Ace Analyst: Would MLP G5 Been Better as Sequel or Reboot?

  • With all the problems that audiences have noticed with the transition from G4 to G5, it made wonder if the current generation of MLP would have been better as reboot rather than a sequel. Stay tuned to see if a reboot would have made the show a much better product or if things would stay relatively the same.

    Would I like the G5 if it wasn't in any way related to G4 and was it's own universe?
    Absolutely.
    My major gripe with G5 is that it's built on the back of a popular setting that had to be DESTROYED for it to exist, and whatever wasn't destroyed isn't even used. Had the new series been on its own I would've been much more forgiving. Opaline's plan from the comic would've actually made sense then, as it cannot work in G4 continuation because the School of Friendship exists as a countermeasure to prevent such things from ever happening.
    Mind you, fixing infantile writing is another matter though.

    G5 is majorly messed up. The big wigs keep doing whatever they want at the expense of G4 fans. It boils down to Hasbro's problem with wanting an easy buck.

    In early leaks of G5 there was a story about a tree and each branch was a different world. One for earth ponies, one for pegasi, one for unicorns etc. And the main ponies would meet in the middle

      The "Core" World had dragons & the other "everycreatures"; with the implication that Earth Ponies came from it & populated the other 3 Worlds (evolving into unicorns & pegasi or remaining the same), while becoming ectinct on Core.

    I don't care for the G5, to me it's an alternate time line, neither a sequel or a reboot. The story line is a mess and confusing. Also it made the main character Twilight Sparkle out like a screw up; when she was smart and organized. She knew how to solve problems by using the strengths and skills of her friends.

    The connection to G4 raises so many questions that the writers just aren't really willing to answer. Or if they do, it's done in a way that feels unsatisfactory. It could have worked, if it felt like they actually cared about the fact the two are in the same universe, but it doesn't seem like they do.

    G5 could've also been an alternate universe sort of akin to equestria girls, so it could still be its own thing while reusing g4 characters but changed like that universe twilight could be a skater bro or something.

    If I was to write Generation 5, I would CENSOR or BAN any mentions to previous generations. Here's how:
    1. Equestria will be renamed into "Equinia", affecting the dialogue.
    2. The intro of ANG showing the Mane 6 will have them replaced with generic but similar ponies. The woodcarvings get the same treatment.
    3. The Wonderbolts poster will be replaced with a generic air force poster.
    4. In "Danger, Danger", a scene will depict the Generation 1 cartoon on TVs for a second before changing to Sprout. I will instead replace it with a generic cartoon.
    5. In Make Your Mark, Twilight will be replaced by a generic alicorn known simply as "Prophet Salvation". This also affects the dialogue.
    6. Posey will be renamed into "Marigold", also affecting the dialogue.
    7. The band "Dreamlands", which has resemblances to G1 characters, will be replaced entirely with a generic rock band called "T.R.A.U.M.". Dialogue will also be affected.
    8. Opaline's flashback will have Celestia & Luna replaced with generic alicorn fillies.

      Even Lauren Faust had to use G3 names for her character (she wanted G1 names). The reason is simple: trademarks. Hasbro has to use them is SOME capacity: either name new characters same as prev gen characters, or show prev gen character in a flashback.

    • @AlexandraPlotnikova1
      @AlexandraPlotnikova1 Před 11 měsíci +4

      But Lauren Faust used image and names from G1 and G3 to create the Mane Six.
      Twilight Sparkle is Twilight from G1 and Twilight Twinkle from G3
      Applejack is Applejack from G1 and G3
      Fluttershy is Posey from G1 and Fluttershy from G3
      Rarity is Glory and Sparkler from G1 and Rarity from G3
      Pinkie Pie is Surprise from G1 and Pinkie Pie from G3
      Rainbow Dash is Firefly from G1 and Rainbow Dash from G3.
      Creators of My Little Pony can use past characters to reboot them in future generations or create new ones

    Everything about G5 makes it seem like it was originally intended to be a reboot, but then the connection to G4 was tacked on at the last second as a marketing gimmick, and now the G5 writers are being purposefully vague about what went down after "The Last Problem" because they know as well as us that there's no logical explanation that won't make Twilight and friends look like colossal screwups. It feels like they can't decide whether they want to pander to G4 fans or leave them behind to focus on a younger audience.

