learned how to drive yet (due to lack of necessity). My parents now live in San Jose and live a fifteen min walk from a light rail station. Do you think I should even bother with the light rail there or just go broke taking ubers everywhere? 😅😂 It seems that San Jose transit is so bad it makes SF transit look like the Tokyo train network lmao
I may not be the best person to answer questions about the PT in San Jose unfortunately. If the light rail can at least get to important places for the time being then it could be worth it.

That is correct! As long as you have cash value on it or the MUNI A pass(includes BART)...it will work on almost anything!

Nope! But that is something you can put on a clipper card :) you don’t have to though as there is the paper version

No, you get one transfer ticket within the time limit. All you have to do is show it to the driver, so make sure you hang on to it. When the time limit is up, then you pay for a new fare and can get a new ticket.

@@kydnay I would look into MUNI passes to help with that assuming it's all done in SF. Other wise, cash value on your clipper card will be your best bet if you're traveling from east bay to sf

It depends on your method! It’s still cheaper than getting around New York :)
I’ll tell you what’s really expensive. Getting around by taxi or rideshare. Not just SF, but anywhere. You better have some serious dough if you wanna take that method.
CalTrain won't shut down, they might temporary shut down operations because they are doing this thing called CalMod and are implementing electric poles and lines for electric trains. RIP Diesel Trains by 2022.

What is the best way to get from the airport to Lombard St?
It depends where on Lombard street you’ll be unless you’re talking about the windy part of it. Def take Bart to Powell street for starters. You could take the cable car to the windy part from Powell street, but I don’t think you can bring luggage on the cable car

Muni passes and Clipper cards are different?
Correct! You could put a muni pass on a clipper card but they are indeed different because it can be used to add cash value for other Bay Area public transportation methods

@@IlanaPinsky is it easier to have the muni pass in the clipper? We are 4 in my family, if we use the muni day passes, each of us will have to have the app, correct? But if we get clipper cards for each of us, just one person can load the clippers, add passes, etc, is that correct? We really appreciate your input!
@@marcelababl8183 Everyone needs to have their own clipper card or MUNI app for transportation. If you have small children without phones, you can get the paper passes from the MUNI kiosks in the MUNI stations or downtown bart stations

@@evamaggard do you live in SF? A lot of the stations and stops have ADA ramps and the trains and buses have ramps to allow people with walkers and wheelchairs onto them!

@@evamaggardThen you need to report this to the SFMTA. If they don’t do anything about this, then you need to take it a step further. Because this is an ADA violation.

Unfortuantely, no. Everyone needs their own pass or clipper card
@@IlanaPinsky that's every city. It probably won't work for 10 minutes. As so you won't pass it around. They figure the bus driver isn't going to sit thier for 10 minutes

did you know real sf locals don't pay for the bus? maybe instead of this bs video you make one about how to avoid the sfmta cops who show up on the bus to charge you 300$ for not paying. if you think you are here for your community this is the stuff you should care about
I’ve never ever met a local who doesn’t pay for the bus unless they’re cheating the system. I was literally living there when I made this video and I think it’s common sense about getting slapped with a fine for not paying the bus fare. Play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.

you clearly aren't an sf native nor do you use public transit regularly. I like that you're trying to promote taking bart and muni but you go about it in a way that genuinely makes me want to buy a car. stop making 15 minute videos about things you dont know anything about
I literally lived there for 4 years and didn’t have a car. I relied on public transportation all the time. I’d love to hear how it makes you want to get a car though because I think that is a stupid idea, is just more expensive, and is at risk for break ins. I wouldn’t make a video if I didn’t know what I was talking about and you can literally find this info on their websites too.
Maybe you shouldn’t judge someone before you get to know them.

@@aliciehart4928 So I have been on pretty much most muni bus lines. I think the 91 owl, 23,25,56-58 are the only ones I haven’t rode. I relied heavily on the bus and saw fare inspectors kicking people off left and right from being in the mission, the haight, viz valley, excelsior, and the sunset to name a few. But I’m sure there are definitely some that don’t do anything. I’ve just always seen them enforcing stuff and would at least have fare inspectors checking payment on myself once a week.
