      I learned this the hard way… the new firmware deleted everything!! I did save all my scenes to a USB drive but the new firmware would not recognize that there was anything on the USB… I ended up having to download Behringer X32 Edit software onto a computer, then upload my saved scenes to it, then export it back to the mixer from the Edit App…. It took me many phone calls and a loong time to figure it out.

    Thank you! I have been frustrated trying to accomplish this very thing. I am using Traction 7 for my DAW and the best I could do was get the DAW mix to play back on 2 channels on the X32. The REC / PLAY feature and the Input settings (along with a tweak in Tracktion) is what will do the trick.
    As you were talking about the Play / Rec option, I was already thinking that I would forget about it and not have any sound for practice on Sunday morning!! Great callout.

    Thank you Allam! I am now using Reaper to record all 32 channel with my M32R console. It works well! My question, some of the track has really low level audio input, my question...if I increase the gain knob (on the console), will it affect to the level chanel on the console (will make the overall level on LR output increase as well). Can I set it separately?
    We have no congregation, so I use the Main LR on MIDAS connected to Video Mixer for streaming.

    • @AllamHouse

      It is on version 4.0 and later. You will find it in the Routing > Input. It is the right-most encoder. ‘Rec’ is for normal service. ‘Play’ is for virtual playback from the computer.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety

      This specific program only allows you to record (that I am aware of). I personally use Presonus StudioOne which is a fully functional DAW and will allow you to pinch in other items. You would save your tracks and then you could run them back through the console and just have a specific mic set to re-record and have your own studio setup.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety +1

      Easiest way to work with the ATEM mini is to route your stream mix to go out AUX 5&6 on the back of the console. Then, get a 1/4” to 1/8” TRS cable and plug in the 1/4” to the console (AUX 5&6) and the 1/8” to your ATEM mini

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety +1

      If you are on V4.0 or later you can use the USER out section to custom build some routing. You can then select this output routing setup on the card section of the routing area. This video here is not the exact answer, but it might point you in the right direction since it deals with a bunch of routing setup. czcams.com/video/Zb6ngDBuaDE/video.html

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 2 lety

      The USB slot on the top of the console (next to the screen) will only record a 2-track. The X-USB slot will allow you to multitrack into a DAW (on a computer) or you could go with the X-Live card which does offer multitracking onboard to the SD slot.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 2 lety

      Yes, the USB slot on top of the console is a standard 2-track recorded and has selectable settings if you hit the view button right next to it. The X-USB card on the back is designed to offer the multitrack capability which could be setup to just do the same as the USB slot on top if desired.

      I believe this can be setup for DAW control, but it is very limited in its capabilities. The X-touch is probably an easier (and less expensive) tool. I’ve heard the WING is a much better DAW controller that is also a full console, but have always done my automation by hand.

    Thank you for the lecture. I am having an issue after recording in logic pro. My logic pro records on AIIF format and i notice when ever i want to play back outside the console, the volume is barely heard, but playing back with the console it works plays normal. Am confused

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I have not spent any time in Logic Pro for recording so I do not have specific answers to offer, but I would start with your gain on the console. Make sure you have a solid gain structure set per input where it shows between -18 and -12dB on the input meter. This should give you a solid signal coming into the DAW to work with on or off the console. Outside of that, I am not familiar with the AIIF format, but if you still have issues you might look to switch to a more standard .WAV file. I don't think the file type should change the playback, but it might be worth looking into. Good luck with the hunt, please let us know what you find out.

    Hey Dave! Tripped across this video; very useful. How did you setup the Main L/R and Stream L/R to be recorded in the DAW? We use Logic and saving the multitracks would be useful for training and developing our sound engineers. Thanks- Jorge

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 2 lety +1

      The first thing to keep in mind is that you can only run 32 tracks across USB so if you are currently recording all 32 inputs you will need to pick a few to not record. I usually go into Routing > Card and set 25-32 as User Outs. Then, in Routing > User > Outputs I set 25-28 to match my inputs and then set 29/30 for Stream Outputs and 31/32 for Main LR output. This will grab those signals and send them into your DAW.

