Want BETTER bass? Selecting subwoofer size for a ported box - CarAudioFabrication

- Are you trying to determine which subwoofer you should get for your car or truck? If you are doing a sealed design its easy to determine how much volume you have and what subwoofer to pick, but what if you are doing a ported box? An important consideration is to take a few measurements and determine what air volume you have available before you pick a subwoofer size. Once you know what sub size you need and have an idea on the subwoofer box volume you can proceed with a subwoofer box design and a plan to custom build your own custom enclosure.

Say im going with a 1400 watt system, single 12 inch sub in a ported box. What do you recommend?
So what about a vid explaing picking best subs and enclosures for internal car volume. Id like the cheapest (while still being reliable ) setup to almost have the potential to blow a window in my 2005 pontiac sunfire.
Atm i have 2 jbl 1000s in parallel in a ported box in my trunk hooked to a low wattage amp prob putting out 350 rms and 2 planet audio 12 inch dual 4 ohm coil subs hooked to a boss riot 2400d at 1 ohm in reverse polarity to the jbl's. Found out that thats the best mix that that system could do, but my mom has 2 jl audio w3v3-4 12 inch subs in a ported box running at 200 watts rms total in her toyota celica 2004 and she still has twice as much bass as me
Hey caraudiofabrication I've been watching your videos and I think they are great! I'm now gonna add a more custom touch to my original subwoofer enclosure design.I have 2 15inch ssa audio evils and I plan to build my first custom box for them. I designed an 8.5 cu.ft box. But I'm also going to add a plexiglass window custom trim panels and custom lettering. Your videos have inspired me to take it further!
What city as re you located in I would like to get a box designed by you
This is like my ap algebra 2 class. I try and follow along. Get distracted for like 2 secinds and dont have a clue what is happening the rest of the time.
Exactly,... shit i just got distracted again
I appreciate the fact that there's a few car audio channels that explain things in an intelligent, technical manner that's easy to understand.
I hate when I load a video and it starts out like "y'all no wat it is, dis ya boi lil whoop whoop chek how hard dez fifteenz b slammin yo"
I've never seen a video like that.
haha, i luv ur comment!!

I cant begin to explain how much you've helped me over the last few months, thanks again for another great educational video. keep it up and great work.
Happy Friday! I hope this video helps you guys with planning and determining how much air space you have to work with. If you need help with your box design I can make one for you here: goo.gl/8RSC93

Hey bro i got a 2014 Ford Fusion ,what size fits better in my trunk?
+CarAudioFabrication Mark 2 8"s or 2 10"s for a quad cab dakota..
+Joe Gotti In the Ford Fusion, they have a huge trunk, so youd be safe with a single 15, 2 12's or 10's. If you arent to worried about loosing space, if you a space conservative, run a single 12 or 10 and call it good man! (Girlfriend has a Fusion I put a 12" P3 Fosgate in there on 600 rms. Great great set up, I recomend it, but there is also other brands! Do some research and pick what best would best suit your budget and music style!)
Excellent man! I try explaining this to every customer/buddy of mine, but no one ever listens!! This is great. I didnt really think of doing an average like you did! Thats awesome!
Your knowledge and Dedication to car audio is inspiring. Thank you for your time to explain this foreign language to us the best you can, your a dope teacher and thank you, you don’t know how much you help me!
Hey CAF. Can you make a video of better understaning ohms or how to wire to the ohms amp can handle.
Get on Crutchfield. They have diagrams for all your needs.
Some really good points made in this vid. Seems a lot of dudes will just buy subs with no real plan. This is a really easy way of getting an estimation of what airspace there is to actually work with rather than just the overall volume. Good work dude.
+D Torbes This is the point I was trying to make. Thank you!
As always, great video! This would've definitely came in handy when I was designing my box. Luckily, size wasn't really a problem due to being a HT setup. Keep up the awesome work!
Absolutely agree with getting a smaller size to fit the space better. I had two 10" JBL W7s in my truck and never really liked the sound of them. My friend explained that they were too big for the box I had and build me a box for two 8" Rockford Fosgate subs. The damn things rattled my truck with the amount of low end bass they put out. Couldn't get the 10s to do what the 8s were doing. I learned a lot that day that's for sure.
JBL W7s ?
Those subs are teh beats!
