It's interesting that cave holds so many factors: Climate, humidity, darkness, mammals, droppings, fungi/mold/bacteria, insects. (It really is the perfect Petri dish for viruses)
Wow, this was one of the most interesting "docu-drama" videos I've seen in quite a while. Thanks for all your work to make it!
You should read a book by Richard Preston - The hot zone. He was the one that conducted all the research and interviewed people directly involved - both as doctors and researches. The autor of this video mostly copied and did TL;DR of the book 🤷 book is amazing and much more detailed
@@pushingdaisies954Thanks for the rec! 🙂
We just missed visiting that cave coz of time , 2 weeks ago and damn I didn't know it's this deadly , won't be playing in these caves anymore
You had me hooked halfway through then dropped the dog pun and I’m absolutely sold on your channel. Thank you
Wonderful & informative article! Enjoyed it enough to subscribe.
Keep them coming 😊
Fantastic report, Tks.
Great presentation and very informative. Subscribed!
Excellent, thanks. I collaborate often with chiropterologists here in Jamaica, most recently for five days last week with a couple of guys from N America working on their PhD's. Fortunately, all we have to worry about is histoplasmosis, which doesn't trouble me (presumably immune at this point having been exposed when very young back in Canada, and having been in over 400 caves here). The local people mostly consider bats ugly and evil, so we do our best to stress the benefits (cross-pollination, dispersing seeds, eating agricultural pests). But what we never mention is that in some parts of the world, they're vectors and reservoirs for a lot of very nasty diseases (along with what you mentioned, there's also rabies, although not here). Coincidentally, when discussing that with one of the PhD students, he also talked about how important it is to study their resistance to viruses to help humans do the same. This video has helped to reinforce it. Much appreciated. RS Stewart - Jamaican Caves Organisation.
I think that bats 🦇 are cute, actually! 🙂 (Especially when they are in close-up on videos.)
Thanks for your work! It's sad that you need to use ignorance (of the viral reservoir thing) to battle ignorance (of bats' beneficial nature), but it totally makes sense. I too am a bat (and cave) fan, and it's funny how bats seem to instinctively "turn everybody else off", to quote the cheesy B-movie _It Lives By Night_ (AKA _The Bat People,_ 1974).
Great video! The story of Kitum Cave and the search for the host is told in even more detail in The Hot Zone by Richard Preston
Great book
This is my favorite book in the world. It's so morbid, but the most fascinating read I've ever come across.
That's a fantastic book. I read it as a teenager.
Well, that did away with my desire to explore caves!
Awesome work :) thx
The best video on Kitum Cave on the internet, thank you 😊
The abyss has many different curses depending on which layer you return from.
WOW! This blew my mind! Bats, who would have thought?! Thank you so much for your insightful, intriguing and entertaining input! The bio geek in me was overjoyed watching this video. I'm your newest fan! :)
Brilliant! And scary….
good stuff
Sources in description would be great
I'm so glad the animals didn't get sick from the cave
Had subs on "descended into KITTEN CAVE" xD hahaha love it
If your pet is a reservoir dog, the cave is the _From Dusk Till Dawn_ inn.
Subbed for the lack of baby elephant death. Thanks!!
Watched the 2025 internet apocalypse, which I found interesting and well done, so chose to view another Dr Ben video, this one. I do appreciate skepticism and realistic analysis, and found that I liked the concise explanation and presentation regarding viral reservoirs at Kitum Cave. Finding information that doesn't "hype" and sticks to facts is difficult. So, I subscribed. Looking forward to watching more.
Liked for the reservoir dog joke.
You are so WRONG😂😂😂 . KITUM is in KENYA.
Hey guys, organising a field trip if anyone wants to join me...

Is your Field Trip to Kitum Cave, or for something totally different?
Music at the end?
Xenogenesis-TheFatRat
Some Chubby Emu inspo in that intro 😉
100% yes 😅
@@DrBenMiles Loved the video man! Looking forward to the next 🤩
Dope
Why hasn't anyone tried to find out what is causing this ??
Thank you for not showing a baby elephant tragedy ❤
Why did you end it with that song lol
Are the Kitum Caves in Kenya or Uganda?
Kenya
Outro!
Reservoir dogs. You had to work hard to fit that in, right? 😂
Reason for the entire video 😅
Hey someone addressed the elephant in the room
Not me chilling there cause my parents thought it would be a nice tourist attraction 😭💀
Recommended reading: "The Hot Zone" and "Crisis in the Red Zone" both by Richard Preston. Well written and answers all of the questions posed by the author of this video, who is offering misinformation mixed with some facts.
Hey there!! CONGRATULATIONS PENILESMITH!!!
We can’t wait to hear & read your books and videos regarding your insights into your scientific journey and research!!
You’re a genius
interesting video! keep up the good work, btw I think putting your face in the thumbnail increases click-ratio, at least that's what I think since MrBeast is doing it
Hey! Thanks! I'll give it a go, but also sort of hate it 😂
@@DrBenMiles I can see the social aspect of having a face on the thumbnail, but it also tells me "oh hey look it's MrBeast" for example so it also reminds me of the person which might help, but then again, Veritasium doesn't use his face on all of his thumbnails so I might overrate it
Blow it up
Also I see you read the hotzone which you obviously based much of your video on.
House MD “Teamwork” for proper pronunciation of strongyloides
This is the kind of news that should be spread world wide. The more people that know, the better our chances of finding a solution. When someone gets sick from these viruses the news is world wide. In this age of technology I think there's are people out there who can eradicate these viruses. We don't want to discover too late they figured out how to mutate.
Your geography is wrong the Cave itself is in Kenya
Whereas the Park and Mountain are both in Uganda and Kenya
Quite scary cave with all kind of viruses but elephants eating the salt was quite nice to see expect baby elephants ofc, if there is life it is natural there is death as well! Amazing work, keep it up im sure you would explode soon👏👏
I would agree making titles or thumbnail more interesting as like this it looks a little bit too generic even if your videos aren't at all.
🫡🤬🙏😂🤣👏👏👏👏👏👏🖕🖕🖕🖕

So there IS an Elephant Graveyard, just not the one of legend.
😮😮😮😮
watching the, I would assume a scientist, wearing a mask going through the face, and casually pulling it off to get a better view had me yelling at my screen
Devils kitchen Kodaikanal
Couldn't we somehow vaccinate the bats? To protect them, us, and other species? 🙂
🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
Can the cave be vaccinated??
And of course this is where I find myself today lol watching this after taking an Uber with a Congolese driver! 😮😅🤦♂️
Bat black goo droppings!??!?
Noooo the baby elephants 🐘
Nope I don't feel like bleeding outta my eyes so I'll never visit that cave or country 😅
4:12 dude pulls his mask down in the world's deadliest cave to look at a skull. This is how world wide viruses start

*niemann pick channel intensifies* EDIT: You should do a video on PrP, glutathione, metallothioneins and other cysteine containing compounds in the brain. EDIT: Or do one on the glymphatic system. EDIT: Guarantee you the vector is something silly like a stagnant pool of water somewhere or something that periodically refills/never drains allowing it to grow some narsty pathogens mixed with elephant and bat poop, purely theoretical though.
Cam we get a covid one 😂
@6:21 I believe you want to say "Danish schoolboy" and not "dutch schoolboy" Otherwise great video.
Danish boy, not dutch
dutch isnt danish bruh
im not a fan of all the drama and consipracy, give me the facts
The cave appears to be a source of hemorrhagic fever, such as Marburg or ebola.

I told my know it all ex girlfriend that hot water freezes faster than cold and she said that I was stupid and she got all pissed when she found out I was not wrong.