  • @JayBratton31

    Great vid, quick question. Would I have to set all of my faders to Unity in my DAW to get an accurate virtual soundcheck. I already turn off any effects and processing I have in my DAW but I'm worried that the levels I mix in my DAW won't translate when I do virtual soundcheck.
    Ex: record Sunday service for live stream thru DAW.... Come back in middle of week b4 reheand do virtual soundcheck without band... My faders in DAW are different than FOH

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety

      Yes, you want to make sure that the signal that sends your tracks back into the console are at zero. For me (in Presonus StudioOne) I use a Pre-Fader send for each channel that I set at 0 so that the entire signal I received from the console to the DAW will now go back to the console. This allows me to properly set my compression and stream levels knowing that my gain structure is pretty accurate.

      There is a trick using the P-16 channels that (with the correct routing) allows you to send signals into a DAW and include the onboard channel strip from the X32. You are limited to 16 channels at a time, but it might fit your needs. I don’t currently have a video about this, but maybe I can make one soon as this has come up a bit recently.

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 4 lety

      First, Studio One does not come with sample multitracks. You will want to setup to record from your band, or find some in other places online.
      Second, it seems like you are deep into routing and I hope this might help explain it a little bit. You have audio coming in from sources (mics, guitars, etc) and those will get routed on the input tab of the routing page. On this same page, you can have a different setup to play back your tracks from a computer into the board for you to remix. This is separate from any livestream you might be sending through your AUX bus. Then you can page over in the routing page and get to the Card Out section. This is where you need to understand the current goal OR make one situation that could work most of the time. To Record, you need to have your sources mapped to go out 1-32 and you should have an extra 8 that could be mapped to your AUX bus to allow you to record that audio as well. Then, when you playback, you will have to route the recorded AUX bus to some actual faders.
      Tracks Live is the easiest way to setup/capture tracks 1-32. Studio One will be an additional layer of routing to have to learn and coy get way of teach/training

      I was working with a church last night that is using Ableton. I was not as involved with the actual DAW setup, but I did see a few things in the process.
      (1) we had to make sure that the driver was running and it had an address to show connectivity to the X32.
      (2) make sure the X-USB card is selected in the audio card area of the properties.
      (3) setup your tracks and for input choose ‘ext’ and then you should have a drop down for the 32 inputs from the X32. Choose the one you want to map to that channel in your DAW
      (4) do the same thing for the outputs.

      In theory a 50' cable is the limit, but I have never tried going that long. I know they make USB 2.0 with a signal booster, but you might have to look into a converter to go from USB to Cat5 and back to USB (potentially). Good luck

    • @AllamHouse

      1) go to Settings > Card and make sure you are set as 32/32
      2) go to Routing > Card and make sure those settings match Routing > Input
      3) If you are on a newer machine running USB-C and converting with a dongle. Make sure it is either Apple or Anker branded. Other less expensive brands will only convert channels 1/2
      4) go into the settings of Logic an make sure the inputs are mapped properly so the DAW has a place to send all 32 USB inputs from the console.

      The best thing to do is setup to record your band in your normal venue. Pick a rehearsal or a service, click those tracks to record and then just stop the recording at the end of the session. Then push those back through your console. I have stuff from my church, but these would be different than your normal folks so it would be okay to practice with, but not worth saving your work as it will likely be different for your actual band.
      Also, I believe there are options to get multitracks from other sources online, but I have always just recorded my group.

