      Yeah it has been proven by psychological studies that people often either display overt sadness or have the paradoxical effect of smiling in disturbing, uncomfortable, or sad situations. Some say it is a self-soothing mechanism. It is very normal and if anything indicates that it has affected him deeply.

      I don't think it is an excuse but I see it as a contributing factor (just like being a survivor of childhood abuse). I was also bullied in school and I didn't do anything like this. Why is it that people respond differently under similar environments? It's the interaction between our genes and our experiences. Scientists believe that an experience can trigger genes to turn on. For example, some people might have certain genes associated with depression but those genes won't turn on (depression won't manifest) until the person experiences something like childhood abuse. Of course, we also need to consider what happens during pregnancy and infancy so it is not just the experiences you are aware of or remember.

      Educator here, I've worked with parents of high schoolers that demonstrate anti-social behavior.
      They don't always know how to reconcile the vision they saw of the child they knew and the red flags they see now. Some do everything they can--counseling, psychiatrists, meds, you name it... EVERYTHING. And still their child manipulates, psychologically abuses, and sometimes even physically abuses the parent. Some parents feel helpless, hopeless, etc.
      We don't know the context here and it would not be wise to assume it. While she could very well have been a parent who got him no help, she could also have been one who tried everything. That's what's so difficult about these shootings, nothing is cut and dry except the outcome and the ease of access to carry it out.
      Mental health interventions are needed, sure. But those don't always save the day, either. We need a strategic and comprehensive plan if we want change.

He said he knew the suspect well and went to school with him everyday whereas the neighbor only heard it from people. People including Jefferey Dahmer and Jim Jones. What this guy was trying to get across is that the shooter exhibited signs of mental unbalance already, but still had access to an assault rifle. Almost every young perpetrator of a mass shooting shares the trait of cruelty to animals. This needs to become a huge red flag, and it needs to be reported. The kid in this interview spoke about ramos' cruelty as if it was a long established pattern of behavior, but obviously no one saw this as a warning sign, and no one reported his abuses of animals. That really makes me sick to my stomach. The police may have failed grievously at this tragedy, but in a way, the community failed itself by ignoring some blatant, horrible signs.

    Being bullied, abused, neglected, going to any kind of trauma or family disfunction does not justify criminal behavior. In every case such as this, there are other factors which contributed to the person's criminal behavior. For example, not much is mentioned on the reason this person was not living with the mother. Again no factors or details on the person's life experience should at all justify his/her criminal actions, but it can give understanding and information to help in addressing other cases to prevent these horrifying tragedies. One of the factors is the different agencies which should be involved; they also need to do a better job, such as the easy ways to acquire weapons.

    • @justbreakingballs
      @justbreakingballs Před rokem

      Why so many comments talking nonsense like "well that's not justified even if" justification has nothing to do with it. You can either try to understand this behaviour that's clearly on the menu of humans or bury your head in the sand and say it's evil or sick or this or that. It is what it is. Brain functioning and social environments can clearly create this situation whether you feel it's justified or not.

What happens after a report? Is treatment mandated or are guardians simply informed of the behavior in the hopes they seek treatment? I guess I mean to ask what sort of interventions are actually available in the case of minors who have not actually committed crimes, but are only behaving abnormally?