Ricky Buffalo he meant JL W7
Question for future video: How to tune LOC and what do you suggest as an alternative to a LOC? Changing out a stock navigation unit isn't always an option and sometimes it is easier to run from the factory sub wiring that is already in the trunk. Thank you and keep up the great content!
Fetty Wap can only divide by 1738, not 1728
That was a severely bad joke
+Jeff Anderson 😂
lmfao what??
yeah babay
no that's his eye vision
very helpful, getting into fab an loving it. have 3 enclosures under my belt now !
great video for getting people ready for the sub design phase of their build.
I need a box for 2x15" What car do I need?
haha
Ford Edge
Ford Fiesta.... so you can fiesta your music to everyone 🤣🤣
Lmao
Chevy Suburban
Great info Mark. I'm sure this will help a lot of people choose their sub more carefully. I can't wait to make a new box for my car. Hoping to get a router table so I can use some of your techniques and make it stand out
+Russ Lyman I'm dealing with this now. I worked in car audio for about 6 years and got a great new job that is also in the automotive industry. I'm wondering if i can offset the cost of a nice router by doing side jobs. I should just buy one and make picture frames, they cost a ton lol.
+riothero313 thats great that you get to work with car audio and cars for a living. I'm just doing it in my spare time. I bought a Ok router a while ago and only have done a few things with it. I manly bought it and a circle cutting jig so I could cut speaker rings and make them flush mount.
I would def benefit from having a router table I just need the room. It would either have to stay at my Moms house or wait till we get a house with more room ha
Russ Lyman
Yeah, I went from the car audio side that had all of the top notch fabricating equipment to the mechanical side that has never even seen a table router lol.
When it comes to estetics this channel is spot on , very cool
thanks answered a question I had for awhile about gross and net airspace I trust your knowledge is correct much appreciated
Superb as always. Very pleased with all of the box designs so far.
after first 30 seconds i didnt know wtf he was talkin bout
thank you so much for this video. it has helped me a ton! I cant thank you enough
doin great dude! im lovin the boxes and help with my project!!
Good vid Mark. I do sorta the same thing. I measure the same way. But to find what I have I just take away 20 percent. And that gives me my air. But, then I have to consider port, sub and brace displacement. Thanks man. Even old dogs learn new tricks. LOL
Great to see someone willing to share the knowledge
Have you got a video on understanding what ports actually do to the tuning of a subwoofer and how to make sure you are tuning into a range of frequencies for your application?
Awesome video thanks for sharing. Wondering if the shape of the box impacts the audio quality of the woofer? For example, will a wedge shaped box sound different to a square box design as long as the air volume and port sizes are matched to the woofer?
Great video, very informative. I'm currently in the design stage of building a (single) 10" sub box for my 2006 Tacoma dble cab. Can't decide whether or not to build a ported or sealed enclosure. Have plenty of room behind the seat for either, just want to do whats best for sound quality.
BILLYBOB 976 got bass?
Hey, heres a question.
i have a frs and since the backseat behind the driver seat is unusuable i was thinking it would look cool to either have a port or a sub face out of the backseat behind me and maybe do a lighting effect or something. but wanted to know if it would be too much trouble to do that please.
With all those precise complicated steps, that bass better be god sent! lol
lol no doubt
School doesn't teach audio fabrication
You didn't even start your sentence with a capital... maybe you should go back to school☺
Calm down man. Hiding behind a keyboard while using the internet to vent your personal frustrations really does nothing for anyone. You had a good point with the geometry proving your point that it is fairly simple for people to figure out and do themselves. But then the rest just makes you look as ignorant as you preach others are being. It's unnecessary and to reiterate, it does not make you sound any more educated. Plus, the rest of us are so damn tired of seeing comments like this. It really ruins any good conversation that is actually taking place here.
+Adam Drake
Well "said", it really does get tiring seeing all the hate that spills from the comment section of CZcams. I do my best on here to be helpful and honest. Then you get the occasional "troll" that just wants to spit expletives at you. I have been directing those "keyboard warriors" to my Facebook page, letting them know they are more then welcome to "friend" me and we can have an intelligent and civil conversation, via Skype or any other VoIP service. Funny thing is they never respond let alone "man up" and show their true identity.
I really appreciate these videos, as a novice car enthusiast your channel is extremely informative in the car audio section, usully the first channel i look to for guides and how tos.
