- Sgt. 1st Class Jacob Braun breaks down every piece of gear a US Army Ranger would carry in their aviator kit bag during a night-raid mission. The bag includes protective gear, ammunition, and a Samsung Galaxy phone. Braun explains why each item is integral to a Ranger's mission. According to the Army, Rangers are the branch's "premier special operations light infantry raid force."
According to Braun, Rangers specialize in infiltrating enemy territory, completing their objective, and rapidly withdrawing, often at night. The Army's 75th Ranger Regiment is headquartered at Fort Benning, Georgia (soon to be renamed Fort Moore).

I’ve been lucky to work with SF, SEALs and Marine Raiders in training. The Rangers were the most impressive dudes I’ve ever seen. They were so fast and so fundamentally sound. My soldiers were in awe of them and I was glad we got to train with them. Other people around the Army including the 160th will tell you how squared away they are. It’s funny that they don’t always get a lot of credit compared to other units. I’m sure they like it that way though
Nah man Id disagree the older genreation of green berets are so incredibly professional. The rangers i worked with were at up as far as rangers go. still more professional compared to conventional units but GB can definitly get on point faster smoother and easier than rangers. Its takes a battalion of rangers to do what an ODA of GB do. Going back to the generational thing the younger cats regaudless of unit is ate up to high hell. so entitled they are.

Rangers are badass. My old man was a Ranger in Vietnam in 68-69, a Lrrp. Thats long range recon and patrol. Purple heart, bronze star. His stories are incredible.

Nice. My grandpa was also in Vietnam but he was a meteorological observer in the army. Then he went on to help design the b-1 bomber after the war.

It's probably dumb to say, but it's so amazing how well he knows his gear and how versed he is in explaining it's purpose and use, and just ranger protocol as a whole. I know that's their job and why they train so rigorously, but it's still so cool and humbling to watch a professional talk about their trade

@EF2000 SOF-wide deployments are usually 6 months or less because when they're home they're always TDY or just constantly training. High Op Tempo for sure
Fascinating…i am an old Ranger (C co. 1/75th)…1982-85. Grenada Raider….the equipment we carried looks medieval/ancient compared to what these amazing Ranger Regt men carry now. Awesome, totally and utterly some of the finest leaders/warriors in any military today. Mad respect…RTLW!

Learned a lot about being in the Infantry; wasn’t just about Ranger raids/recons/ambushes…Infantry is a big branch. Became a army helo pilot for 27yrs after leaving 1st Batt…always loved flying for the grunts. Like I said, Mad Respect.
I can feel you with this even kit from early gwot is a lot more ancient looking. I got out in 2011 and we were just starting to switch to some of the kit he showed. When i was first in we were rocking the que ball helmets all tan spray paint then we went to the spray paint camo net pattern, then some got the crye helmet covers before they switched to the modern helmet just as I was getting out.

It's crazy how good soldier's kit has been right now compared to 80 years ago, back then a simple bullet hit on center mass could kill you, seriously injure you and take you out of the fight if you're lucky, these days with bulletproof plates getting lighter and lighter, bullet hits on center mass won't kill you instantly.
Every soldier can even communicate better and more comfortable with comm headsets and walkie talkies, no longer they need bulky radio setup we typically see on soldiers back in the day

I worked with the rangers overseas when I was attached to an ODA team. The rangers were pretty solid dudes. Cocky as hell but knew their stuff.
Haha cocky is right, the more direct action groups have even more skill and knowledge, but many of those kids in ranger battalion thought they themselves were the shit.

@@BeastOps10 I spent 9 years in the Regiment. I am well aware of how cocky Rangers are. My point is, that although they are SOF, and some believe they have a “earned” a right to be cocky, the best ones are humble but confident. Cockiness is a front.

@@abricots5588 because the United States was founded on Christianity thus the United States military falls under the US government making it a Christian based military but with the exception soldiers having any individual religion they want granted by our constitutional rights. Now being gay/ homosexuality is a sin in the eyes of God and an abomination to Christianity. It’s always been tradition for the military to recruit the young men and women from high school as an early career which usually the military is good for you. If you’re 18 which is legal age, you don’t need parents approval obviously but point being you can do whatever you’d like with your life as in a career from that point. They can recruit 17 year olds but they need an adult’s signature to actually process in. I don’t believe it’s such a bad thing for young people to go into the military as long as their lives aren’t wasted with toxic and/or corrupt leader ship. It’s also not the military’s job to inform you that your kids are interested in joining. That’s the child’s choice if he wants to inform his family on his aspirations. The military isn’t forcing anyone to join. Everyone has their own free will. Now gay books shouldn’t be in schools because they’re pretty disgusting. The gross language and pedophila in the books are sinful and the teachings in them are evil. You don’t want 6 year olds learning how to read from from a book about homosexual intercourse. That’s evil and sick. You can’t really make a comparison with all due respect. The United States was founded on Christ and it needs to go back to a Pro Christ era. The mighty combat knife has been replaced....with an MP-600 Gerber...but when you think about it, very few CQC/CQB encounters ever go hand to hand. Most Soldiers/Marines that do have a large fixed blade mainly use them for opening up food and jimmying open containers.
I can only speak for what myself and the squad had. Couple secret squirrels with Kbars, mostly pocket style flip knifes. Utility knifes to cut 550 really, my favorite was just a long shank flat head screw driver (ol trusty) the one in the tool box you reach for in those "Finesse" situations. doors, boxes, pad locks, gates, mre's, Encouraging the M2 to work properly. Hell I even remember using it to help climb up and out of steep inclines and over walls. Think I got more out of that 4 dollar beater than anything else on my kit to be honest.
most rangers Ive known had either a auto open or flip open benchmade or similar knife they carried with them in their pocket everywhere in or out of kit.
Fairly common to still strap a combat knife around the lower leg.
@@joshua3630 not with the infil and exfil rangers do on a normal mission you want to keep as much weight and constricting things off your legs as possible and keep them on your core. Its also part of the reason you don't see drop holsters in regiment. You see on the hip or if they do a lot of vehicle ops they will mount it high on the plate to allow access easy not on the leg as it will cause problems on a 10+k infil.
Infantry in general and rangers in particular train by saying you're dead if you lose your firearm. Soldiers carry knives for utility, and only as a last resort weapon.
I would love to see some other militaries kits as well, just to see some of the comparisons and differences.
It just depends on mission set. There's only so many ways to skin a cat.

