Kind of, since I read in two languages (Spanish and English) I like to have my favorite books in both.

I’m a “minimalist” collector. I like a very curated, small collection room if. Stupid things/media/hobbies that I enjoy. And they’re proportionate to their cost.
For example, I have a board game collection, a handful of watches, about 3 or 4 men’s fragrances, and for fiction, only a few of my absolute favorites, etc.

I'm not a book collector in the sense of buying more than one edition of the same book, but I always try to look out for the prettiest cover when I'm buying a new book

i would call myself a book collector because i like to research different kinds of editions, especially for classics. but i also would never buy a book that i didn't have any intention of reading. lovely video as always, claire!!

Very interesting thoughts Claire. I have a collection of 25 Folio Society books, mostly in the genre of Science Fiction. The nice thing about these books is they are very robust can actually be read carefully without taking any value off the book. I always use a bookmark and don't open the spine much more than 90 degrees. I have a quite a few older first editions which I wouldn't consider reading and would keep a reading copy of those in paperpback or on the kindle. However, I think the folio editions are beautifully luxurious and just asking to be read as a special treat.

As a student, I can only afford secondhand books. But once I start earning my own money, I'd definitely want to collect some of my favorite books as well. Really love your collection!

You know, for all that I love books, it's never occurred to me to collect them. If a copy gets worn out I might replace it but I don't have multiples. Maybe I should - these Folio Society books are so beautiful that it's very tempting!

Oooh I'm jealous of the beautiful Folio's 😍 Im collecting the vintage classics editions of Woolf, and I also want to invest in a edition of the bell jar. I just fell in love with them when I did my dissertation on women's mental health in fiction writing.
Don't often collect books, growing up in a working class area and everything, but when a book makes such an impact on me I have to invest in a kind of monument to my life in novels.

I sometimes think I’m not a collector as I don’t own any book in multiple editions, and will just buy whatever editions of a classic is nicest and at my price point in a shop to read - but then why are library books or ebooks not enough? My bookshelves are in my bedroom and I often stare at them in the morning before I get up - so maybe I am a collector :) lots of different types of collectors there seems!

Oh yes, I'm definitely a collector! I have/collect the Mina Lima children's classics pop up books, Wordsworth editions, the new and gorgeous Marjolein Bastin editions, Penguin Classics, individual editions of Alice in Wonderland, A Little Princess and certain illustrated children's books. I love decorating with books, they truly make a home feel so warm and cozy!

I do collect books mainly in 3 languages: English (this age's lingua franca), Italian (my mother tongue) and Vietnamese (my wife's). Leafing through Joyce or To The Lighthouse in Vietnamese is akin to strolling on the ocean floor, or skating on Mars. I also own and consume books in French and Spanish- not a particularly tall order when one speaks another Romance language. We both can read a little Mandarin and next to no Japanese, but their manga-sized editions are too dễ thương (literal translation from Vietnamese: "easy to love") to be left forsaken on second-hand bookshops' shelves gathering dust and subtropical moisture.
On a rather unrelated and faintly esoteric note, there's something about you that reminds me of Eva Green. Same zodiac sign, perhaps?
Nice channel: carry on with the lovely work, and greetings from Hanoi :)

I collect vintage editions of Miss Read, Rosamunde Pilcher, DE Stevenson (and any of the early 20th century ladies). I also love Persephones, Slightly Foxed, and Folio Society.

I'm not a book collector, but have tried to build my personal library with as many of my favorite authors (as I tend to re-read many favorites) throughout my life. Your collection is stunning!! Had no idea about Folio Society books until earlier this month when I came across a gorgeous--and affordable-- Folio edition (from year 2000) of Rumer Godden's "Greengage Summer." I finally got around to reading her adult novels for the first time this month, beginning with "China Court" and closely followed by Greengage Summer, both novels I devoured!

I do exactly the same thing - it really is all about creating a library for my life. One that I'll re-read regularly and represents my identity in a way. I really want to read Rumer Godden - do you have any recommendations with where I should start?

I definitely have editions of books that are not for reading (books handed down and also beautiful editions that I want to keep undamaged) so then I'll have editions that have been read multiple times.
I have a Folio edition of Rebecca which is stunning and I would love Jane Eyre.
I have a collection of children's books by Templar illustrated by Robert Ingpen because I love his artwork, and I also collect Rupert the Bear annuals that were printed by the Daily Express ( I have over 30 so far.)

Hello, Claire! 👋🏻 Can you maybe make a video on Mrs Dalloway someday? A critical analysis or just talking about it... I recently picked it up and desperately wanted to love it, but, for the life of me, I could not connect with a single character or remotely understand what was happening for the most part. I guess stream of consciousness is really not my thing, but I would love to hear you discuss Mrs Dalloway. Perhaps it might help me read it better...

    • @Claire_Fenby
      @Claire_Fenby  Před 2 lety +1

I’ve made quite a few videos already so won’t be making any more just yet but I do have a full Mrs Dalloway tour where I analyse the novel if that helps! The first time I read Mrs Dalloway I wasn’t a fan but the second time it suddenly all clicked so would always recommend a re-read. It’s not for everyone though!

I love your discussion on being a book collector or not. I enjoy reading alot and I typically try to select books that are lovely to look at even when displayed. So I would say yes I am a definitely a collector!! I don't have multiple copies of many, but I do own "Rebecca" in the reader's Digest edition, as well as the Virago and Folio Society edition. I also own 3 copies of "Alice in Wonderland"--the interactive version, the one illustrated by Salvador Dali, and the Puffin edition. And lastly "The Great Gatsby" has a small collection which includes the Harper-Muse Painted edition and the Illustrated ed. by Black Dog & Leventhal --In the future I'd love to have the Beehive edition, but it is very pricey! I absolutely will re-purchase a beautiful copy of a book (in time) if I read it in my book club in a lesser version, but learn that I love it. So, I will re-sale the other versions and buy what I like to read and look at on the shelf!