      I’m not really sure I understand the issue fully, but it is hard to say without watching it happen. The console does offer the ability to setup have different input for a channel regardless of the “fader number” that is listed in the order on the board. There is also different routing capabilities within the card outs, card returns, and in a DAW (if you are using that to record). I do offer private consultations in case you would find that helpful. I have the X-USB going to a Mac and I am receiving audio into Tracks Live, but cannot get any signal back to the board when playing back the track. I have the Record set to my AES inputs and the play to Card 1-32. I play the tracks on the play setting on the board and I get no input signal. So I have a question regarding this type of setup. I want to run two DAWs (Ableton running loops and Logic for recording Logic Pro and doing vocal tuning). Yes, I shouldn't do it, *BUT* it's a proof of concept that I've been pondering about for a while. All inputs are local, but Logic returns back the tuned vocals for the audience/house, loops/stems/backing tracks run into the house but are also recorded into Logic. I've been fiddling with the routing settings on the X32 and I can't nail it, I know it's possible, just don't know how. It would be easier on the Mac because I can use something like SoundFlower/BlackHole and route between them, but again it's not so clear.
    Do you have any tips? 😅

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před rokem

      So here are a few things to think about that might adjust your approach.
      1) The console can only attach across USB to one computer to manage inputs/outputs. Most people running a basic Ableton rig will have two outputs (Click and tracks) and send the headphone out of this computer into a stereo DI box which allows them to plug these inputs into regular XLR inputs on the console. You can go more advanced and get a Focusrite interface that offers four outputs or a Moto that offers eight outputs, but that is a more complicated setup.
      2) Using Step 1 as a guide to get click and tracks into the console you now have the USB to run Logic for recording and vocal processing.
      3) Depending on the computer you are using (and its' location in your venue) it may be more efficient to pick one DAW to do everything and go across USB.
      ROUTING SETUP;
      The Basic setup with two DAWs would have your Ableton rig using a DI and coming in like any other input. Your Logic rig using USB. You would utilize the USER INPUTS section to determine which inputs come from a preamp and which come from USB return (vocals). Your CARD tab would send all your inputs to the card. Your DAW would use some version of Sub Outs to determine the routing for getting your vocals back into the console. Keep in ind you Do Not want your main mix in Logic turned up or routed to any output otherwise it could be coming back into your console.
      The Basic setup with one DAW would be similar in that you would use the USER INPUTS to map your desired click, tracks and vocals into the console from the DAW. You would want to make sure that you have your DAW outputs set appropriately for the items going back into the console and confirming your main DAW mix is not sneaking into the console in any way.
      There are a lot of details to get right when setting this up. I have linked a video below that might offer you the concepts to work with but if you want to work together I do offer one-on-one consultations. If you want to explore that route please fill out the contact card on my website at sound.allamhouse.com

      If it is only doing channel 1/2 on playback from the DAW to the console means the DAW is sending only the Main mix back to the console so you need to go into the settings and set your outputs to be individual channels instead of just the main stereo mix.

      If you record on the X-live SD card, it is just like a computer... only onboard. It will record straight off the preamp, but no Armstrong’s are stored with the project. • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před rokem +1

      True gain control is only allocated for the preamp on the console (or stage box). When flipping to a virtual soundcheck across USB or SD card (on the X-Live card) you can use the gain knob and this will impact digital trim. This increase or decrease will be reflected when you go back to the normal setting for live inputs so your efforts will be retained.

      You will treat the SD card similar to the USB recording. Take these steps.
      Recording---
      1) Go to Routing > Card and set 1-8 to be sourced by AuxIn 1-6/TB.
      2) Go to the USB Recorder settings (click the view button next to the USB recorder) and find the option for the recorder source and change from USB to SD
      3) When ready, go to USB Recorder and push the record button
      Playback---
      1) Go to Routing > Inputs and set the AUX In Remap (far right) to Card 1-6.
      2) Go to the USB Recorder and push the play button
      *NOTE: I do not personally have this card installed in my console so I am going off of what I have learned from working on others' consoles. Make sure to test this during a non-production time to make sure you have all of the details worked out.

