"Little girl" was just slang, like chick (not actually a baby chicken), baby (not actually an infant), honey (not actually sweet bee stuff), mama (not actually your mother) etc.

About the "Little girl" part. A lot of bands use to say that in those days. It's not about a kid girl but about a late teen,early 20' girls. Keep up the good work. Love the videos. On the way to 20k.
The original was "pretty boy" and Morrison even sang that line in concerts.

This isn't even their song. It's a cover from a 1920s German Opera. There's another verse that they chose not to include because they felt it gave the wrong impression of why they were a musical group.

The odd instrument you are hearing on The Alabama Song is called a "marxophone." It's a small zither-like instrument with strings but has a sound similar to a mandolin. It involves strumming the strings as well as playing strips (like keys) that operate hammers on the strings.
As to the song itself, the Alabama Song originated in Germany, which sounds a bit odd of course. It was written in the 1920s and translated to a sort of broken English at the time. Berthold Brecht wrote the lyrics and Kurt Weill composed the music. It was part of a play called "Little Mahagonny" produced in 1927, and the character singing the song is a "working girl" if you take my meaning. That second verse lyric, "Show me the way to the next little girl" was changed by Jim Morrison for the Doors version. Originally, given the play's character of a female call girl, she was calling for "the next little boy," as in her next customer. In 1930, a full opera by Brecht and Weill was produced as "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny" in which the Alabama Song was also used. Even in the largely German language work, the song was always done in the broken English. Last note, Brecht and Weill also wrote the famous "Mack the Knife" that Bobby Darin made so famous with his jazz style recording, very different from it's original version in The Threepenny Opera. If you haven't heard Darin's Mack the Knife, I recommend that added to your list.

Cool! I assumed it was a hammered dulcimer the many years I've listened to The Alabama Song. It was an interesting choice for the Doors to cover.
Light My Fire is a definitive sixties song, when you hear it it puts you right in the sixties mindset. The Doors one of the greatest bands ever!
Sometimes the deeper cuts give you the best feel of what the band is all about.

Silas, since you’re trained in piano and find The Doors keyboards interesting, you’ll like these “Breaking It Down” videos by Doors keyboardist, Ray Manzarek (pronounced “man-Zair-ik”), where Ray demonstrates a few Doors songs on the keyboards (including “Light My Fire”) using his Fender Rhodes Piano Bass & Vox Continental Organ.
Since The Doors didn’t have a bassist Ray played the bass lines on a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass with his left hand while playing the Vox Continental Organ with his right hand.
Manzarek was a Chicago native who began piano lessons at age 7. Growing up on Chicago’s south side, Ray was heavily influenced by Chicago blues and jazz and you can hear that influence in his contributions to The Doors music.

Nobody's gonna tell the story? After "Light My Fire" began to take off, The Doors were booked to appear on "The Ed Sullivan Show", a popular television variety series that, in some ways, broke Elvis, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones in America. CBS Network executives were concerned about the line "Girl, we couldn't get much higher", as there was rampant paranoia at the time about anything that might be construed as a reference to drug use. In a meeting with producers before the show, the band agreed to change it to something generic, like "Girl, we couldn't get much better"...The show goes on, Jim gets to the line, and not only sings the original, but stares straight into the camera, emphasizes the offending word by singing it louder and more pronounced, and yells immediately afterwards. People lost their shit, and the band was forever banned from ever appearing on "Ed Sullivan" again, maybe even CBS...Heh...
The Doors were unusual in that they had no bass player. Ray Manzarak played the base on the organ while simultaneously playing the regular keyboard parts.

I'm pushing 70 years and your enthusiasm and genuine delight over listening to these old gems remind me of how I felt when listening to them for the first time back in the 60's and 70's. Love it that your dad is a HEEPSTER. I bought my first Heep album my senior year of high school in 1970, Bloomfield Indiana. Watch the movie THE DOORS from Oliver Stone Starring Val Kilmer (Iceman). It is not completely accurate, but it gives you a good look and time line for the doors and Jim's life from 66-71.
Opinions are certainly divided about that movie but I love it. Amazing that Val sung all the live Parts.
I think your favorite album by them is going to be “LA Woman”. I could be wrong but I would put a modest amount of money on it
Any time Light My Fire comes on the radio, I always listen to see if it's the full album version or the shorter single version. Always puts me in a better mood if it's the long version

The Doors were banned from the Ed Sullivan show after the were told not to sing the word "higher" during their performance of Light My Fire. They did anyway and it was epic.

I was 12 years old. hanging out at a friends house, they had a Cannabis Joint, we turned on the radio (KLOS) and the DJ said the next song will be very long, so we lit the joint and heard "Light My Fire" for the first time.. I had to buy the album with my own money knowing my parents would not approve of the lyrics in most of the songs on "The Doors". A Life Changing Event.

A great guitarist can kill you with one note, like David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Others have the speed, flash, and tone that pioneered Rock guitar. Morrison was a brilliant lyricist, but some of their biggest hits were written by Guitarist Robbie Krieger including Light My Fire.

I recall one of their home video releases (DVD, with commentary), Ray asked Robbie if he was ever upset if someone assumed Jim wrote Light My Fire. Robbie said no, he only got upset if someone assumed (Jose) Feliciano (jazz guitarist who covered it and went platinum) wrote it.

Ray Mazerek is the keyboard player makes the keyboard sound like a saloon piano or harpsichord. Love Jim Morrison's voice. Bass player is excellent. Love the drums.

When Jim says the lines of "we must find a little girl" in Alabama song or "them little girls understand" in back door man, he's saying that through expression he isn't referring to minors lol. He's expressively referring to just women with an "innocent" connotation to them by calling them little girls. It does catch people off guard when they first hear those lines though
It only catches people off guard if they're so educationally inadequate, so unsocialized, they don't understand the most commonplace American colloquial language. You should never pander to these creatures who advocate censorship - their combination of ignorance and notional superiority makes them utterly dangerous to society at large, vile, horrifying.

