    A while back, I had a lil baby 3s pack pop after a charger (the blue unit shown here) finished the crest of charging cycle. Blew the a$$ clean outta the "lipo safe bag" in about 5 seconds, then the fancy linoleum floorboards shortly after. Filled the house with smoke in 15 seconds, which is howong it took me to get them outside. Took 2.5 hours for the fully-opened house to clear the smoke. That was a tiny lil 300mah unit. Imagine an unattended 5000 4s? I use a tin now with cables grommetted through the side. It doesn't seal. Good so far. Two ways to learn, I guess. Thanks for the vid.

    Thumbs up. I always (balance-) charge with 1C. But didn’t know that not fully charging the battery would matter much. Quite handy with crawlers. But with buggies and speed runs, full voltage is important.

      I think you're supposed to poke a hole with a fork like a tv dinner to relieve any internal pressure. I'd love to hear John's thoughts, though.

      The only one I ever had puff,I just took it in the back yard and wacked it with a shovel. Nice little fire show then threw the remains away

    I still have a working ni-cad pack from the early 90's (and shocker, it still has nearly full capacity). But otherwise, I'm fully lipo. I had one lipo that fully discharged down to no volts - I got rid of it safely. My other lipo packs have held up quite well. I had a nickle metal hydride battery for my T-maxx 3.3 starter, but that didn't hold up very well (at all). My charger is an old SkyRC IMAX (store branded, & undoubtedly just a clone) B6 charger - works well.

      I've got two 6v ni-cad packs for my Tyco Rebound that have been going strong since I got it as a kid in 1996... They haven't lost much of their capacity, it would run for about 15 mins on a full charge when it was brand new, and it still runs for about 15 mins on a full charge 26 years later. I charge it up and take it for rip around the basement a couple times a month

    I use a Hobbymate D6 Duo AC/DC (same exact menu as your ISDT but different colors) on ovonic 5500 50C 3s Lipos for my Arrma Big Rock. While i could possibly charge at 2c (11 amps) i choose to charge at 1c, takes about an hour from storageand doesn't get hit. While i don't cover the batteries i never charge without being present and constantly monitoring. I feel the pack every so often feeling for swelling, so the moment i feel it, out it goes

    I have a question I seen this video and seen that you had the xt plug as well the white plug do you need to have both plugs in when charging a battery

    • @jerryvolpini7987
      @jerryvolpini7987 Před 2 lety

      The white plug is the jst connector, used to balance the battery pack while charging. As John mentioned, you should always balance charge your packs so, yes, you need both plugged in. That being said, if you do decide to do a fast charge than the jst/balance plug does not need to be plugged in 👍

    I use a old computer power supply to power my twenty yr old Duratrax Intellepeak Ice charger. I charge my gens ace 4300 s at 4. amps so they never get hot.. To ballance them , I use whats called an Astro Blinky, its just not built into the charger.. John, have you ever heard of these two products ?? They still work great,and as I"m just getting back into the hobby , I"m not ready to pop for new stuff!! This charger came out around same time as LIPOs ?? It still is like new man,and for now I can crawl for two and half hours on each 4300 Gens Ace lipo!!

    Interesting. I didn't know that going a bit less than a full charge helps increase battery life., though I figured that reducing the charge rate does. I just got a fancier charger that lets me easily control that.

I've been doing this 30 years and I have trouble following you sometimes (write yourself a script, maybe?) 😉 Hey, cover more advanced techniques or theories all you want but have a separate video for it. That being said, I think videos like these are really needed and have lots of great information for just about anyone to take away! Thanks, John! 👍

    Nice simple breakdown of it all. Thanks man.
    I have to admit I don't have much in the way of protection when charging the battery. Mainly cos the wires for the balance port are so short, there's no way I could put the battery in a bag let alone a box, concrete or whatever. I did use a terracotta pot over the top once which kinda worked. Flames would just shoot straight up the drain hole then haha
