This was a wonderful share. I am now eyeing my 7969 with a jaundiced eye, knowing that my combo of narrow shoulders, stega bust and thick waist means a toile or maybe two. But thanks to your trail blazing I know it is doable. After the toile stage for the serious fabric, I am going to over order and use any spare for lining bags and patchwork. Thank you so much.

Hi Theresa, I have to say that when I saw that this week’s video was a wrap dress, I wasn’t going to watch it. I have a larger bust and in the way back past, I had tried on ready-made crossover garments and I hated them because they didn’t fit right. So I ruled them out - for life. However I watched your video because I always enjoy you and for that reason alone, I watched. I just had to tell you how glad I watched after all! You are so smart and you are an excellent teacher! Your clear instructions on how to alter the pattern was fabulous. I especially liked how you took in the fullness in the neckline and transferred it to the bust dart. This is a problem area for me and I will try this technique. I think I may try the Cashmerette Roseclair Dress someday as Jenny also has lots of tips for fit for curvy sewists. Please keep making videos! 😁💚

I skipped over this video bc I was a young adult in the 1970's, I wore those fashions, enjoyed them but have no desire to go back. Having said that your video was referenced by Stephanie Farrell. Theresa, you've done an excellent job. Your tutorial regarding your pattern adjustments is clear, understandable and an excellent reference. One suggestion. When adding paper for fabric adjustments differing color paper makes it much easier to understand. Wonderful job. Thank you.

I'm grateful to be in London where there are a lot of sewists around, but it's such a big city that it's a good hour/hour and a half to get to any meetups. This is so clever, and a bit mind blowing. I have made this dress before and have a full bust so it gapes a bit. I also have this fabric and would love to make this. I will try and get my head around the FBA. Thanks so much for such a great video.
There are quite a few tutorials out there for creating an FBA without a dart (by creating a dart), if you prefer to see it blog-style. I believe that Helen's Closet has one? I've put a link in the description box to the tutorial for pinching out the excess fabric for the gaping neckline. That assumes there is a dart, though. I really love this fabric for the dress. I've now adjusted it to be more like a straight 'view a', and I'll be sharing a video about that soon. I hope yours works out, if you go for it!

I wish I could have had watched this before I made my version. I needed to make similar adjustments. I actually added a inch onto each diagonal , added a bit to the sleeve tapered around the armscye. I thought I had it right in the muslin but it’s not going to cross over enough. I had no idea that using the same principles would work for a FBA because of the raglan sleeves and angles. My version is sitting unfinished and I am hoping that eventually I will be able to fix it or buy something to wear under it or shrink to fit it. I am going to save this so I can rewatch the adjustment. I think it looks fabulous on you !

These adjustments definitely get easier the more you do them. I just assume that I need an FBA for a pattern, so it's not as disappointing to do one. And then there are the sewing pattern designers who make things with multiple bust cup sizes (Cashmerette, Pattern Scout, Jennifer Lauren Handmade), who do the hard work for you! It's so ridiculous because if I worked in a fabric shop, I'd find the whole thing really funny and totally sympathize. They'd just gone to so much trouble for me, it was too embarrassing!! 😂 Worked out in the end, though. 🤷😉

That's great to hear, thank you! Yes, you can press side darts up or down, and I've heard that pressing them up works better for a fuller bust. It certainly seems to sit well on me, so I often do that if I'm adding a dart or increasing a dart. When a dart is drafted, the part of the dart that sticks out will only press flat in one direction (usually down), but Cashmerette (who draft specifically for a full bust) design theirs to be pressed up. I copied them!
Thank you for this .soò...I have to do bust adjustments on everything..I found how you took excess from.the front neckline useful..I did noticed however how distorted the arm hole became...I always 'true' this to make the armholes look like how it was before I started changing the pattern...are you saying this is not necessary..I do this as I think this was how the pattern wanted the arm hole to.look..bit if it is not necessary I will.not do this anymore
That's an interesting question! This dress has a raglan sleeve, so it's a little bit different. For that adjustment, I was following a tutorial from By Hand London, based on their Hannah Dress, which has a set in sleeve. They don't mention changing the armhole, so I suspect that you don't need to. It will probably fall as it should on your body, once you've removed that excess fabric along the neckline. I'm definitely not an expert, but I'd try without the extra armhole adjustment with a muslin and see what happens!
Thanks Theresa.. basically I always copy the armhole before I do a bust adjustment then I lay the original armhole over the new pattern piece and copy it ...I have had some fantastic results...as a good fit for me is everything ...thats why i make my own clothes....so i must be doing something right ...I do know that on some u tubes they say leave the arm hole but that just seems strange...I think with dressmaking we have to go with what makes sense ... and what works ...thank for your fba tutorial ..as it just confirmed that I am doing it correctly...and may I say...you have s beautiful nature that comes across so well in your videos..❤️.

That's great to hear, thank you! Yes, you can press side darts up or down, and I've heard that pressing them up works better for a fuller bust. It certainly seems to sit well on me, so I often do that if I'm adding a dart or increasing a dart.
When a dart is drafted, the part of the dart that sticks out will only press flat in one direction (usually down), but Cashmerette (who draft specifically for a full bust) design theirs to be pressed up. I copied them!

Thank you for this .soò...I have to do bust adjustments on everything..I found how you took excess from.the front neckline useful..I did noticed however how distorted the arm hole became...I always 'true' this to make the armholes look like how it was before I started changing the pattern...are you saying this is not necessary..I do this as I think this was how the pattern wanted the arm hole to.look..bit if it is not necessary I will.not do this anymore
That's an interesting question! This dress has a raglan sleeve, so it's a little bit different. For that adjustment, I was following a tutorial from By Hand London, based on their Hannah Dress, which has a set in sleeve. They don't mention changing the armhole, so I suspect that you don't need to. It will probably fall as it should on your body, once you've removed that excess fabric along the neckline. I'm definitely not an expert, but I'd try without the extra armhole adjustment with a muslin and see what happens!
Thanks Theresa.. basically I always copy the armhole before I do a bust adjustment then I lay the original armhole over the new pattern piece and copy it ...I have had some fantastic results...as a good fit for me is everything ...thats why i make my own clothes....so i must be doing something right ...I do know that on some u tubes they say leave the arm hole but that just seems strange...I think with dressmaking we have to go with what makes sense ... and what works ...thank for your fba tutorial ..as it just confirmed that I am doing it correctly...and may I say...you have s beautiful nature that comes across so well in your videos..❤️.
