    Great video, very encouraging. I spent a few hours trying to calculate qb3 box size using the Dickason cookbook 3rd edition. I worked through one of the examples okay. Taking an actual driver, using Qts to select alpha, f3 ratio and H to calculate Vb and Lv, I got numbers that weren’t close to the parts express box volume. In fact, Qts was .57, just past the range on the table! Thanks for the video and putting the calculator out there. I’m hoping to put together a 8-12” subwoofer and this is a great help.

    Excellent thank you, very useful in narrowing down the driver choices, I'd still model the choice fully in WinIsd though to check things like Rear Port Air Velocity. One other thing that would be very useful in driver selection is to know which Ts parameter values are desirable to achieve good bass extension in a reasonable size box. As a beginner for most parameters I don't know whether a higher value is better or worse.

The recommended enclosure from the manufacturer is seal of 4th order but I want to do an areo port enclosure. What are your thoughts

    • @AudioJudgement
      @AudioJudgement  Před rokem +1

      I would do a bass reflex enclosure. 180 liters (volume displaced by braces, port and speaker not included) and port tuned to 20 Hz. If you go for a 6" diameter port, it needs to be 64 cm in length. Problem is that you might run into port noise at very high volumes. 500W you are in the clear. At 1000W you will hear some chuffing. If you make the port larger in diameter, the length requirements become unreasonable. So, either use a 6" aero port and keep it down, or consider a larger slot port. If not, a sealed 80 liter box will also do (not as much low end, though, which is desirable for home theater)

    • @AudioJudgement
      @AudioJudgement  Před 3 lety +2

      I'm not familiar with bassbox pro, and I'm not sure what you're doing. A dual voice coil woofer basically works the same way as a single coil subwoofer. Only difference is that you can wire the voice coils in series or parallel. Regardless how you wire them, Fs, Qts and Vas won't change their values, so there shouldn't be any differences between the excel spreadsheet and bassbox. However, if bassbox thinks that you have 2 voice coils and you connecting just one, and leaving the other one disconnected, then yes, the response should be different. But you are probably not going to do that.

    What should I do.

    • @AudioJudgement
      @AudioJudgement  Před 3 lety

      Positioning inside the room is very important. E neat trick to find the best position is to place the subwoofer in your listening position (on the couch for example). Play some bassy music. Then walk around the room and listen to how it sounds in different spots around the room. In the spot where you find it most pleasing, that is where you should place the subwoofer. Alternatively, if you already decided on the position, and don't want to move it, you can try and reverse the polarity of the speaker wires. It might sound better, but no guarantee.

    • @AudioJudgement

      WinISD shows the correct length. Indeed the formula for calculating port length has a correction factor which is different depending on the type of the port / flare etc (length calculation might differ from app to app). But that only accounts for a very small percentage difference (not 30%). The fact that a slot port is extended by the walls only happens when the port end is near the box corner.

      Also, I can't put my Vas. It converts it to some different value... Not so great at excel I think.

      It’s because you have a speaker with a Qts higher than 0.5

      @@AudioJudgement that’s what I thought. Thank you. Can I believe winisd then or the calculations will be bad?

      @@AudioJudgement no at all, I’m using a pc. Bought some cheap lanzar 15” with hardly any ts parameters listed and currently trying to find out what can I do with it. I’m just experimenting with diy builds, not sure if it’s worth it but for now it’s fun.

    Typed in FS: 34Hz. qTS: 0,59. Vas:63.3L Box volume of 105l and tuning of 34 on the ported box. But nothing happens. I also see that the tabs on the bottom left has locks on them

      You need to enter Ql as well. Usually Ql = 7 for normal box losses. The spreadsheet is protected so you don't mess up cells with formulas. You can remove the protection if you want. The password is just a blank.

    One little thing, didn't allow for the port wall thickness of the 100mm round port :)

      @AudioJudgement  Před 3 lety +1

      You are right, I didn't account for that. But usually that is 3 mm plastic and in most cases that adds up to negligible volume displacement.

    • @st170ish
      @st170ish Před 3 lety

      @@AudioJudgement yes the amount of volume in this case is negligible, but in a small volume enclosure with huge ports this probably would cause a deviation to the "planned" response.
      I've always planned 3 enclosures, one the wanted volume and one a bit smaller the other a bit bigger, this give us an idea of how much inaccuracy we can tolerate before adversely effecting the desired tuning.(be great subject for a future video!)

    Toti vorbiti despre cum sa proiectezi o cutie noua. Nici unul nu vorbeste despre: ai cutia, ai difuzoarele, ce poti sa faci sa le combini ca sa sune bine.
