      It gave characters more diversity and identity. Yoshimitsu in tk3 is also 8 frame since he is a poke character with short range. Jin has stronger jabs but 10 frame. Kuma was exception with 8 frames and long range! Jumping to tekken 7 i dropped yoshimitsu cause he feels extreme slow and switched to female characters since their movement is atleast decent.

      Jab on block gives you 1+ frame.. so they can't try to interrupt you on your next move.. but if some characters still had 8 frame jabs then you'd even hesitate build jab pressure because their jab will come out faster than yours after they've blocked.. despite 1+ frame

    He also has the least health in the game.

    Paul was in the 100-tier along with Xiao and most of the roster.

    TTT1 Paul clean hit on d+4,2, reminds me something about Jin in T3.
    Somebody remember about Jin 1,2 and b+1,2 ? Mysteriously the second one did more dmg despite are also the same string, animation and attributes, and ofc isn't listed on movelist.

    • @MrOoh50
      @MrOoh50 Před 5 lety +1

      @@mshklh2099 Yes but i was wrong a bit, i will explain (if someone find it wrong tell me). T3 Jin's 1 is weaker than b+1, if i remember correctly it add 4 dmg and also the dmg buff works in every strings that start with left punch. T3 Damage scaling is weird like TTT1 ones. It's hard to say without a visual reference, but the dmg scaling is influenced by distance and char facing angles, jab at max range often do 80% or something that it base dmg ,also some idle stance of some char like Eddy or Lei make things even worse and inconsistent, more or less point blank distance or less than 1 dash hit result in a clean hit.
      You can find out another examples in the game, that make me think that is not only inconsistent but also bugged :
      Ex.
      Paul's 1 (pointblank range) = 6dmg (120%),
      Paul's f+1 (pointblank range) = 7dmg (116%).

    • @djmj1000
      @djmj1000 Před 3 lety +1

      @@MrOoh50 i can confirm things like this. Usually some left punches were faster but had lower range. Also you could often do a 3 kick with 3+4 instead for damage boost. This way law has a 45dmg WS kick! Depending on distance and speed you could get a 45 dmg electric of jin without counter hit! The distance aproach gives the game some realism since a move is weaker if you hit somone only with the tip of your toe. Yoshimitsu fubuki knee at max range did not knock down. But at perfect long range and counter hit it gave a free flash. Here some secrets: czcams.com/video/o18Fsfccrgg/video.html

Also you need to add to his power, his reversal-attack option. not many knows and can buffer a counter to reversal-attack (chicken LUL). its the ultimate block skill. not many had, him, Jin, nina, anna - as i recall now. Well, at one point SFxT Paul was ranked A tier by Justin Wong, so even at worst he was nowhere this trash. Although, it did always bother me that he had no command grab despite being ostensibly a Judo character.
      Though it's not like Paul's throw game ever mattered in regular Tekken either, so I guess Ono was just being faithful to the source material. Paul is by far the least authentic Judo character in fighting games, especially compared to Virtua Fighter's Goh Hinogami.

    • @davidparry5310
      @davidparry5310 Před 4 lety +7

      @@Rangaisia To be fair, I don't think he's meant to be a pure Judo character, just a character whose moveset draws upon Judo to an extent. Also, his range of command grabs is above average for a Tekken character, and the command grabs he has are pretty good.

    Did you also know that Heihachi has Death fist as well in the legacy games? Why ever pick Paul over Heihachi? Especially in this game when blocking low sweeps would stagger, and the range is an issue too, I love Mainman's character review episodes we need more stuff like this in every community not just Tekken, he breaks down the characters so well and it's so easy for newbies to understand too, oh and Heihachi also had the down + 1 as well so that could be an easy 50% of your life gone, and it's just so much better with everything Heihachi's got going for him.

    • @davidparry5310
      @davidparry5310 Před 5 lety +2

      'Why ever pick Paul over Heihachi?'
      Because Heihachi doesn't have the same scope for mix-ups?
      'Heihachi also had the down + 1 as well'
      Heihachi's doesn't lead to a mix-up, whereas Paul's does. He has the option of either a 4,2 or a 2 extension, while Heihachi only has the 2 extension (and doesn't even have that in all Tekken games - I think they introduced it Tekken 5). Moreover, Paul's 2 extension (in Tekken 5 onwards) can be significantly delayed, allowing for both hit confirmation and for putting the opponent in a position of uncertainty since they don't know whether the extension is coming or not (something else that Heihachi doesn't have, to the best of my knowledge).

I think of Tekken pre TTT1 as being just a totally different era. International Tekken tournaments weren't a thing and no one gave a damn about frame data. Since comprehensive frame data for those games isn't available, you're relying on a much less complete picture when judging the strength of characters from those games, and making meaningful comparisons with their counterparts in later games is inherently problematic. Moreover, even if frame data were available, you'd then encounter a different problem, namely that you'd be retrospectively judging the characters by standards that no one at the time used.

    Paul is not trash, if you do the F, F 1+2 throw and tag you get a free hit after the throw, it's so useful and it does a lot of damage

    Despite these disadvantages, we use Paul's df1, df4 to poke, qcf 2 is used as whiff punish, CH4 followed by qcf2 and other moves like uf3 4 and ws 2 as launch punishables which still makes paul a great character in TTT1 🙂 you should check it out

      You know, I love Paul, he’s my main. But you just made me realize this and you’re absolutely right. Some of his moves have always looked off, like actual bad form in martial arts off lol.
      But hey I guess some of that form got sacrificed for the insane fucking power this man had obtained so I guess it’s all good lol

    TTT Paul was even worse...
    - the worse side step then other chars. Even Jacks have better.
    - really weak dmg in juggles
    - 100% life bar like the "weakest" characters
    He can be worse then P. Jack, or maybe in the same tier... But still less life bar.

    He is still garbage, there are many advantages all characters have and Paul hasn’t. The excuse will be that Paul got the deathfest high damage... ok I would rather reduce deathfest damage to 35 but give him all the advantages others have

      'there are many advantages all characters have and Paul hasn’t.'
      Like?
      'The excuse will be that Paul got the deathfest high damage'
      Not just that. He has brilliant punishment. Moreover, his moveset is chock-full of scope for mix-ups. He also has a standing launcher that's less than 15 frames (which very few other characters have) in b3.

    • @mshklh2099

      df2 fast safe mid high crush launcher
      also note that it continues the combo even on airborne opponent which is hella cheap
      hopkick: track both sides and has double the range and both hits launches on normal hit
      also continues the combo normally on airborne opponent