What I do on MAC is switch my input device to me "Built-In Mic", hit Apply, then go back to the dropdown and X-USB is there (in a new spot in the list) and when I select it tends to work fine. For PC, the only thing I found that was the most consistent (but still not enough for me to call it a fix) was to...
      (1) Disconnect the USB cable
      (2) Power down the console

      This is interesting. In theory, if your inputs are the only thing that change (from REC to PLAY) then everything should work the same. Double check that you are not sending all of your multitracks to the individual input channels and NOT all to input 1/2 of the console.

      Sometimes it is worth a fresh start. You can use the library (on the console) to store your EQ/comp settings for each input. Then Dona reset and get the basic workflow functioning, then reload the settings one at a time and make sure everything continues to work.

    Can it be possible to record while hearing an instrument from the same computer and DAW? For example, if you are doing a voice overdub for a complete done music, is x32 possible to playback and record at the same time?

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety

      Short answer... yes. It will take a little prep work on the routing in and out of your DAW and X32, but it is certainly possible to do it. Be aware that if you are running tracks back through with a bunch of plugins in the DAW, you might experience some latency. You can do it and even can become creative with how you do it for the best result.

      @AllamHouse  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I saw your other comment and just replied to it. I will post the same answer here in case someone has the same question while looking at this video.
      If you have the Behringer X32 you will need to upgrade to the X-Live card which allows for multitrack recording directly to SD cards. If you have the Midas M32 it will come with this card already installed. Outside of those options, you will need to use a DAW to record. If you are just going for a basic record and playback, you might look at Trackslive which is a free download from Waves and it is a very basic DAW that would be a direct replacement for the SD card concept if you need this soon.

      By default it is not designed to record like that, but only pull in RAW tracks. You can become creative and setup some custom routing to record exactly what you want (within limitations). You would end up using a MixBUS and feed it the dry signal and the FX you want and then send that bus out across USB into your DAW. Also, if you are looking to just build a nice mix on the console and then send that to your DAW I have a number of "live Stream" related videos that might give you some ideas. Here are two videos that can help you with routing and board layout.

      The setup will be somewhat unique and I don't have a specific video to point you to for this setup. I usually take the approach of sending all my inputs to a DAW (for multitrack recording) which is the video you watched here. Once those signals are in the DAW you have the ability to manage them in the DAW and then route them back out (across USB) and back to the console. If it is just one input you can get away with just changing the source for that channel, but if it ends up being more than that it is usually best to use the User In settings. To get started though, just select the channel and go to Home > Config and then on the left you can select the card channel that your signal is returning to the console on (from your DAW). I like to keep a one-to-one routing inside the DAW so that channel 13 on my console is channel 13 on USB and channel 13 in the DAW. I hope that helps. If you need specific help feel free to fill out the contact card on my website and we can book a time to chat. sound.allamhouse.com

      The level of a Presonus matters in this case. The free version (Prime) only supports 2 inputs. The Artist and Pro support your 32 tracks. I always recommend Prime for people that are practicing at home when someone else is handling the actual recording, but if you want to record you will need the Artist. Erosion at minimum.

      @AllamHouse  Před 3 lety

      This is a great question and the answer is not an easy one. I will add it to my list of upcoming videos once ai finish my current series.
      Short answer. You have to run inputs through the P16 routing, then send the P16 routing out your card to your DAW. This only allows for 16 channels to be recorded like this so you can gain an additional 12 channels by doing something similar with tour buses. It will remove the functionality of the console to be used as a live mixer, but it will be a usable studio console in this configuration. I hope that makes sense. I’ll start planning for that video response as well.

Or am I completely wrong?

    • @AllamHouse
      @AllamHouse  Před 2 lety

      Unfortunately, it is not automatic. You need to go into Song > Song Setup > Audio I/O and manually do the routing within the matrix window. This video here shows some of the setup matrix window in StudioOne and it might be helpful to you. There is a quick link in the description to jump to the 13:44 mark. You will also need to select your channels in the DAW to go back out the ‘sub group’ which will get it to go out USB and back to the console. If this doesn’t work out, let me know which version of StudioOne you are using and I’ll see if I can make a quick video about it.
