- Andy Griffith's famous 1953 stand-up monologue about college football. It has become one of the most beloved comedy recordings of all time.

When I was growing up in the 60's and 70's, I had no friends, we were poor and no one wanted to be associated with the poor, so I played on my own, but I had Andy and Barney to help me get through the day to day loneliness and I will never forget any of them.
Same here, and I grew up in the 2000’s. Only TV we could afford was on the antenna and we lived in the sticks so all we ever got was an old channel that ran re runs of andy griffith and the like. Never had a dad neither so andy griffith was especially good. Need more good role models like that on tv, especially with TV’s being the parent for most kids anyhow.

GD58, I'll ASSume that you are 5 years younger than me, so we are in the same generation, but I grew up a WORLD away in Vancouver, BC, Canada! I came from an abusive childhood but we try to make the best of what we have, right? BTW, I'll be 71 in just a few days!
I'm 61 yrs old and this lovely man was part of my childhood and my children's childhood...his common sense and decency is sadly lacking from TV and films today..Rest with the Angels.
As is with all so-called "stars" that was his PUBLIC persona!

This truly sums up the one sport I never had any use for and still don't. Adults still playing children's games.

@@mr.blackhawk142 Ice hockey is a grueling sport and I have never attended a game. However, when playing soccer in high school, I was always chosen as the gaurd because of my build.
My father was a huge baseball fan and I, growing up in Portland, OR, used to attend an occasional game there....even occasionally hitch-hiking 30 miles to do so.
However, as I became more interested in astronomy, lost interest in sports, and that is how my life has gone.
On my final day at a school in my 2nd year, I attended in Oregon, the football coach, who was built like a Wazookie Warrier, cornered me on the way out and told me, "Clerk....you're one of the few here who have the build for playing football...either you go out for it next year or I'll personally see you get an "F" in PE. I didn't have the courage to tell him that as soon as I got home we were moving to California, and if he wanted me to play, he'd have to come the 800 miles there and get me...but always wish I had.
I could never understand my complete and total lack of interest in sports...then one day while driving and listening to the radio, the subject came up..one of the guys made the statement.....
"Professional sports are essentially grown men still playing children's games"...YUP, that's it.
Growing up in dark rural skies pf Oregon, I became interested in astronomy at a very early age, but I never saw my first total solar eclipse until I was 39, (1980) took a week off of work (without pay) and drove 1000 miles to do so. Since then I've traveled the world, have been in 19 countries and witnessed my last one from Argentina...my 10th and my Aussie 2'nd wife's 4th.
If you think I'm wealthy....couldn't be farther from the truth and currently drive an 88 Pontiac Fiero 5 speed V6....the only true mid-engine car ever made in the USA. NEVER bought a new car in my life...let someone else take the beating as my 1st wife's uncle often said. New motorcycles? Well, that's another story....but always paid cash. BHE
personnally I think this is pure genius - the comedy of today is crass and mostly vulgar - happy to listen to clean humor, about something that we all can identify with - sorry, but this is my opinion and it comes from a '66 year old male born and raised in the South - so yes, this is Southern humor, but it is beloved by a large cross-section of the population

I'll be 61 soon and I'm often told I don't look like it. In many areas I share the opinions of younger people. But this is a classic. It was one of my dad's favorites. Daddy even sounded like him. Because of daddy I love football and this Andy Griffith sketch is near and dear to my heart. Glad technology has allowed us to preserve it.
My mom (86) was just telling me about "a story Andy told about a football game" - and Voila! here I am, able to share a fond memory with my mom... and these moments are priceless.

Oh, that's great! It's wonderful that you were able to find something your mother remembered from years ago and share it with her! You can find just about ANYTHING on CZcams-- so if your mother has a song she remembers from long ago, or a radio show she used to listen to, or anything else like that, you can probably find it on CZcams. I'm sure you'll be able to find many other fond memories to share with your mother-- and you're right: such moments are priceless.
@@NReese-if1nm YES! My mom passed away about 20 years ago. I recently Googled her name and location 2,500 miles away, and I found a photo of her when she was about 2-3 yrs old with her little dog! It was in the 1930s Windsor Star archives. I also found a photo of her father whom I'm named after! I only have 2 brothers left of our family, but we are estranged so that was so cool to find those relics!
Listening to Andy Griffith reminds me so much of my grandmother and uncle. I am from North Carolina, and his mannerisms and story telling is so much like how they would tell a story.

