- Sir Ernest Shackleton was a pioneer in what is now called the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Underfunded and overambitious, Shackleton set out to cross the entirety of Antarctica via the South Pole by land. In 1914, he assembled a crew of 28 men to tackle the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition aboard the ship, "Endurance", but after six weeks charging through a thousand miles of pack ice on the ship, with a oneday sail left to the starting point for their land crossing, disaster struck. The ice began closing in around the "Endurance", eventually trapping the ship "like an almond in the middle of a chocolate bar," according to one of the men. The men drifted 1,186 miles in the 281 days they were stuck in the ice. "The noise resembles the roar of heavy, distant surf," Shackleton wrote in his log. "Standing on stirring ice, one can imagine it is disturbed by the breathing and tossing of a mighty giant below."
With no hope of rescue, the crew took lifeboats on a five-month journey to Elephant Island. From there, Shackleton took five men and a 22-foot longboat 800 miles across the stormiest stretch of ocean in the world. After 14 days, against all odds, the small crew found South Georgia Island. It took 137 days and several ice-thwarted attempts, but Shackleton eventually returned for his men, and none of the original 28 were lost. "We had reached the naked soul of man," he alleged. "Difficulties are just things to overcome, after all."
Shackelton's story is famous for being an example of the power of strong leadership and the fortitude of the human spirit. For me, however, the story is just as interesting for its allusions to the South Atlantic's raw ocean energy and the surf it surely generates. Shackleton described sailing through waves "50 feet from tip to trough," during his journey to South Georgia Island. I wondered if rideable waves existed along the coasts of these forsaken southern isles, and if there were quality waves, were they even reachable? I wasn't the only one wondering.

bro im on a homemade/homegrown edible and between the cinematography, music and narration, my mind is blown. this is exceptionally well put together. bravo.
Can you appreciate artwork without being high though

Lovely - I was lucky enough to spend a week there a few years ago exploring the islands in an old Landrover - saw some great waves, met lovely people and experienced 4 seasons in one day on more than one occasion.. great spot!
Where abouts is it?
Outstanding doco. Some of these waves were surfed by a group of RAF guys in the mid to late 90's who at the time also thought they were surfing virgin waves :-)
Awesome adventures and short film! I traded in my 5/4, booties, hood & gloves in a long time ago for 365 days of boardshorts. Bravo to you guys for being able to not only surf in that but surf well with all that rubber on. ALOHA
Such a good Film. Love the message behind this, Stay true, stay positive, stay adventuring into the unknown.
I read shackleton's book in 1971 and it's the most fantastic journey against impossible odds for just survival.
I never imagined surfing there that area or the such a fantastic human story about exploration and the things you mentioned about the human spirit that that story would be connected to surfing somehow purely fantastic
Well done. Just finished Endurance and wondered about this area with more swell and wind than just about anywhere in the world...and more unexplored nooks and crannies. Looks like you nailed it with clear skies and sun.
Thanks for showing the one good week a year of good weather in the Falklands.
Great Film! I had just finished the First Successful Surf trip to Patagonia in Argentina in 2006 and tried to organize a Trip to the Falklands myself but since we would be coming from Argentina it became impossible. So glad you all made it! I remember talking to English soldiers in the Falklands on the phone trying to find out as much information about possible Surf.
Makes me proud to be a surfer on so many different levels. Well done.
WOW this is an amazing film!! Footage, storytelling, and editing is on POINT!!
beautiful documentary! I really enjoyed watching it.
Fantastic edit. I'm old enough to remember the war, had not Idea what it even looked like until now. Most excellent.
The shots at the second little slablike peaks we're epic... To have the backdrop of the rocks on the beach and to be able to see the whole linup looked really rad...
I'm from Hawaii and the winter water here makes me shiver
My Roark boonie hat from years ago says, "Trip longer" under the brim. Always took it as psychedelic motivation. After watching this, I realized they also mean to get out there.
Perfect for my country. A finder's gem.
POWERFUL narration!!! Storytelling is what’s missing from 99% of surf films. Great work 🙌🏽
Good stuff guys. Don’t think the Falklands are in danger of becoming crowed!!
no safe havens these days :-(
Was this filmed in the Falklands?
@@vaughnsigal4560 Yes. The mines and mentions of the falklands war give it away
That was sick, kinda didn’t want it to end 🤙
Its not forgotten, this Archipielago use to be part of my home country, Argentina, before the war (1982). For us, will be in our memories for ever. Las Islas Malvinas son Argentinas.