Riders on the Storm... The End are my favorite songs from these guys. I wasn't alive when he was.. he died the summer before I was born.. sadly. But these guys and their MUSIC are the soundtrack to a long forgotten struggle.. but I do believe that same struggle is coming to a head in these times... xo

Man, it’s like looking at myself- I guess you’re around 16 or whatever? What’s ironic is that I can almost remember when Morrison died (I was 10), and the older I got, the more it bummed me out that he was gone. I just couldn’t believe how good every album was, seemed like they were playing just for me. I got a kick out of the way you flipped out on Light My Fire- the whole country dug it and it was voted the #1 song of 1967. By far. Keep up the good work, bro. Light my fire was written by their guitarist, Robby Krieger. He wrote their biggest hits like LMF, and Touch Me.
All the instruments used on this album are a drum set, a Gibson SG with an amp, and a keyboard set up with a moog bass key set. 3 musicians and Jim. Any weird noises are keyboard or guitar tricks.
In later albums they hired a bass guitarist from the studio to record a few songs.
Robby Krieger got his first electric guitar about a year before this was recorded. He was a jazz and flamenco acoustic player for a bit before the Doors. Ray Manzarek played piano in a military band and some jazz, and John Densmore was a verified Jazz enthusiast on drums.
Jim Morrison was a rebel, poet and philosopher, possibly all together and unpredictable, partly on stage too incl. scandal.
If you interested see OLIVER STONE's film 1991 with Val Kilmer as Jim; supported by band members Robby and John, heavily criticized by Ray (lack of authenticity).

Ever since Them's Bob Dylan cover It's All Over Know Baby Blue, I've followed Van's voice and have great respect for his 50-year oeuvre.
Depending on my mood, I listen to Van or The Doors - it's great that there is such a great variety of fantastic music!

Jim Morrison's father was a rear admiral in the US Navy and commanded our naval forces in the Gulf of Tonkin "incident." Needless to say, Jim and his father had different lifestyles.
Reminds me of me 30 yrs ago when I sat and listened to this album for the first time.
Light My Fire was a monster hit in 1967. Krieger's guitar solo uses different intervals than you often get on a rock solo, and the verse progression is also very interesting. The initial figure is based on the circle of fifths.
I credit the Doors and specifically Jim Morrison for introducing me to my hippie journey

Alabama Song was written in the 1930's by the German film maker Kurt Weill, sung & made famous by his wife Lotte Lenya. He was Jewish & needed to escape the Nazis so he came to the USA & started working in Hollywood. The music always made me envision a kind of
circus of sin.
Watch their live concerts. They are wild. Jimbo has the greatest stage presents of anyone! Thanks 👍. The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and others did a song called Good Morning Little School Girl. Back Door Man came from Howlin Wolf.

Let's not try to sanitize the great Jim Morrison. When he sang 'Little girl", he meant little girl. Not a five year old, give me a break, but it was the sixties, the pill, the Summer of Love. What do you think that meant? I sang "Alabama Song" in a play written in 1927 by German Playwright Bertolt Brecht before I knew who the Doors were. It's supposed to be sung by a whore in a bar, but we sang it as a bunch of soldiers. There are a lot more verses. After 'little girl' there is little boy and even little goat. Morrison would have known that as did my director and me. I heard this album for the first time at the cast party. I also found out that Jim had recently died. Long Live Jim!!. And the REAL, original Jim, not an updated version.
I figure you may be a college student. That being said what you're doing by listening to the music you're listening to is way more educating than any class you may be taking. 😊

also, as others have mentioned, their catalog is deep considering the short time that they were around. You can also check out the film "No one here gets out alive", and the book by the same name. It's all good stuff. Obviously, Jim Morrison left us way too soon. RIP Jim.
finally, this was a great debut album, but as I have said before, you MUST check out the debut album from Van Halen... you will not be disappointed.

The alabama song instrument is a mandolin.... if its not its a studio trick/effect to make a guitar sound like a mandolin, but, thats what its supposed to be...sonically, its the exactbsame sound as a traditional european mandolin....thats to say its less of an american bluegrass sounding mandolin & more a european classical sounding mandolin, ...as has been mentioned, alabama song is a cover, it a german opera song from the 1930’s

You should definitely react to all the Doors albums, but if not try to react to Morrison Hotel and LA Woman.
Don't worry too much about the "little gals" stuff. Times have changed, yes, but in those days "girls" in their late teens or early twens could be referred to as "little girl" or even "little child" (Beatles) without deliberately wanting to challenge the age of consent. On the Beatles' debut album, Paul McCartney (20 at the time) starts off with "Well she was just seventeen, and you know what I mean...". No one was worried one bit about that back then.

Jim Morrison and John Densmore, the drummer, were known to excessive drug use during performances. It made the guitarist Robby Krieger angry, while Ray Manzarek the keyboardist was just trying to keep everyone together. They were a hot mess, but man where they ever good.

Little girl doesn’t refer to an underage girl in this case. You might notice Led Zeppelin used that term in “since I’ve been loving you” and The Ramones said it in “I wanna be your boyfriend”. It’s probably very foreign to someone as young as you. Just wanted to clear that up since your reaction was quite a disturbed one :) also this song wasn’t even written by The Doors.

@@Grithron2 It's not. It's an old gritty blues cover. Alabama Song was a cover of a of a German inter-war song in which the "little girls," was exchanged for the opposite and it wasn't a euphemism.

Sure "little girl," was a common come on in the late 60's to mid 70's but not in this song.
