As a drummer, I always wondered how they got the drums so silent, especially on TV shows were the vocals were done live over a backing track while the instruments were mimicked.

This is very helpful to me as I've started performing arts at my college and part of the course is making, finding and buying props for the stage. I'm going to subscribe.
Another good alternative could be mesh heads, since they're meant for low volume playing they can be a pretty silent while also providing a realistic look.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been filming a dialog scene and the drums drowned everything out. Nothing but unhappy soundmen everywhere.

This is actually really interesting because I watched my favorite movie last night (Whiplash) And had actually wondered how they got such clear audio throughout the drum scenes and also throughout music sets with such strong instruments. Something that I really liked about the movie was the dialog had never really faltered and you didn't have to lean into the the movie to hear what they were saying but you didn't have to backup too much when the music started up again.

Just a small tip: You can buy silent drum heads on the market, they are called Remo Silentstrokes. Just put tape on the inside of the drumheads and you have the same effect as you described. You can use graffiti-remover to remove the Silentstroke emblem. 😁
If you use your method you can clearly see that the drumheads are on the same hight-level as the rims, especialy on close up shots.

I like how you use physics to cancel out the cymbals. Two the same frequencies cancel out each other.
My brothers used to play the drums in the garage when we were teenagers. Every once in a while, my parents would ask me to go get them for something. The person who was playing the drums got to wear some headphones / earmuffs that muffled the sound a little bit so they would keep playing while I was trying to get their attention. It was super annoying at the time. But now 15 years later, I don’t know what happened to the drum set, but I still have those headphones. 😉

I was on a film set pretending to be a bass player. They also did this to the drums. The music was playback (my bass included), but the main character/frontman was singing his lead vocals live.
Even the name of the channel is a dad pun. Friggin love it

You can also get practice kits that have a lot of little holes in each the skins and cymbals. Basically silent playing, but it feels like the real deal.