Agustin pochh siempre serán las Malvinas
It didn't belong to Argentina before 82. That war changed nothing. It just got a bunch of people killed.
Vyvyan Basterd yea I know that we were in the wrong, they’ll still be las Malvinas for me tho, and it got a bunch of Argentinians killed, the British whooped us, idk if they had that many casualties
it never belonged to argentina, it has always been british, and the people that live there are british.
It wasnt Britains till Britain claimed it! People were there begore the Brits
Crazy how evident the British influence is in this place. I was almost convinced it was in the Shetlands until I googled Deano’s
Colonialism. Las islas Malvinas son Argentinas
This is the sickest surf film i think i've ever seen. Epic.
So much much more out there too
Great storie and looking lively in the 6mm rubber.
This cold water boy loves this! Thanks.
surfboards are for mortals.
excuse me. I'm immortal and own a few. I don't know If I'm the god, but I'm a god. been diagnosed clinically dead 3 times nothing can kill me. tried to get surgery on my back the aneasthatist couldn't put me to sleep
Jesus its you
Walking on water never gets old.
@@drkside53 i reckon.
Hey man If your real why is the world such a bad place
Editing on this video is phenomenal
Some of the best camera work ive ever seen.
One of the best surf videos that I ever seen. Congrats and keep the adventure!!
One of my all time favorites for sure! Amazing work fellas, stay stoked!!
Outstanding!
Amusing title as there is massive crude oil deposits off South Georgia, maybe that's what the war was about?
Nice surf trip.
Looks like you scored big time! Just rewards for your efforts i reckon, great film👍🤙
Beautiful film. Roark is class.
Man I love these videos. But boy do I love surfing more.
The soundtrack had me waiting for The Forest by The Cure to start playing
J. Montrice you smoke weed
Such a wonderful film, thanks for the upload!!!!!
What is that last tune, it's nose picked right into my head
Awesome adventure, awesome video, awesome soundtrack, everything about this video is just bloody awesome!!
My friend fought in the falkland war. He's a surfer from England. He would certainly rather would have surfed there instead I'm sure
War is terrible. Surfing is pure peace.
Great video of the surf. The narrative was probably also very good but I could hear it under the music track.
Enjoyable watch
Awesome film! Really sparked a sense of adventure
Why can't they put shows like this on television!?????
Amazing. So atmospheric. Loved it!
id be happy and neighborly too if i lived on a chilly version of Mars that had waves.
Ken Hall 😂
Awesome cinematography
After having spent a lifetime going to the "middle of nowhere ", such places truly exist, on multiple continents, and multiple countries, I smile and remember just how great it is to find it and spend time there.#adventurelife.
Wonderful video! Great job, guys!
Thank you all who made and were met in this super lil flick! Would be great to see a tracklist for it too, anyone in the know?
Particularly the tune at 5:00 :D
Stunning visuals and inspiring. Great video. 🖤
Great stuff!! Loved it
Major props
Amazing movie! Wow
Good team of surfers⛄
Great little movie!
So I think this is an awesome story. I love surf adventure stories. I want SURFER journalists to pick up a couple of journalist skills. For example, while this movie features interesting commentary on the human condition, where are we informed about water temp, air temp, wind direction and speed, reef structure and other dangers, gear used, daylight length, offshore storms, wave frequency, time of day, etc. I get it. It starts to resemble work when you have to get real about gathering information. But hey throughout both the article and this movie we're left with the real possibility that these dudes are surfing in 50F air and 60F water and they're just wussies from tropical climes. Also, when you've got both footage and pics of them poring over maps, why not capture some of the jargon. What were they pointing out? Maybe storm location, air pressure, wind speeds, distance the swell must travel. All that stuff is more important to me than the dudes drinking beers or somebody's opinion on what isolation means to the individual psyche. Just saying. Otherwise, keep up the good work.
Couldn't agree more. More storytelling and information on local culture, history and geography. Bruce Brown is still compelling viewing. Staged shots of people pouring over maps or pointing out of shot at a wave are more interesting with context and story
Work it out for yourself. They're not surf guides
@@AstralMystix bingo.
Down at Deano's bar and grill.....Nice....
Infinite potential in the falklands... really... open google earth and check it out. More perfect slab setups and reeling point breaks than almost anywhere take for Indo.
anyone know the name of the music used in this?
Brilliant video well done
Stunning
Great piece
Beautiful.....
Does anyone know how often the Falkland's get clean swell? I always thought that it was really hard to get waves because it was too windy and stormy.
Heard of a few Soldiers Scoring it good there.
That's magnificent !
Soul surf!