100% agreed. He played it up a *teensie* bit just to be charmin', but yep you're right, that's the way those folks used to talk. The word "tote" is especially bright in my recollection as being my grandpa's favorite way to say "carry." He reminds me of my grandparents, too. They talked slower, they lived slower, and they're fading in my happiest childhood memories slower, too.
Agreed. My grandma and grandpa were from Haywood County and when I listen to him I feel like a little part of them is still alive somehow. Helps to remember them. ❤
in 1954 my friend and I were in a talent contest at school. My friend won first place at that contest telling Andy Griffith jokes about the football game and I won third place singing, we then went on to the county wide event and once again my friend won first place and I came in third and this allowed us to be on local T. V. Boy was we on cloud nine ! I will carry those memories in my heart and mind for the rest of my life,

I haven't heard this since I was a kid, almost 55 years ago now. Somewhere in me, I always remembered it though. I google the title and some classics will never die, like Andy Griffith!

@@carlaaustin7223 Yes. Andy was born in Mount Airy, NC and went to school in Chapel Hill. Mount Airy is the model for Mayberry, and Pilot Mountain (which is a short distance away from Mount Airy) was the model for Mount Pilot.

Listening to this brings a smile ,although my heart is sad, he meant the world to all us from NC, and I'm sure the rest of the country too..
I first heard this in the Mid-70s sometime as a youth and thought it was funny then... I burst into laughter hearing it today.... Andy was a classic entertainer- an absolute natural.
We had the 45 back in 62, and I wore my mother out asking her to play it over...and over...and over!!! I was 6, but all of Andy's stuff was a tickler to me!!
I remember hearing him when I was young. He was one of the few my mom would let me hear, because he didn't cuss or do adult themed comedy. Plus, she was from NC, and thought he was 'dreamy' handsome, as she would say.
We had the LP. I believe it was called No Time For Sergeants. I played it over and over again. There was also a folksy retelling of Romeo & Juliet and the opera Carmen.
My uncle had it in his collection and I heard it when I was 17 circa 1970. I rolled on the floor laughing. My uncle was in the room. He made the dry comment that apparently I enjoyed the story.
Tears of joy, sadness, and hilarity...Thank you, Andy! You were truly one of a kind.

Rest in Peace Andy. You were my favorite actor of all time and just yesterday I finished watching your 249th episode of The Andy Griffith Show.
My dad played this for me when I was a kid, one of those memories that will never go away, I lost my dad to covid 2 years ago, the loss of your, especially for a man, really fkn hurts. But I think about our memories, music he would play, and comic records, that maybe when I was a kid I didn't appreciate, but when I listen to them now I can feel my pops with me. This is 100% one of the recordings. I'm super grateful for sites like CZcams, and streaming services so I can have that feeling.
This and No time for sergeants where two of my favorite "Watch an old movie with my dad" Saturday activities. I will miss Andy.

I was 14 yo when I first heard Andy give this recital over WLW Cincinnati, Ohio Remember laughing my sox off at it. Just had to go out and buy a copy of the recording.
I heard this and another of his pieces. I was living in South Texas on the Mexico border at the time and was having trouble getting my Sunday school students to listen to my lessons. Being from the South I decided to make my accent work for me and began to tell my Bible stories like this. Worked wonderfully!!! They would hang on every word!!

Beverly Hillbillies had a great episode segment about football. Granny thought the referees were wearing pajamas, IIRC. She had a unique take on what she thought she was seeing. Its possible that this Andy Griffith record was the inspiration for that Beverly Hillbillies bit.
Possibly. I believe it is more of a motif: urban antics viewed through the eyes of country "wisdom". Often funny, frequently insightful.

This was one of my favorite 45 rpm records when I was 7 years old. Was cleaning out my mothers house for an estate sale last week and came across the record in a box of things she had kept. Didn't have a record player to play it, so I looked it up on here.

I wish I had the opprotunity to meet Mr. Griffith. I would let him know that his home-spun wisdom and big heart has reminded me of my Dad ( 9/1923 to 9/2010 ). This was one of the first comedy recordings that I remember. I wish I could whoop-up some catfish & taters for the both of us sometime. Mr. Griffith.....you are one of the last of the wholesome commedian's left! God Bless you & yours Mr. Griffith. And thank you again for a wonderful education on life. Richard D. Bellingham,WA.

Talented people like Andy Griffith make you think. They tell stories that just seem to make you feel good. REAL GOOOOOOOOD! As Andy might say.

I've never heard Andy Griffith do stand up comedy. He's funny. I enjoyed watching him on Andy Griffith show but never heard him outside of the show. He's truly funny.

I grew up listening to and watching the Andy Griffith Show. I was very sad when Don Knotts died and am now very sad that Andy Griffith has. This was/is America but that's life. They live still. I love watching their movies and always will.

I first heard this on a late-night radio show many years ago (and many years after it was recorded, although I didn't know that). I thought it was funny as hell and always wondered who did it. It stuck in my mind over the years, and a few days ago, I decided to see if I could find it-- and by damn, here it was on CZcams!!!
Passed it along to a friend of mine, who thought it was a scream, and said that her mother (who hated football) would have loved it.

This is classic. According to Ron Howard in his book "The Boys" this monologue "catapulted Andy into a career on radio and Broadway". Andy Griffith is a national treasure.