Just found this channel. Excellent content, great presentation and knowledge that even the 'noobs' can understand!
Excellent video as always! I'm currently working on my A-Pillars and would love to see a video on that. Ima have to go to your website and get one of those shirts so I can represent here in Ar.
Bro. You’re are smart. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great video the magic number had me like this 😲 I had no idea it was reduced by so much.
+Aaron Edwards This is the point I was trying to make. :) Now of course you could always get rid of bracing, or reduce the port size and get a little bit more air volume... but then your box may not be as sturdy and may have port air noise issues. It's all a balancing act, hopefully the guideline in the video can help with having a better idea of a true starting point for the airspace so folks can make a good subwoofer decision. Thanks for watching!
great advice, is a mistake i have seen done, thanks for the advice great videos!!!
Great videos man. Definitely subscribed!
I have a 350z and am gonna put subs under the rear strut bar. Its a pretty small 2 door coupe but i have about 3-4 cu. ft. to work with, what do u suggest?
Love the videos. You do great work. I was wondering if you could help me with a design for a chevy tahoe, but the only problem is that I want to keep my 3rd row seat so limited space. Any suggestions?
Hey Mark thank you for the video because I am planning a build in my car and this helps a lot in planning for subs size, size of a box and also considering the space I have to work with in the trunk of my car.
I have a question for you in regards to the car’s electrical system. I have a total of 4000 watts of equipments I need to in stall, my car comes stocked with an alternator that is a 110 amps and a stock batter that is 750 CCA. First question is; 1. Is this enough for the amount of watts I indicated? 2. If it’s not can you give a break down on how to go about upgrading the electrical?
Excellent vid and very insightful. What are your thoughts on sealed subwoofer boxes. Do you have a magic number to calculate airspace? Keep the vids coming very cool.
hello. I just found your channel and the content is very helpful. I will subscribe for sure. I have built a lot of sealed boxes but I have never built a ported one I never was taught why you use them. can you do a video explaining how to size and place one ,or if you have a video already can you point me that way. Thanks for your time, Jeff
i never knew the size went down thank you alot
I have a Cadillac STS and was looking to add more bass with my factory Bose speakers. After seeing this video, I like the patience and precision put into this job. How can I make an appointment?
As always, solid video and great info. Have you ever considered doing a series of videos on OEM integration with head units that can't realistically be replaced? For example, Ford's Sync Touch system which is more along the lines of an "infotainment" system, which has functions that control climate in addition to media and navigation. JL Audio and Audison both make units to integrate OEM head units with aftermarket amps as I'm sure you're aware. Perhaps a series on taking a vehicle from stock to fully custom system while retaining the factory head unit would be a good idea. It occurs to me that the automakers around the globe are not slowing down with adding capability to their head units, which means that this sort of installation might become more ubiquitous as time marches on. Thanks for all of your work and expertise!
i have an Audioson bit ten. works amazing
HEY!!! just subscribed, but Ive been watching your channel for a long time now, I have a sundown Ev312 in a 1.8c.u. q-bomb slotted box powered by a razor 2500watt max class d mono block amp, a pioneer double din head unit, and the boss chaos extreme door and dash speakers for my 96 single cab Sonoma, shit rocks!!!!
what do you recommend about making the port going in to the seat hole
Excellent information right there. Thanks again for a fantastic guide. Can you talk about mid-range speaker selection sometime? Some of the questions I had were: Do I need to build a box for mids? Do this foam baffles work in place of a box? Should I worry about porting a mid, or build a sealed enclosure? How much power do I need for my mids to work with that new subwoofer so that I have the right balance in sound and not too little or to much bass from the subwoofer? Should I worry about placement and the angle to the listeners ear?
+u9Nails These are some great questions for a future video! Thank you!
I have a 350z ever done 2 subscribe and then 1 in the stock placement driver side behind the seat 2nd one behind passenger's seat where storage is. There's a big space back there.
I love all types of music. I like my sealed boxes but Ive thrown my subs in ported. I cant find the best tuning number to keep a good kick awhile simply switching tracks and enjoy some massive boom.
28 Hz will give you maximum sound quality just make sure the sub has an FS or 32Hz or lower.
35hz
You want 35hz to 38hz
I'm trying to build a compact bow for a long profile boss speaker mostly because i have four kids and don't have room to give up. you ever do any hidden sub installs? Maybe i missed that one. Big fan of your videos
great videos. we really enjoy and learn from them here @ México. I am a subscriber, but couldnt find any information in regards of what sub boxes perform better on each type of car. where can I find any advice?
