  • This is a video showing how you can cheaply and easily build a vacuum chamber. This is needed for certain projects, and I hope it can be useful for you.

    You might realize when working on or designing some project that you will need a vacuum chamber. Maybe you need to make mirrors for a laser by vacuum deposition, perform a vacuum distillation of H2O2 for a rocket, or maybe just to get the bubbles out of your epoxy. So build one!

    Very cool. I've done this before. However, the sad part is that if you run a compressor in this manner for any length of time, it will destroy itself. The reinforcement under the piston was intended to pull air in with minimal effort and push it back out at high pressure. Setting it up with a restriction on the intake (to generate a vacuum) reverses things and creates internal forces on the piston/wrist-pin/connecting-rod that were never considered. In other words, the internals were designed to be stressed when _pushing_ air out, *not* when _pulling_ it in. FWIW - Just don't put yourself in a situation where you _need_ this to work for whatever you are doing. I learned that the _real_ hard way. You'll get some warning though, it will start getting really loud right before the piston breaks loose from the con-rod...

      +BluntForceTrauma666 Thank you for the warning! I did not use it long enough for that to happen, but I can imagine what you are describing. What happened when yours broke?

      May May no lol. The piston goes up and down no matter what way the power is connected.

    Very informative. However I'd keep the end of the hose that attaches to the tire and just use a valve stem in the cap. Then you have your one way valve and you are finished. You also should have a gauge to monitor pressure to be safe. :) learned this trick when going for my HVAC license. You can make water boil around 60 degrees using the vacuum method.

    Thank you for posting this video DIY, im looking to make a vacuum pump for some evacuated heat pipes, ive heard you can make one with a bike tire pump also by reversing some things inside, Also for leaks, just make one of those one-way valves involving a rubber ball and some PVC pipe, leak solved.

    I used a glass tap fixed on to the chamber of choice, and closed it when the vacuum was drawn. I used a 1 gallon wine demijohn for my chamber, so I could use a rubber bung for the pipes to go through, and it seals perfectly. Downside is I can only put small items inside at present. Hope this may be usefull to someone.

    That "one way valve" you keep refering to is called a check valve.

    • @JaycubL
      @JaycubL  Před 8 lety +2

      +SMOBY44 Yes there are several names for it and check valve is probably the most usual. You can call it a check valve if it sounds nicer to you, but for someone who might not know my opinion is that "one way valve" is a clearer name.

    • @JaycubL
      @JaycubL  Před 4 lety

      You could have a hose from the discharge side and a hose to the vacuum side and use whichever one you want.

    Subbed you a while back. Think your idea`s are inspiring, especially at this time of year with the bad weather (Scotland). So, what kind off projects could you use this vacuum for, what do you have in mind?.

    • @JaycubL
      @JaycubL  Před 10 lety +1

      Like Energetic tests said it can be used for vacuum distillation of H2O2. I might try making aluminum powder in a vacuum at some point, and I had this idea that you could 3D print in aluminum by "selective laser sintering" aluminum powder, but without a vacuum chamber there would probably be a lot of oxide forming and being included in the part. I will need a vacuum chamber also for experimenting with ion drives for spacecraft, research into nuclear energy and production of different types of radiation and maybe even antimatter, work with gas lasers, vacuum deposition of metals for making mirrors (lasers, telescopes, microscopes), it might be needed for some electronic stuff.

    • @JaycubL
      @JaycubL  Před 8 lety

      It would be possible but the valves the pump comes with will not work (one valve will constantly release any pressure that you get in the cylinder). Maybe I can try to figure it out and make a video of it, or you could.

      Clips? There is a female 12 plug attatched to the battery by solder, and the male 12v plug was connected to the pump as the pump came from the factory.

    If space was a vacuum we would be ripped of the earth or do I misunderstand what a vacuum is.

    • @JaycubL
      @JaycubL  Před 7 lety

      Gravity holds the atmosphere in place, the pressure gets progressively lower at higher altitudes. If you were in a jar with air pressure inside, then the lid was suddenly opened with vacuum outside, then yes you might get carried out with the escaping air. But vacuum is not inherently pulling on anything, it just means there is little or nothing there.

    • @TheWorldgonecrazy
      @TheWorldgonecrazy Před 7 lety

      Our atmosphere is thin and would NOT stop vacuum of space if it were real.

    Check out CZcams user. The King of Random. He shows how to make a one way check valve. Also you could place an O-ring in between the bolt head and the inside part of the lid of the jar and another O-ring in between the top of the lid and the nut, that should give a nice seal.
