    Got one for Christmas. The camera is surprisingly good! Better than my mom's (what I'm used to using) now I can actually capture pics of my cats without it looking odd. I recommend if you're a t mobile user!

    why didn't you talk about the vintage mode?

    • @BenefitOfTheDoud
      @BenefitOfTheDoud  Před měsícem

      Ahh..there are a coupe of reasons. Mostly, it's because this video was made during a time when the camera section was a small part of a bigger review on the podcast, so this was more of a broader view of camera, covering the more common modes. The good news is, we have a look at the newer generation of Revvl phones coming up, so thanks for putting that on our radar. Cheers!

    I think that we are a little too hard on cameras in most cases anymore. you can do so much with a phone camera and knowledge of how a system works. Someone interested in photography probably can get some amazing photographs out of these sensors. I honestly think the biggest sin that a camera can commit is making people hate photography. A good camera will make people want to learn and explore their world and capture it around them. :)
    also for the price I have definietly seen worse. Google just ... ya know

    I was forced to buy this when my nord n10 failed just out of warranty (will be my last Nord phone). The camera on this is not as good as the one in the nord, but the one in the nord was not as good as the one in my LG V30 (it was an ATT phone that would not fully mygrate to T-mobile when I changed carriers). But all of the cameras are "good enough" for most of my "cell phone camera" purposes. I still use my "real" camera if I plan on creating large prints.

    Just got the phone. Just now realizing that in pro mode the longest shutter speed is 1/2 a second. I'm I missing something? I've never seen a phone camera only go to 1/2 a sec shutter. My S7 could go to a 10 second shutter. I like this in pro mode for night photos that I don't want any noise in the photo and want to capture details, can sit the phone down for the longer shutter. Is there a way to get a longer shutter speed without using night mode or light trace? They will both add noise.

      The girl holding the phone in the thumbnail is actually using it these days. If I can pry it away from her, I'll give it a look for you, cuz I honestly don't remember.

    "is pretty much where all of society is headed." *Buzzer goes off* nope, not ALL of society. Not this guy, anyways. I actually came here to comment about what you had to say about the camera and immediately saw someone right before me that appears to be sharing the same sentiment. I too think somehow 1) everybody's become an easy critic of everything, which seems to lend to our overall sense of entitlement and subsequently detracts from our ability to appreciate things we do have and 2) we seem to think most things suck when....do they though? The camera on this phone can shoot in, what is it, 300 something frames per second for super slow motion videos. It has a super night shot mode that picks up things that I can't even see with my naked eye. The things we're having issues with, especially phones and their abilities, aren't even issues. Ten years ago, hell, even five years ago, this stuff would've been mind-blowing. But now somehow everything sucks before we even realize how awesome it was two seconds ago. I can't remember the last time I saw a positive review about a phone camera, if that's any indication of where things are, I don't know what is. It's a camera. Of course there's gonna be artificacts and loss of detail when you try to zoom in to see a specific star in the Andromeda galaxy with a bunch of light noise around you. There's nothing wrong with the camera on that phone; there's nothing wrong with almost ANY camera on any phone these days. It's just us. It's our lack of appreciation that needs to be fixed.
    Edit- not trying to rag on you or saying that you didn't make a decent video here. In fact, I'm not really saying anything directly to YOU, this is more or less to humanity at large. And by no means am I even close to perfect, I could use a lot of work in the same department I'm speaking to here. But I think some things that aren't being said at times need to be said. And I picked my moment, I suppose. Thanks for the review and taking the time to make this video.

      In general, I agree. That being said, I've tested some phones whose nighttime performance is truly bad. As in unusable really. The reality is that cameras on phones these days are really remarkable, but they're largely dependent on the light you have available. The gap between "good" cameras and "bad" cameras is shrinking. That doesn't mean there's nothing wrong with the bad ones. But realistically, you have to be nit-picky. Will most people care? Likely not, but there are some out there, myself included, who look at the camera first when buying a phone and everything else a distant second. Those are the people who will nitpick the crap out of these cameras.
      P.S. If you're looking for a positive camera review, my video comparing the iphone 12 Pro vs the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra puts two amazing cameras up against each other. Those are both 1K phones though. If you want a REALLY good camera at a great price, Check out the live stream I did around the end of October where Cliff and I spent 20 minutes or so gushing over the camera on the Pixel 6. I'll be doing a Pixel 6 vs iPhone 13 Pro video in early January and those are two spectacular phone cameras. Hope you'll stop by!

      Yea I am a culprit, but more complaining about digital zoom, the regular clicks on close subjects are actually pretty good even on a cheaper phone, I agree, but, you have to pay a lot more for more digital clarity when you zoom on a subject than the supposed antiquated lenses of what is supposed to be the past tech, though you are lured in by the whole megapixel thing that does not even come close to "old" cameras.

    Nightmodes during daytime?!
    "Yikes!" that wide-angle might have been better off as a front facing camera. :S
    Using a Mi MiX 2S (IMX363) with Modded GCam 6.2.030 I tend to take two quick shots (No HDR+ Enhanced activated, to slow for my 4 feral kidz) and then a nightmode one if the object is/or went still which makes colors a tad weird but adds details ever so often. The 2x Optical zoom is for sale... used approx 50 times over 1.5 years for comparison only. Zoom doesn't help when its not good to begin with ;)

    • @BenefitOfTheDoud
      @BenefitOfTheDoud  Před 3 lety

      Yeah, I wasn't super clear about that. Those two night mode shots were taken at night, but the composition looks like a weirdo cross between a day and night shot.

    • @Iliyena87
      @Iliyena87 Před 3 lety

      @@BenefitOfTheDoud I thought you were clear on that part though! But I am missing a comment about the machinations in AWB and nightmode used in daylight. Since it forces extra software lines and and such to be used :)
      Eg. GCam gives a finished experience but those new Sonys should be using RAW since their software making the jpg break the make in make or break, I've heard. :)

      Very true. Cameras are getting better in this price range, but there's still a lot to be desired. It mostly comes down to lighting.