Great videos, they are beneficial. What do you recommend when trying to use a free-air subwoofer setup? I have a 2017 Toyota Camry SE. I just changed the factory head unit to an Android using the factory speakers which will also be altered. I want a moderate to aggressive sound with deep bass.
first off I would like to say thanks for all the great info n tips that are involved in car audio systems.. I have a few questions.
here goes.. I was given a pair of old school cerwin vega stroker 12 both are 4 ohm. but one is svc the other is dvc. my question is would I be able to wire them to the same amp. and if yes how would I go around to doing so.
my other question is the speakers have seen better days.. so with that said I wanna know where I would be able to take them to get recondition or rebuilt. any help with this is very well appreciated and I wanna thank everyone in advance..
Great vid. Thank you for good tutorials. I have a question, which came up with my current project. I'm building a sub box for two RE Audio SRX 12D4. I want to build sloped box - will better fit my trunk. So upper depth is 10 inches, lower 16 inches. WinISD tells me, that i need vent lenght 17 inches - what I need to do to "turn" port in sloped box - if I do "simple" 90 degrees turn it will collide with speaker magnet. Any sugestions?
can you make a video on how to make a box for under the seat on a 2004 tundra access cab and witch subwoofer would work best?
Great video Mark! How does this work with sealed boxes and "slim" subs such as the JL Audio 13tw5v2?
Make a video on wiring subs to amps, to understand ohms
that magic # .55 does help out , thanks
Great video...it will be awesome if you make a video about trucks with no space. How can you help us with that ? Any ideas.? Different than installing them under the back seat...
As usual great vid. How about in the future explain the difference in slot and areo ports?
GJ bro ! good info for beginers that knows "alot" ;)
What would be the loudest setup I could do with third row Yukon
Downfire, or faces up
I was wanting maybe either 1 nasty 10”
Or 2 8’s
hey what's up been watching alot of your videos since u first started and was trying to see what u would recommend for a box design for 03 Ford explorer I was thinking of doing 2 sundown zv3 15s or 2 fi sp4 18s I have good electrical and running a sundown ns1 6500 watt amp. I'm open to slot or aero ports in case the net volume will be more better doing like 2 8 inch aeros etc over the slot port which I know will take up more net volume appreciate the time u take to read this and keep up the awesome work.
I got my 15 firing into my deck lid and it still stomps ass lol and it's in a crappy Pyle wood box and a round pipe port but sounds awesome building a new mdf box soon
thanks for everything yes it would be definitely nice to have a bigger community
u can also have ur radio in reverse bass or normal mode an keep ur sub the same
Can you do a show on prefab boxes and how to make them better. Budget vs. no budget?
Was hoping you have an idea for a box for a wrangler unlimited! I'm looking to do a super custom setup
So on your other video you are building an underseat sub box that fires upward, doesn't that impact the acoustic power over having it forward or rear facing?
Question? What are your thiught on a downfire box for car audio. I know it's has been used mostly for crew cab trucks. Im wanting something a lil bit more unique for a box.
I made this mistake! I had a 12" Sony Xplod P5 in a 2.5 cu ft L-ported box tuned to 30Hz (which I originally thought was 3.0 cu ft as I didn't realise how much volume the port took up) and it slammed lows hard. I already had to cut the hole bigger because the previous owner had a JL Audio 12w7 in it. I then cut the hole even bigger and put a 15" Xplod P5 in it. It was louder at higher bass frequencies but the lows went to shit. Was using a Soundstream XTA480.2 bridged on both. Now I have a 15" to 10" reducer in it with a 10" Alpine Type R off an LW Audio 1.1600 and it sounds better than ever!
Uhh... I have a logitech
Which Logitech?
RWL2012
You could have spaced the subwoofer out with an adaptor ring to regain some box volume and or inverted the subwoofer
I'm going to measure my new ride as soon as it arrives and email this genius
You make some really nice stuff wish you were in my area
hey Mark what's up you have an awesome Channel man I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado extended cab I want to know what would be the best system set up to get the highest quality of bass I'm looking into all JL Audio brand any recommendations
Thanks for the video. You give good quality information. I have a question for you. I want to install two JL w3 subs, either 10's or 8s, under my quad cab truck seat. I found a guy who makes custom boxes for subs near my home and he has forward firing ported boxes, pre fabed. The air space for the 10's are dead on, about 1.22cuft per sub, but the 8 inch box has about 1cuft of space per chamber and the 8 inch w3 JL recommends .35cuft per sub. What would you recommend?
