Finally made it down here for the night. Great spot and not another van or camper down here overnight. Waking up it was -1 degrees but beautiful to look from the van out to sea. Bonus was no parking fees!
Waves crashing against the shore is one of the oldest sounds on earth. The same then as it is now. Lovely van. I really hope to have one myself one day

quality video mate. you are totally on my wave length, we have a full vw campervan and try to get away as much as possible. life it to short not to. the memories and places we see with our young girls is brilliant. vw campervans or any brand of campervqn for that matter is one of the best lifestyles you can get into. great video i shall keep tuned. regards colin

I love how you explain what is achievable with a Campervan.. I do the same I travel a lot wild camp either in a tent or the van to get to places late or early to get decent shots. I have just sold my car now as well and exclusily use the campervan, it's great knowing it always stocked and ready to go if you suddenly feel like heading off somewhere..

Thank you for the kind words my friend. I certainly wouldnt be without my campervan now. They are so easy to drive, park, wild camp in. I too love photography but with the wild camping kit, drone and cameras for vlogging its too much to then carry additional cameras, lenses etc. Fair play to you for getting out there and combining the two. Nice video watched a week or so ago, dont want to shell out for a Vdub so went for a Bongo pick it up Saturday, love my wild camping and this will mean I can camp in new places being able to use the van as a base! I took your advice and mine has a full 4'6"" wide bed, rock n roll beds look nice but for two people, no thanks. Thanks for the inspiration.
Flanners _ that's great news buddy. You will absolutely love it 👍. I did 2 nights on a 3/4 bed, that was enough for me!!I'm used to sleeping in odd places but couldn't handle that. Just watching your video now. I absolutely love your van.... so warm and comfy.... and spacious! My friend and I have been camping but we have slept in his car at times. His car is a Ford Mondeo mk 2 estate from 2006. It does get cramped and there is no headspace so it can get quite awkward when settling down for the night. I think he should get a van like yours! A job well done. Basic, yet functional and very well thought out regarding the use of storage space. Subscribed.

It certainly is good to get outdoors. The unit behind the seats certainly works for us. You lose the ability to turn the passenger seat around, but this was a small price to pay. ATB Alister

Enjoyed your video. We had a VW Campmobile when the kids were young. Drove it from Texas to California twice. It was wild camping for us. Then came work and school retired now and trying my hand at camping again. Like to froze in the Davis Mountains. Tell me about your winter gear. Best to you and your winter adventures

Just bought a transporter 2015 , and we live 20 mins from Hayling island ...my partner is from hayling ..
we will have to get down on that beach again soon .

that drone footage was really good, i used to use a quad copter i built with GPS, but too windy here in Scotland to get a lot of use so i sold it.

You should put curtains make it private read the bed like that but a little kid change making nice and warm for rugs make it pretty so you can look at the rain in cook from inside man not outside
Hey Nancy, thank you for watching. Sorry I didnt show you the curtains, there are black out curtains all around the van. I am looking into a mat/rug for the floor to make it warmer in winter. I do inside when the weatehr is bad, but I do love cooking alfresco.... best wishes Alister

Nilz4FR you can pick up these flat pack conversion units at loads of places , just google vw camper van unit / conversion
Great job on the T5 conversion Alistair! I'd love one myself but I'd be too tempted to pack it all in, sell the house and use the proceeds to live on the road :)
It must be a huge comfort knowing that, when you have an experience like you did on Snowdon, you have such a comfortable environment to come back to, where you can quickly get warm & dry.
The toilet must be a bit of a pain though, if you or your partner need to use it during the night, or do you just agree to kick each other outside, pretending your in a tent, lol :))
Hi Martin, Thank you for the positive comment. Watch this space mate as come April next year thats exactly what I am going to do..... and looking forward to it!!! Its a great comfort knowing that I put the kettle on, kick the heater on and get into warm kit withing minutes. Its fantastic, everyone should have one. The toilet isnt an issue as the toilet sits between the bed and the unit so is still accesible with the bed down. It means we dont disturb each other!! :) ATB Alister

Great video had few campers big /small and different layouts but this looks practical and most of all comfy (looks a quality bed they can be uncomfortable rock in roll mattress looks thick on this one ) interested to know if you still got this van or upgraded too bigger van ?
The kitchen unit assembly and fridge is fantastic! Can you buy something like it fully supplied to fit would you know?

