I think you're correct. 300/500 running in miles then a service and see what you've got. Sounds really nice.

My Commando took around 500-1000 miles after a re-bore before the puffs of smoke went away. Prior to re-bore, one season it started puffing smoke on throttle blips on just the left side. This turned out to be original intake valve seal cracked/crumbling and letting rocker box oil to be sucked down the intake valve guide. Managed to replace both left and right seals without pulling the head at all, used new Viton rubber seals from KibbleWhite....oil smoke issue cured.

A lot less smoke than last time

I had a triumph T140 that all of the sudden started kicking smoke out of the right pipe one afternoon...then a day or two later it just stopped happening. I was ready to pull the top end apart, but I didn't need to. I figured my shop elves must have gotten in there at night and fixed whatever was going on.

Hi Frank, I think you will find the green Norton had wet sumped, oil drains down from the tank into the sump, adding oil to the tank will only over fill it when the engine is started and returns excess oil back , it will also make the engine smoke badly until it clears, and or, shoot oil out of the breather, I hope this helps, but take the bike for a run to be sure, Robert.

Bike has the 1975 style AMR Anti-Wet-Sump mod installed. I simply over filled the tank when I "topped it off" and believed the dipstick rather than looking into the tank and seeing the oil was filled up into the filler neck. All my fault. Dipstick is (was) wrong for this early model tank.

@@fjdelmonte While the AMR mod should stop wet sumping, there are cases reported on AccessNorton forum that sometimes wet sumping can still occur following the AMR mods. Best not to rule this out unless the sump is checked for excess oil after standing a few weeks/months.