Any recommendations on a setup in an insulated and dynamated cargo van? Wanna beat on the way to the motocross races with the bikes in the back yet. Setup is 4 captains chairs and bikes and gear behind them. It's an F350 extended cargo van. thanks
Happy Friday!! I've been building killer "Sealed" boxes a loooooong time . I want to build a ported box 1 day. Where does the port go, rather front, back or sides
what about down firing the subs into another piece of wood? Example building it to fire downward and building say 2" spacers and then bolting it all together?
Until recently, I've never considered making a custom box from scratch. I've bought premade boxes specific for certain vehicles but I'm not looking to have the best set up, I just want it to sound nice. I just want to know why the majority of premade Silverado boxes are intended to have the subs facing down? It doesn't allow for the subs to have much room to fluctuate and I don't have a lot of money to make my own just yet.
when adding speakers to a hotrod truck not bass but mids and highs do you recommend mounting the rear speakers low on the cab corner or high on the cab corner?
Now the fun begins!!!!
Can you please explain how to get super deep bass quality would love to see a demo, in 1998 some guy had 4 tsp 12” single 4 ohm on trunk deck and those hit very deep and far bass
Hey Mark,
Have a 11' 2500hd with two 10's under rear seat. Im looking to replace 6 1/2's and wanted to know what kind of speakers u recommend for my truck. Front and back doors.
I would like for u to cover wrapping door panels and dash boards. I wanna do mine in ultra suede with the stitching
Need to find out exactly how to match internal car speakers with the correct watt amplifier? I would really like it to be easy is there a website that will just allow you to enter your speaker make and model and then provide you with amps that will work with those speakers?
How do you know what is the best type of port to go with and port volume and port length . I have a few more questions trying to find out . Please do a video on this subject im wanting to build my own box but don't understand the port . The last box I built the port was too long and hit lows really really hard but that was the only time it would hit hard . I'll be housing 2 12" SKAR shallow mounts in a crown Vic
Good info on the page. Have you done a box for a 2000 Ford Ranger super cab in the side seat cubby hole?
So for clarity, in an SUV do I just measure the trunk area? Does it matter than it isn't a separate enclosed trunk like you typically see on a sedan?
In general, is the bigger the box is, the louder/better it is? like if the manufacturer recommends 2.5 cubic ft, would it be better/louder at 3 cubic ft?
definitely need help. plan on upgrading this winter. I have a 69 impala convertible. was thinking 2 12" in trunk, with 1 in each side of quarter panel. I like the jl audio amps only because I have one I. my bike, not sure on speakers but hearing good things on the digital designs... any help would be appreciated
Just bought a skar vvx 15 can u maybe make a vid about that sub and maybe box designs made for that subwoofer
is there also a way to calculate the enclosure size if you already have the subwoofer (bought it used without knowing any parameters but the size...)?
I have two 12" Kenwood Road Series subs in my 2006 Ford Taurus SEL. I hear the trunk rattle louder than the subs at this point
Angel's_Gaming no one care’s what a furry thinks
are you using the outside measurements or inside measurements of the box to start with?
sir .. how to get the box dimentions according to subwoofer size.. i have two 4.5 inch subwoofers of 30W each
my general take: if the woofer size is larger it can reproduce the low ranges better, giving you more low freq base sounds and with more volume? (as long as its in its proper box, airspace, power etc)-if true how do you get more bass from the low end (like 5hz to 30hz) when your airspace would only allow 1 12" or 1 10" woofer?
I am sure there are probably some eq tricks or other means of boosting the lower signals, but that is not the answer I seek.
Hello sir...need a box measurements for single vibe black air 12d2
And for dual black air 12d2's
Ok. So I can always use a smaller sub then the air space I have but not a larger sub then the space? So as long as I make my box with a larger space then what the sub can handle then I will be ok. I don't have to match the space precisely.
Is it required to use a box for any sub woofer or can you directly install it to your mini suv door trunk?
What kind of sub woofers and box would I need for a 05 Pontiac Grand Am
