I’m about to buy this, but I’ve heard conflicting reports about its capabilities regarding pour over and aeropress grind types.... is it really not suitable if these are my main methods for brewing?
You might want to try grinding finer to address that sourness. We often star in the 3.0-4.0 range for manual drip brewing, and will adjust based on the recipe and flavor.
Almost all the hand grinders available today use conical burrs, and many are great at grinding even light roasts for espresso. The Kinu M47 or Orphan Espresso Lidos both do well in that regard in our experience.
We will be doing a video on the Phoenix soon! So far our impressions are good, the grind quality matches the original M47 and the build quality is quite good as well.
Most reviewers say that it can go as course as french press grinding, but shines at espresso/V60 ranges. The coarser you go, the more fines you get. This grinder would probably do wonderfully at any range, but for coarse grinding, most reviewers seem to prefer the Commandante C40. James Hoffmann does a great video here: czcams.com/video/dn9OuRl1F3k/video.html
Nice job on this. I liked and subbed. I think this will be my grinder of choice. It's tempting to look at the less-featured, less expensive model but I know I would miss the magnetic collection cup. I see the handle is detachable (as you noted for backpacking). Nice. Is there a detent in it to position it to a particular spot or does it matter if it's different? (And I have arthritis so hoping it will work well if not perfectly level during the whole grind?)
It doesn't matter where it is positioned! And it should still work well for you even if it is not perfectly leveled while you grind. We also have another grinder with the magnetic grinds catch! The 1zpresso J-Max features one as well.
What is the burr COATING made of? Can you get a STAINLESS STEEL burr set - only? Do the ESPRESSO settings produce a grind that will give you CREMA with a NAKED porta-filter?
The coating is made from Titanium Nitride (TiN). No, they do not offer an uncoated burr. There are several factors that go into producing crema, like pressure and freshness of the coffee, but the Kinu will certainly grind plenty fine enough to help build the necessary pressure for espresso extraction.
Not sure that we can say one is "better" than the other. They are both great grinders for different reasons. You can watch our Hand Grinder Comparison video to hear our thoughts on both grinders.
We have not been able to try the Apollo grinder yet, but the M47 compares quite well to the Helor and Comandante. We think it shines best for espresso and drip grinds, with a little bit more muddiness in coarse grinds. Have you seen our Comparison of Premium Hand Grinders? We have lots of thoughts posted there already: prima-coffee.com/learn/article/comparisons/a-comparison-premium-hand-grinders-coffee-and-espresso/32722
I have the Kinu M47 and the Apollo, both are excellent however I prefer the Kinu. The catch cup on the Apollo is threaded which is very secure, but also can easily clog with fine grinds. Static electricity cling seems to affect the Apollo more than the Kinu. The Apollo is slightly louder when grinding as the aluminum body seems to resonate the sound of the burrs as you turn. Lastly, although it is easier to pour beans into the Apollo's hopper, the beans are also more likely to jump out out of the Apollo if you are grinding vigorously.
@@primacoffeeequipment Thank you as always for your fantastically informative and very helpful reviews.... My Question here, as a first time COFFEE GRINDER purchaser and user is: My primary usage will be for V60, Chemex and French Press... I'd say- 90% of useage will be to brew 20 0r less liquid ounces of coffee.... I am hoping to avoid allumium... So, the SS build here interests me... Thank you in advance for your thoughtful answers m
What's the price? $500? The second champion of national Aeropress Championship bought it like he bought his dinner. He beat his competitions even when they're using EK43 or EK43S
It produce a respected amount of fines for pour over but it will not produce that bad taste , am I unhappy with my purchase? Hell no. 18 gram for Espresso shot in 36-42 sec?! 20 gram for V60 in 30 second?! There are things you will be proud to own and use, believe me the Kinu M47 is one of it. Nevertheless its a bit heavy, so expect a new formation of muscles especially around the scapula when grinding while standing, but you can use it as a weapon if needed. That 330$ is painful, but time will heal everything :)
I have a tough decision to purchase a premium hand grinder. Kinu M47, Kinu M47 Phoenix, Comandante C40, Lido 3, and Knock Aergrind. Are you familiar of those products and what's your opinion?
Makes a great grind. BUT it is the messiest, coffee dropping, leaves-grounds-all-over-the-place, grinder I've ever used. For that alone, I'd say give it a pass. Makes too much MESS and is not well designed.
ive tried them all , Quite simply the Greatest manual grinder ever made in my humble opinion.
Love my Kinu. The thing is built like a tank and could double up to be a deadly throwing weapon
I just got one. It will last longer than I will. Heavy but I like solid things that last and work. I will pass it down to my kids someday.
Love the symmetry in your openings

I purchased the Kinu M47 from
Prima Coffee Equipment in December, and LOVE IT!
New intro 👌🏻
Thanks Will!
What setting do you use for drip v60s? I'm having trouble reaching an average. Tried 4.0.0 and 3.5.0. Both sour
You might want to try grinding finer to address that sourness. We often star in the 3.0-4.0 range for manual drip brewing, and will adjust based on the recipe and flavor.
Is there a conical grinder you do recommend for s.o., light roast espresso? Or are flat burrs just your recommendation across the board?
Almost all the hand grinders available today use conical burrs, and many are great at grinding even light roasts for espresso. The Kinu M47 or Orphan Espresso Lidos both do well in that regard in our experience.
Do you have the Kinu m47 Phoenix? Or a review of it? How is stand against the traveler or other grinders at the same level?
We will be doing a video on the Phoenix soon! So far our impressions are good, the grind quality matches the original M47 and the build quality is quite good as well.
Hi. I want to use this grinder to use with my cafetière. Can it do course grinds or do I need to be looking for something else?

Where is this promotion coming from? This is one of the best promotion for coffee manual grinder
Can you do a review on M47 Phoenix? Would love to hear your opinions on that. Thanks
Soon! :)

This or 1zpresso JE plus?
Thats for filter coffee or espresso machine with un Pressurized basket
I own this Kinu M47. Let me tell you it's the best hand grinder.
in comparison with the comandante how is it ? which is better?
Not sure that we can say one is "better" than the other. They are both great grinders for different reasons. You can watch our Hand Grinder Comparison video to hear our thoughts on both grinders.

Is this ideal for larger grinds for FRENCH PRESS coffees?
The Kinu grinders work very well for espresso but not necessarily for coarser grinding such as for the French Press.
the price .... LOL! :)

Is this an advertisement? Are you guys getting paid for this?
We are an online coffee equipment retailer, and this is a video overview for a product we carry.
You didn't really clearly answer to his question 🤨
seriously, what do you think how this works?