    I have one thing about G5 which kinda pisses me off. That tree scene in Chapter 2 at the end where Sparky touches it and his horns start glowing and then Hitch takes him away. I thought they were going to expand on that in the next episode but noooooooooo they just left it like it was nothing. They completely forget about it

    Honestly theirs not really any debate.
    Of course it be better as a reboot, even if many might be disappointed, it just does the same mistakes many other shows do to cash in with the older Hits by making them canon.
    Shows Robots in disguise and prime for example.
    It’s all a good concept but one things for sure, the people behind it Will Never execute it well cause having it make sense with the continuity is less of their goal than just attract fans

    IT SHOULD have been its OWN THING! Tieing it to G4, a 10 year long series that alot of us grew up with, is just PAINFUL to think this show takes place in the same universe. G4 was ALOT more mature with its writing, episodes and themes, while still keeping it kid friendly. Not to mention it HAD WORLD BUILDING that made sense! The connections to G4 are superficial at best, they are REFERENCES rather then actually keeping with the established lore. (a bit of low hanging fruit but Twilight not being FULL GROWN in her message, she looks like she did before she became "Queen").
    Not to mention their are ALOT of questions left unanswered, like oh i don't know "Where did everybody go?" The Changelings, the Dragons, everyone, WHERE ARE THEY?! And now that they have brought UP Celestia and Luna, it makes you start thinking if they are still alive. They would have to be if Opaline is still alive, but they are probably never going to show up again.
    Not to mention the COMICS for this Generation seem ALOT more interesting then the SHOW does.

    Personally, I think G5’s biggest mistake was trying to make a sequel that feels more like it could’ve been a reboot. I think the sequel could’ve still been good, but it is also clear that the current creators didn’t do enough research on G4, which is where the problem comes to play.
    If I want to be completely honest, they should’ve either stuck with the reboot, or at least done their research on G4 or even asked Laura Faust or any previous creator for pointers before making Make Your Mark.

    How about decidedly one or the other? More often than not, they seem to be doing their own thing (which is fine). Yet, they keep trying to tie it to the past (great, if you are willing to attempt some semblance of maintaining continuity). This "half way semi-reboot, but in the future" thing just creates awkward questions.

  • @oldman5247

    As a sequel to G4; the show is awful. It does very little to expand or make the storyline of the previous series better. It would’ve been less irritating with the problems it has on it own merits/dis merits. If it was just a reboot of The My Little Pony brand.

    • @badoomching
      @badoomching Před 11 měsíci +3

      People who watch g5 try and convince others that it doesn’t -technically- contradict things in the show but just cuz it technically doesn’t, it doesn’t mean it’s not awkward as heck if we try to integrate it into the original G4 show. Heck opaline being an edgy Alicorn who use to know Celestia and Luna reminds me of Mary Sue ocs coming up with a backstory, especially the different elements each Alicorn possesses

    I feel G5 should have been a reboot, because as a sequel with how it is written, it makes it feel like the Star Wars sequel trilogy, where the actions of the old heroes are undone and made to look useless and incompetant so the newer, better characters can fix them and be the "bestest there ever was".

    @RiosSumari Před 11 měsíci +5

    Excellent points all, and if Gen 5 had just been Tell you Tale and the movie, I would've loved it. But sadly Make your Mark continues to drag the series down towards failure. It needs to stop trying to reconnect to Gen 4 so hard.

  • @yondaime500
    @yondaime500 Před 11 měsíci +2

    I think it would have been better if they just picked a lane. Either commit to a sequel like The Legend of Korra, where the world is changed but still recognizable and we're not constantly wondering what the hell happened, or make a full reboot like FiM itself, where the previous generations never happened and are only brought up as pop culture references now and then.
    That said, I think the weak storytelling bothers me more than it being or not being a sequel, or the lore being inconsistent (G4 lore was never that consistent to begin with). Other than Misty, the characters feel kind of aimless and boring.

  • @ManaAdvent
    @ManaAdvent Před 11 měsíci +9

    Should've been a separate series/universe with no connection to G4 at all as it feels like it undone everything that previous gen accomplished and feels like an insult, pissing on its grave. It's quite telling that the only thing about G5 that interested me were the concept arts and how it was suppose to be a separate entity before executive meddling came in to make it an awful cash grab.

    Would have been better if they stuck with the G4 format of writing. G5 writing is so juvenile,Netflix is refocusing MLP towards its originally intended audience ( actually a little younger ). They would've been more successful if they kept the same formula, especially if they used a similar style of flash animation.

    Honestly, the show could have worked better as a reboot. I still like G5 for what it is, but it still needs improvement. Though, the one thing I'm glad they didn't do was bring back Twilight and her friends. I know there are some people who want them back, but what the hell is left for the Mane 6 to do? They've done their jobs already, there's no point in bringing them back.

  • @nebulastar9050
    @nebulastar9050 Před 11 měsíci +1

    Really the sequel format would have been fine if the writers had actually known even a little G4 lore... It's pretty obvious that they were told they had to connect the G5 story to G4 so they just looked up a few names and places without putting much effort into it. Really, I liked the movie, but then it only had little references to G4, and it was implied that it was far enough in the future that the division of the tribes didn't bother me that much. A lot can happen in a thousand years after all. It was when the series got going and they started really trying to force a connection between the two that the overall story went downhill. Especially with the introduction of Opaline and the implication that she was somehow able to best Twilight. Twilight! Who had stood up to the likes of Nightmare Moon, Discord, Tirek, and Sombra. Heck, even Cozy Glow was a more threatening villain than her, and we're supposed to believe that this goofy alicorn somehow bested Twilight and tore down everything she'd worked for?
    Opaline would have worked so much better if she had no connection at all to the G4 characters and was just an alicorn that thought being the only alicorn meant that she should be the ruler. If they wanted to connect the two series, they could have still had some things come back from G4; maybe have them discover some of the other races of the world living off on their own like the pony tribes; or perhaps find some ruins of a known G4 location, but the important thing would have been to keep it as the distant past. Because that's the other problem with them trying to connect Opaline to Twilight, it makes it seem like G4 wasn't all that long ago, which just makes it all the more difficult to believe that everything could have fallen apart.