Once as a kid I tried "fast roping" (just some 3-4m thing, I was like 8yrs old max.) without gloves. First and last time.

This E7 is clearly competent and knowledgeable. It is interesting that for on of him, several Rangers have dropped out and not made it to E7 for a variety of reasons beyond quitting. Probably at least one blew his knee out, probably two. At least one, probably two made a bad moral decision although Rangers have been too busy to get into as much trouble as they used to, yet boys will be boys. At least one, maybe two Rangers have had another military dream materialize while they hit a reenlistment zone. Like spaceforce or more likely SF selection or selection for another elite unit. My point is that it takes a combination of luck, to a great degree due to injury, and other factors which I’ve mentioned to survive in the Regiment for 12 years and beyond. Without a doubt it takes above all a dedicated operator. Well done him and I hope those who fell out on his track due to bad luck, have come to terms with it.
Ranger battalion used to, if not now, promote based on certain training or school objectives more than time in service. Initial promotions were faster than the regular army, but you can't get an e5 without Ranger school, then promotions beyond that depend on more factors.

Sarnt Braun is a certified unit if he’s managed to spend 12 years in the regiment. Usually they’ll try and rotate you out at some point due to the abrams charter from my understanding. Make the grass grow brother.

Looking at a specific type of tourniquet on the plate-carrier that wasn't mentioned in the video. The multi-tool is a Gerber MP600. Once standard issue in the Army. No longer so. But apparently still issued to the Rangers. It's a classic. Still made. I own one. Not the absolute best. But a very good multi-tool.
It’s a North American rescue CAT (combat application tourniquet)!
The gerber is not an issued item to rangers, most carry one but not a specific brand or model
Damn it’s crazy to think a ranger with all his gear could weigh 300 pounds during a mission. And he said he was set up light because he’s a leader. So a rifleman or specialist role is probably even more.
i carried +110lbs while on missions in Batt. the load is REALLY well distributed, so it didn't feel *that* heavy*... but, being combat equipped, yea, we weighed A LOT!

lightest kit I had was 90lbs when on squirter interdiction, most the time it was 120+ and I weighted between 150-165 entire time i was in batt, except during and immediately after ranger school where I only weight 135-140ish.

That's awesome these guys finally got some hearing protection. I was nowhere near a special ops unit but I'm pretty sure our infantry guys never had hearing pro on missions.
It's been issued to the Rangers and other infantry teams for decades (at least since the late 90s early 2000s).

the plate carrier is 7 years old, the rest is probably replaced as needed. The IFAK internals for example, need to get replaced every few years simply because the medical stuff expires
More than likely the carrier is original but it probably got replaced not too long ago... pouches and any other kits can get torn up pretty significantly during training and deployments so it wouldn't surprise me if he had to replace a lot of those frequently scenario dependent

Shock tube is a length of explosive material in the form of a wire that connects to the high explosive charge. The shocktube initiates the charge via sympathetic detonation. The shock tube initiatior attaches to the shock tube and kicks off the detonation chain.

As much as I love all these insider videos, I know this is totally a publicity grab from the army. Anyone who’s been in within the past 10 years knows the army is having a massive retention problem. The lack of war/influx of rampant toxic leadership (to include all the way to the top) is having a major strain on this peace time hands tied military that seems to be lead by people who’ve never shot/been shot at by the enemy.
I say this because in my upbringing, there’s no way in HECK the 75th let alone the us army would go this in depth into this unit. Back when I went in with option 40 (2013 for reference, really not that long ago, yet the war and rules of engagement were already changing drastically), there were these super old videos on the army channel that just showed some sort of training exercise the regiment was performing. That’s all the info we had.
Insider is putting out better “recruiting” videos than the army. It’s nostalgic to people like me, yet showing all the cool things to the outsiders. I wouldn’t be surprised if there wasn’t some sort of agreement/payoff/something that’s allowing them to film all of this just for the inherent recruiting these videos will bring.
Idk about all that bro, I was in Aco 3/75 in 2013 and a bunch of the dudes in my platoon had been in that surviving the cut show. I remember rgt also produced a recruiting ad that year where they showed real combat footage, training events, pt ect. with music from Breaking Benjamin. Mostly for pr to get recruiting and retention up but it was cool to see recognition, good for morale imo.
It's not that deep. All branches do this, retention issues or not. I mean the song "In the Navy" was literally a pitched by the Navy for recruitment, I don't think anyone would say the Navy was having man power issues back then.

