  • @scstudios8
    @scstudios8 Před 2 lety +3

    We really need a VR120 standard so we don't have to mess with keeping tripod legs out of the shot. Its also pretty much a waste seeing so much sky and ground on most shots. A super wide angle is still enough, especially when you use a 16:9 aspect ratio, which lets you keep all the width, but not the sky and ground so much. I have been shooting custom rigs in that format for a while and you can still port it to VR180, you just dont see all the sky and ground, which is better. The big deal is, you get 4 times the pixel density on the stuff you care about. You dont have to go half the FOV since you are shooting 2 dimensions and you can also use all of the 16:9 sensor, so you dont get a massive amount of wasted space in your final shot. Its just all better. Especially when you playback in a headset where you dont have this giant sized image. The hardware can be much lower power also which is great for cheaper headsets. I think soon, all the hardware will catch up, but circular fisheye lenses never are that sharp compared to equi lenses. I am using twin Zcam E1 cams with Rokinon 7.5mm lenses, or even Meike 6.5mm sometimes. With the 6.5mm circular fisheye, you can still get 180 degrees horizontal, it only crops out the top and bottom some, but that is the amount nobody cares about. Like the ceiling tiles or the shoes the photographer is using. With all those pixels used on what matters, and by using a lens that is equi, you get a smaller file that is much higher quality and still a super wide field of view. Its really all about standards. VR180 is great when you need it, but most of the time, i dont think you even want that wide of a view.

    I would suggest using counterweight behind the mic to balance the rig with camera extending that much forward, this would prevent extended wear on all threads especially those on the expensive leveling tripod attachment. It would also make all more stable.
    Another way to deal with tripod leg in the frame is to keep two tripod legs straighten and shorten on the edge of the frame while 3rd one longer extending backward with sand bag on it to keep the rig from falling toward subject. I often anchor this 3rd leg to the ground when I don't have to move the rig during shooting. This way the camera can be installed without forward extension which makes things much easier and more balanced. Goodluck
    This comes from my past astro photography experience where balancing the camera on the tracker was essential and makes shooting and camera panning much easier.

      been using the R5c for 180vr while editing on FCPx, short answer is use an external SSD, edit FROM the external to the internal SSD, on my macbook im able to playback in 1:1 speed directly, however if you can't, select "VIEW proxy" and let it cook for a couple hours to create proxys, then edit the proxy, when ready to render, reset VIEW to original to get high-res output.
      *while my MBP edit fine with the original, I still find switching to proxy helps if you are doing a stack of layers which otherwise will slow you down.

    And one more question: Do you separately record the audio with the Zoom H3-VR, manually sync it with the camera mic in premiere and disable the audio track of the camera, or is there another easier technique for the audio recorded by the Zoom H3-VR?

    • @marksoukup1267
      @marksoukup1267 Před 2 lety +2

      As I normally do it, I'll record audio with my Zoom H1n or H4 separately from the camera and then sync in post. You could do a line out from the Zoom H3-VR into the R5 input if you wanted to save a step of audio syncing in post. Keep in mind though if you do the line out of the H3-VR into the R5 you will only end up with stereo audio, so it'd defeat the purpose of using a 5.1 audio recorder in the first place.

    Nice parts list and introduction to setting up a VR rig!
    One of the nice things about the Insta360 EVO was its small light size and post software stabilization meant that in a pinch you could handhold it steady for short video clips and probably do just fine, as I have before. With the Canon VR lens that may be more difficult. 😅
    Almost 30 seconds to display a frame in Premiere? Yikes! I was planning on rendering out an Apple ProRes 422 video file anyways using the dedicated Canon software. How well does that program function? Have you tested it yet?
    Although a minor footnote, how does taking photos work? You showed a brief example. Do you just take a jpeg photo and import into Premiere and then save out a corrected jpeg file that we can then edit in Lightroom if we desire?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  Před 2 lety +1

      No the Canon Software only have DPX and MP4 - there is no ProRes (yet - pretty sure they did not get Apple license yet) - so Premiere is the fastest solution to get editing friendly render out. For photo - it can not process RAW (yet again lol... I know, Canon release the camera a lit bit too early) - so only jpg can be render - and it is render out from Canon VR Utility.

    • @marksoukup1267
      @marksoukup1267 Před 2 lety

      Ah ok. Maybe that's why they said early 2022 software release (for proper ProRes support).
      It could be nice to provide a short 10 second 8k clip for potential buyers of the lens to test out with their current computer, to see what the editing and exporting process is like with Premiere or the EOS VR Utility, which could help them decide it they really want the lens or not.
