Did you know Sears had a bike back in the 60's and 70's? Ever heard of a Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub? The answer is probably no, so check out this video where I do a bike check on my Sears 3-speed bike that appears to be dated back to around 1967!
Learn why this bike is important to me, and why it will never leave my bike fleet. If you've ever had a sentimental attachment to something you'll understand. Hopefully you enjoy this type of video, did something a little different with the filming. Let me know below in the comments!

Great vid. Your right. The old bikes got it right. Steel frame for absorbing road shock and also the frame angles were correct. Now there stiff aluminium with derailleur gears to keep you busy. 😊
I have a Fleetwood Sears three speed. I absolutely LOVE it!
Awesome! 🔥
Its actually a shimano 3 speed system. It uses the bell crank instead of a chain pull.
Interesting! Thanks for the insight!
I bought vintage Sears caliper brakes to put on my Montgomery Wards Hawthorn girl's bike because it didn't have rear brakes from the factory. I replaced the Shimano 3-speed single with a dual cable stop then I added another three-speed seat post pulley facing the left side for the brake cable. The brake cable goes up the seat post to a Sunlite single cable stop. Then there is a short piece of brake cable flex and a little longer one for the brake handle. It looks like the Hawthorn factory did it.
I keep all the original parts together. When I first washed it all the green paint, white lettering, and pinstripes came off. It's not original it's painted microflake black cherry red, white pinstripes, and gold leaf lettering, I got a sweetheart 48-tooth sprocket then I swapped out the 155mm crank for a 145mm, twisted chrome fender brackets, banana seat, rechargeable USB type C bullet light, rechargeable smart taillight...
Just bought one at a yard sale. It’s perfect. I’m cleaning it up now
Awesome!
Awesome!
I bought one women's 2 weeks ago for $40.00 in a flea market. Air in tires, seat adjusted and ride excellent, good shifting, just need deep clean and lubrication and replace 2-3 spokes. Still with good air pressure on the tires. My plan is to restore it vintage as-is. Which brand is the 3-speed HUB?
Do you know where I can get a
Replacement Shimano shifter cable for my bike?
Great video. I just purchased a Sears and Roebuck bike very similar to yours.
Awesome!
Hello I just bought a 3 Speed Sears Roebuck I wanted to know how can I find out what the year and model are

Awesome bike. I have about 5 of the same bike.
Sweet!
Update on my Sears 'Free Spirit' 26" 3-speed cruiser: Made by Huffy dated it to late 1970's (1976-78) Complete with 'old school' chrome top caps on the front forks. Original seat in great shape. It was a garbage find all I had to do was put new tires and tubes on it, new brake pads, clean/lube/adjust and she's a great road bike. I've had a lot of compliments on it.
🔥🤘
Great. Who made Sears bikes for them? Thanks
There were a few different companies over the years that manufactured them. There was Murray, Puch, JC Higgins, and a couple others as well depending on the time period.
I have one! I love it! 🤩🤩🤩 My shifter is a bit stiff. What can I do?
Awesome! I can say the shifters on these bikes definitely aren't as smooth as a more modern shifter. I've had mine get a little better after swapping the cable and housing out for some that's not 60 years old, but it definitely is stiffer than my other bikes still.
Found one out by the road in somebody's trash last year. It's a Sears 'Free Spirit' with the three-speed rear hub. In basically good shape except no tires..do you happen to know the tire size? I'm reconditioning it for use primarily because my wife had one many years ago.
Answered my own question: tire size 26" x 1 3/8". Completed the refurbishing put new tires, tubes, and brake pads on it, CLA'd it and it's ready for the road. Very similar to bike in this video except Sears 'Free Spirit' head badge and logos on the frame. Chain guard is chrome with '3 Speed' on it. It's metallic brown color with matching brown fenders with yellow stripes. I'm guessing my example is from mid-1970's. It's a practical, comfy 'around town' bicycle.
Is there a coaster rear brake in that as well as hand brake?
Mine just has hand brakes, no coaster brake.
I have the same bike. Needs a cleaning and tune up. Where can we find sturmey archer 3 speed rebuild kits?. Missing the chain coming out of the hub. Have matching womens 🤓
Sheldon Brown has never done me wrong, looks like they might have some resources to some.

@@YourFavoriteCyclist They CLOSED over a year ago because they couldn't get bikes anymore.
SJS in UK is by far the all round supplier for everything, especially IGH. Prices are a bit high tho and shipping is now in gouging territory.
The hub should have a date stamp that gives the year of manufacture.
That will generally tell you the year the bike was made, although at the beginning of the year they may have been using up last year's order.
True. But that's not the correct hub. Sears made a s/a clone
We actually found the original owners manual for the bike while cleaning out my grandparents house. The bike actually has a Shimano hub on it not a sturmey archer.
I know the rough date of the bike because it's been in the family since new.

I just found a Sears 3-speed light-weight in the thrift store for $29. It has a Shimano hub which is frozen in 2nd gear.
If it's not too hard to free those up and get the other two gears working it would be a pretty good deal. Just needs tires and some cable work.
Can someone link me to a parts website for this bike please
I wish there was a parts website for this bike, it would make things so much easier!
I bought one for 50 $ today from flea market today mine is blue
Awesome!
Just got a red one for my wife yesterday for the same price, funny. Safe travels!
Hipster bike.
👏
First comment lol
Stop trying to talk with your hands You look a fool when it isn't done naturally.
It's like "Oh! they are going to listen better if my arms and hands are flying every kind of which way" W R O N G! It's a distraction, because you are forcing it. Trying to get over on me.
Do yourself a favor and keep your hands locked