My dad was in the military and he was deployed to Somalia he was on the black hawk down raid and things of that nature he was part of 10th mountain division and once rangers were running after his ex fil vehicle and when he saw them he said they had their own custom secondaries like mini shotguns I wonder if that’s still viable
Those are for breaching. Squad leaders typically carry a short barrel shotgun with hatton rounds that can defeat most residential style doors.

I would love to see a video about how equipment evolved over time. Say what tools were used in the 50's, 70's, 90's, etc.
These guys are hardcore. Got to watch a few of them do their thing and it was impressive. If these guys are coming after you, you're fucked.
Common misconception. The red lens does not reduce your signature. It actually increases it. Red light waves travel farther than other light waves. That’s why they are on obstacles such as radio towers. The main reason for the red light is to protect your night vision. It will not flush the rhodopsin from your eyes. They should really use the blue-green lights that are used in the cockpit of helicopters. They are not perceived by nvg’s and protect night vision as well. I used to go round and round with Sergeants Major when they told me to not use the blue-green filter on my flashlight in the field. This needs to be taught to leadership and end the long-time fallacy.
He did say it should only used in a secure area. Plus it doesn't catch the eye like regular lights. I did hear once that Troops in Vietnam said they could sometimes see each other because of the red flashlights lol

If only most regular army infantry leaders would allow their guys to set up their kit so it is best for them or use their own plate carriers as long as they're a reputable brand along with following the "Big 5 Philosophy" of the Regiment. It's astonishing that some leaders I've met don't like any of the stuff SOF does/uses simply because they're own guys "aren't good enough to be allowed to use it" or they just think being lighter and faster, more mobile doesn't matter. It's sad that some leaders won't motivate their guys to want to be the best they can be and then some and actually be effective at their job. I've heard Ianfantry and (even my own) Fire support team leadership say that the regular infantry/FiST teams are better than SOF... as I watched most of my FiST barely know how to handle a weapon safely around other people. Oh, my section chief also told me that marksmanship isn't important at all... and yet we were attached to an Infantry Unit.
So true, i was in 2/327 101 ab and we were running flcs over our iotvs in 2021.... i get that they only want us to wear our iotv but the flc? Come on, the gen 4 iotv has MOLLE for a reason, shit is so clunky with a flc over it.

Yeah, the way I see it, individual soldiers should be able to invest in their own kit (mainly plate carriers & chest rigs, since body armor causes insurance concerns) that’s lighter and more mobile. If you take pride in your kit and hone your craft, you’re even more effective as an infantryman.

2 Questions, hopefully someone in the comments with experience can answer: 1.) Where would you carry flashbangs? I see them being used in the video clips 2.) No chemlights? Seems weird he wouldn’t have a bunch of chemlights stashed somewhere for night raids.
My guess is as a platoon sergeant he wouldn’t need these things, but that’s a guess.
He is a platoon seargent, he will definitely not be clearing buildings or right up front with the guys. His job is to manage the squads. mostly joes/team-leaders/squad leaders would carry flash bangs and Chem lights
You have pouches for flashbangs. I don't think they were trying to get into disposable equipment very much, but yes chemlights would normally be tied together with 550 and hanging somewhere for easy access.
I figured it was because of his leadership role but it does surprise me that there’s not a bundle of chemlights. I didn’t see a roll of tape or Sharpies, so I’m sure there were some small details left out to keep the video on point and make sure all the big stuff was covered. It was a great video.
Early in the video he spoke about the elastic pouches on the front of his kit below the mag pouches. That's similar to where I put my chemlights. Not necessarily right at the front, but in a similar type of pouch. You can also slide them into the molle webbing on your plate carrier. As a platoon sergeant, he would carry chemlights for potentially marking casualties, or hanging them out a window in a cleared room. I know they're supposed to be on and off the objective quickly, but if they did have a mass casualty situation (and you'll always get one in training haha, because they suck), he would need to help the medics organize a casualty collection area. For my unit, part of that is placing different colored chemlights next to different levels of trauma. Also, it seems low tech next to all his kit, but he would definitely have different pens or map markers as well, again maybe in those types of pouches. Like the comment above said, no matter how sophisticated the gear, you always need something to write with haha.
That depends on unit SOP. I've seen most teams carry flashbangs on the back of their carrier for the man behind them.
Can anybody who has served in the army for 15 to 2O yrs and that 20 years ending recently tell me when they went from calling your equipment, gear to calling it kit like the British do???
