Making videos is oddly confrontational

- Apparently, I'm quite a perfectionist and never quite realised it. So here's to letting go and putting together a somewhat strange experience documenting a weekend alone at my parents' house.

This is so painfully relatable! I'm sitting on so many video clips that I never stitched together into a full length video because I keep thinking they're not good enough. Love that taking inspiration from your grandpa pushed you to overcome some of your reservations 💙
This is so honest, I love it. And I want to incorporate making Angry Dogs into my lifestyle and my channel, what a great way of looking at it!
This video is really well done - you already know how to make aesthetically pleasing imagery, have thoughtful transitions and excellent pacing. Always remember that comparison is the thief of joy - the process of making art (CZcams videos included) is it's own reward. Just have fun with it and you'll keep doing great. :)

I am starting my channel myself, have only posted 2 videos so far. I have tried before and had similar problems but now I decided to simply vlog, almost aimlessly, to practice. I AN HAVING SO MUCH FUN!!! I am also a musician, but with that I am so much more self conscious and perfectionist lol. I have a CZcams music channel with some videos from a few years ago… but that’s it.
Anyways… I thought your video was really lovely and you show so much potential that I can’t wait to see your channel grow! Keep it up!

This is such an honest video and feeling. Thank you for sharing such a real part of not just your life, but creating content to share to the world as well! I can't tell you the amount of hours I've accumulated in videos thinking "I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna post it" and then I tell myself it's sh*t and never post it lol.
This is the first of your videos I've seen, but I really like it and your thoughts on perfection. CZcams needs honest people, who don't try to sell perfect lives, that actually aren't.
That was lovely! And CZcams served it up to me at an interesting time, as I'm relaunching my own channel and I've been struggling with comfort in front of a camera talking and with making my videos work and...all the rest of that. Subscribed, and best wishes! :)

6:49 WOW this is an incredible shot!!! Is the light like this in this room every day? You could literally do a simple video about this room and this lighting. Don't forget some CZcamss made a space for themselves on CZcams by posting 4 to 5-minute videos. Just a day in the life... over one day or over an entire week. Your life in a different country is enough reason to draw my interest. Like what was on that toast? lol.

Loved listening to this video! I saw so much of myself in your battle against perfectionism. I know very well as a writer and illustrator myself the terrible struggle it is to just start something even though you know it probably won't be your best work but you also know that if you don't just start it it'll never get done! I've been working on stepping out of my perfectionism bubble at the start of this year too and just creating for the sake of it without expectation. I've found so far that by doing this I have been creating more than I ever had since childhood. It's so liberating :)

That sums it up so perfectly for me 😂 The fact that your great grandfather wrote a book without intending it to be a book that his own great granddaughter would end up loving is so amazing to me. When it comes to thinking about perfectionism....for me I find that I have to ask myself - Who is my audience? If I think my audience is those who are better than me at a given task, whether it's singing, making videos, writing a book, painting, etc. then likely I will find that I am feeling like an imposter, so to speak....but when I realize that my audience is actually the person I was yesterday - the person who is currently trying to learn what I know and to get to where I currently am - this is freeing. Take for instance talking to a child about tying her shoes. If you know how to tie your shoes and a child asks you for help then you speak from confidence about you know and you feel great after helping that child learn a new skill. The same is true here. Often you will hear that people should "Niche Down" or "Pick a Niche" and although this has some merit - my research suggests it is actually better to pick an audience. The practice of "Designing an avatar" so to speak - where you think about the audience you want to talk to and then get to know that audience - how old are they? What makes them happy? What makes them sad? What do they struggle with? What are their beliefs? Are they married? Do they have children? Have you been where they are? If so, what can you do to help them? Can you make videos that help them laugh? Or help them contemplate their next move? Can you make videos that help them overcome some obstacle or teaches them a skill, or show them a part of the world they want to see. I truly believe that your sincerity shines through - you come accross to me as a REAL person - not someone trying to be something your not - and the fact that you already appear to be this way makes me believe that you have what it takes to build a long term, long lasting, and incredibly successfull channel - if that is what you want! Keep posting - keep being yourself & know that you got this!!

Just want to say, I have an art history degree and angry dog is one of my favorite paintings of all time. I really like your angry dog philosophy (currently doing this with writing a novel) and it is definitely true. Sometimes art is about finishing something and moving on not trying to make a masterpiece.

I'm such a perfectionist and I'm currently in a gap year. I had this big plan to start a youtube channel (I even got to setting up the account and doing some filming) documenting my firdt steps into adulthood. Starting the the summer holidays and working through my first job experience, travel learning new skills for my uni and then going off to uni and continuing through there.
I tried so hard and felt none of it was good enough and now, coming up to the end of my work part of my gap year, I feel I've missed the opportunity to te the story from the beginning?
But this video has made me think maybe I can upload soemthing even if I'm not happy with it? Even if the footage was shot like a year ago, maybe I can still tell my story, even if it's not perfect... maybe I can anyway?
I loved this, it felt so real. Its funny hearing you talk about your comfort book, how it was basically just practice for your great grandfather and him writing about whatever came to his mind; this video is exactly the sort of video that woule become a comfort video for me. Someone talking about real life, being a real person, and being relatable and cozy. I really hope you keep making more videos, I loved this. Angry Dog is a masterpiece to some people 💜
Ahhhhh. That battle between creating something we're proud of and having to practice in getting there someday is a real struggle! Glad you got this out there though. Really enjoyed it. So great that your great grandpa left a book for your comfort read. Imagine what videos would do for future gens if you keep it up!

I totally understand what you are feeling! I'm a new content creator too and it feels really weird to record yourself! I think this is an interesting video and the music you chose is wonderful! I don't have any music in my videos but I'm considering changing it up a little bit. I don't know if it will work with the content I make but we'll see. I'm learning new things every day! It's hard being a perfectionist. Keep doing it! I wanna watch your videos!

I like this. I guess, think about what it is that people have engaged with this video for, more than your other content. Read and re-read these comments here! Figure out who your audience is and just speak to them honestly like you are here.
FWIW your two videos that brought me here were about starting CZcams and just making videos, so now it is time to just iterate on that theme really. Just nice explorations of what it is like to be a creative, with titles and hooks about putting yourself out there in video. Write a script one day, film the next, and edit on the third. Don't get too worried about perfectionism, just tell good stories, pop it out there, then rinse and repeat. :-)