Hi Alister just found your channel and very glad I have. Unbelievably out of all the videos I have watched yours is the first with the units placed as they are and it makes sense. I have adapted an IKEA bed sofa that bolts onto the rear D Ring holes and that too is full width so also very comfortable. Only problem though is it doesn't leave enough room to fit those units. So can I ask is yours a SWB or LWB. Its certainly got me thinking about my own conversion again now. Happy travels. Oh and for the record two years ago we had a week end on Hayling Island on a camp site and your option looked far more enjoyable.

Real pain as it’s lovely sleeping in the van in high winds and bit of rain .

Good series of videos. Appreciate your effort. Think it’s the first time I’ve seen a kitchen unit behind the front seats in a VW and it’s great for the bed flexibility. I’ll bear that in mind. Is yours a short wheelbase ?
I’m an enthusiastic landscape photographer and now I’ve got a flat floor in the back of my Range Rover I’ve dispensed with camp sites and tents when I’m solo. Brilliant solution for sunrise and sunset shooting - shoot until it’s dark then move on without need for prior arrangements and no packing up.
Came across your channel because I’m intrigued with upland camping. Although I’ve been camping for 50+ years, I’ve never carried a tent up a hill, or on a walk. What’s holding me back is my lightest tent is a TN Super Quasar which is fantastic, but weighs 9.4 lb, or 4.6 kg. Means my pack is about 36 lb and that seems too heavy for a heavyweight 67 year old. My ambitions are only to climb such as Place Fell and stop the night.
Interesting what you say about the weight of Hilleberg tents. They do weigh in around 3kg and that causes me to wonder whether the weight saving on the Super Quasar is worthwhile when the goal is only such as Place Fell. What do you think ?
Hi Gary, thank you for teh positive comments buddy. You lose teh use of the front seat from the rear but the payoff for having such a big bed is well worth it. Mine is a long wheel base. Isnt it great to have the flexibility to be able to pull up wherever you want to and get a good nights sleep. 36lb to be carrying uphill is alot for any age, let alone 67. Well done you. Maybe its time to look at some of the lightweight kit out there and make your life of walking uphill both more enjoyable and less strenuous. I would imagine the joy of being a landscape photographer is capturing that one image that you have walked too, camped, woke up early and everything is just perfect as you press the shutter button!! Of course you have also had the great pleasure of the overnight stay on the mountainside and a cracking photo!! what a life you have!! If it were me, I think I would defo look at making my pack lighter. The big 4 of the rucksack, tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag is a good place to start making lighter. Also check what you are carrying and leave out anything that you dont use on a regular basis, never leave out emergency kit though. Hope that helps. Good luck, Alister.
Great video mate. Re your layout, I’ve just finished a T5 conversion in the usually style with the cooking and units up the side. I definitely agree having done it that way that your layout is way more flexible. Can I ask bud, where did you buy your unit from? Is it a clear cut one?

Hi Kev, the unit is screwed down to the 12mm ply flooring and the bed is bolted through the chassis and a spreader plate underneath the van. The bed is made by Smart Beds between Weston Super Mare and Bristol. Hope that helps. Alister

They are all quite expensive. I brought the lightweight ply which is about £120 for a sheet of 8 x 4. The thing with making your own units is that you can have it to suit you. Good luck
I am very impressed with your conversion i want to do similar build i love your bed what sort of money did it cost and who supplied it because i have back problems and i need a decent bed any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi David, thanks for watching. Best thing I ever did was buy a van for turning into a camper. Wouldnt be without it now. I didn't take any footage of the build I'm afraid. Wonderful , this is exactly want I want to do - unfortunately I don’t have the man to do it with ! My ex spends all his spare time in the gym hence why were not together as he would never go anywhere on the weekend not even for the day in the car - waste of life and the cause of endless arguments , now am stuck in a rut , on my own with the kids 😞

I need to get a kitchen unit like this made however we have two kids in the back also using the smart bed full width, we would need to rotate the front double seat to face them would their be enough room do you reckon to open the fridge if we moved the unit forward to allow room for our legs.or possibly make a narrower unit
Rhys Holley hi buddy, there is probably about 400mm from the end of the bed to unit. So that’s how much you could move it forward. I don’t think that would be enough room in order to spin the double seat round. I’ve never had a rotating double seat but think they need a fair bit of room to turn them. Rotating the single seat was the one thing I had to sacrifice for this layout. Hope that helps. ATB Alister

Thanks for the response, im just building my van an am using the same layout as yours, could I ask where you house all your 12v electric fuses and leisure battery ?, also your consumer unit,I guess your Webasto is under your passenger seat. Thanks for the info and great vid.
Breezy the leisure battery is housed under the driver seat with the eberspacer heater under the passenger seat. The consumer unit is fitted to the kitchen pod, it faces towards the cab between the drivers and passenger seat. Good luck with the build buddy.