    Before I watched the video itself, I'll answer the question that the title of the video presents. G5 is a reboot whether or not it's listed as a sequel. Every generation of MLP after G1 is a reboot. That even includes the direct SEQUEL to G1, My Little Pony Tales (colloquially referred to as G2). Genation 2 of MLP technically only exists in the toys and doesn't have a correlating TV series. But MLPT is still a reboot by definition. For example, when Doctor Who was rebooted in 2005, did they start from the beginning with a remake of the 1st Doctor, or did they continue where they lfet off with a modern coat of paint? The answer is the latter. Classic Who was never retconned to make way for NuWho. But NuWho is still a reboot. A reboot can in fact take the form of a sequel.
    But I suppose the question you're intending to propose is whether G5 would've been better as a sequel or a completely new timeline. And the fact is that there is no objective answer.
    The 3 races fearing each other being a disregard of what Twilight and the others fought for in G4 doesn't change the fact that times change. G5 takes place in a different era from G4. And the reality is that Twilight didn't fight for peace in Equestria, she grew up in an era of peace. Sure, Twilight fought to unite Equestria even further. But she never WASN'T in a time of peace.
    You do realize that G4 took place in an era where technology was on the rise, right? One of the first examples of this was in Feeling Pinkie Keen with the computer in Twilight's basement. Throughout the series, we see other things like movie theaters, arcade cabinets, digital displays, and everything in Las Pegasus. And depending on how long G5 takes place after G4, technology took far too slow to progress considering where it was in G4.
    How did Argile get a hold of the Earth Pony gem? I don't know. How did Queen Haven get a hold of the Pegasus gem? How did the pony who lost to Alphabittle get a hold of the Unicorn gem? Argile having the Earth Pony gem isn't a plot hole unless you're willing to question the holders of the other two gems. If Argile having the Earth Pony gem is a plot hole, then G4 is Swiss Cheese with how many plot holes it has. And ironically, G5 has filled some of those "plot holes" in G4. Based on your interpretation of a plot hole, then the entirety of media is swiss cheese. How does the Force work in Star Wars? What planet/universe is Beerus from in Dragon Ball? Why did the phoenix only give 2 feathers for wands in Harry Potter? What is the Genie's actual name in Aladin? How well does Charlie do as a Willy Wonka's successor in Willy Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? And to hit home, who are Celestia an Luna's parents?
    G4 was only "minimalistic" in its technology only if you assume technology would've progressed the same way in Equestria as it would the real world. That's fallacious reasoning that far too many people fall into. It's only minimalistic in the sense that there's not a lot. But what little technology that is shown suggest that technology could be the equivalent of the 1980's.
    If G5 wasn't a sequel to G4, there's be no reason to include the existence of Alicorns in G5 in the first place, so your backstory for Opaline is meaningless. The original concept for Alicorns weren't even as a separate race. Originally in G4, they were just Winged Unicorns. This is demonstrated in the very beginning of the show when the book refers to Celestia as using UNICORN magic. The term "Alicorn" is a fan-given name that the show adopted. And it wasn't even used to refer to the Princesses until Season 4, since the first use of Alicorn in Season 3 was in reference to the Alicorn Amulet. In the real world, Alicorn is a term used to refer to the material a Unicorn's horn is made of.
    In your alternate non-sequel scenario, why not have the message still come from Twilight Sparkle? It'd be far from the first time a generation used a character from a previous generation. The Mane 6 of G4 is entirely ripped from previous generations. The only exceptions are Twilight, who's still based on a G1 character. And Fluttershy is who's also based on the G1 character, Posey. Pinkie Pie was originally from G3, but was supposed to be Surprise from G1. Applejack is almost a strait rip from G1. Rarity perhaps has the largest transformation, but is from G3, and given G3 Rainbow Dash's personality. And Rainbow Dash is Firefly from G1. But because of legal reasons, she couldn't use Firefly, so she took the character and gave her G3 Rainbow Dash's name and coat of paint.
    My Little Pony Tales didn't have a Spike. And not all generations of Spike are the same. Though I do agree that Sparky should've been Spike. Perhaps a descendant of the Spike that we all know and...yeah, Spike isn't one of the most loved characters, is he? Although that's only when Spike has episodes focused on him. He's great as a secondary character.
    Your final conclusion isn't that bad though, saying that there wouldn't be much of a difference. But the question of whether or not it would've been better will always result in a subjective answer. So your answer only applies to you, just like my arguments only really apply to me (except for my points about technology in G4).
