  • Dr. Philip Sarrel and his team from Yale University carefully examined the data from the "Estrogen-Only Arm" of the Women's Health Initiative. Sarrel's study estimated that at least 18,601 women died unnecessarily because they didn't get HRT after their hysterectomies.

    I was talking to someone the other day who had a complete hysterectomy in 2021. Everything was removed. I asked her if she was taking any hormones, and she said no one ever put her on any hormones, and she was happy about that. I haven’t talked to her since, but I always think about that WHI study 20 plus years ago that really changed everyone’s thoughts on hormone replacement. I’m so glad you’re getting the word out.

    I had complete hysterectomy at age 33. I’m now 67. They put me on estrogen pills right away and when I hit 50’s doctors told me I needed to get off. But I wouldn’t. I was taking 1/2 of 1 mg daily. I suffered from UTI’s since age 16. So a doctor switched me to compounded estrogen cream vaginally twice a week 2 yrs ago. That stopped the UTI’s Then I learned of Dr John Lees books on menopause, progesterone, so now at 67 I have added compounded progesterone cream rubbed under arms. My hormone saliva test showed very low progesterone & testosterone, but estrogen was in the middle of where it should be. I was told I was estrogen dominant, cause of my round apple belly. So needed progesterone to balance it all out. So we shall see what happens. I still use estrogen cream vaginally once a week

      If you still have ovaries, they will produce some estrogen and progesterone. Eventually, those will go away as you move past menopause.

I feel SO anxious, brain fog, muscle and body aches, breast tenderness, digestive problems like constipation... please help me, does it sound like I need estrogen?

    I had partial hysterectomy in Feb 2012. Ovaries intact. When did I start menopause? Is there an estimated time? I'm now 55 and seeing dr this week to get started on bhrt. It can't happen fast enough. I've been so upset that of all the doctors I've seen since 2012, not one brought up the topic to me of hrt. Their inaction has harmed me, I'm afraid. I'm a US Masters competitive swimmer since age 47. Not over weight, but in excellent shape altough my cholesterol has gone up, but not alarmingly so. My good cholesterol is amazing, so I'm happy for that. But WHEN did I go into menopause? It was 3 or 4 years ago that I started having sleeping trouble and increased anxiety, loss of sex drive, fatigue. I just want to know how late I am to the game of beginning bhrt.

    My mother had a full hysterectomy around 1988. She was in her late 40s. She was not given HRT by her gynecologist. Within a few years she developed arthritis. She's now 84, totally crippled with arthritis and bedridden. She also lost her hearing and developed dementia last year. Could this have been prevented had she been on HRT after the hysterectomy?

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @sharminiserasinghe3293 It's hard to say if arthritis could be prevented with optimal hormone levels. The evidence is becoming clearer though that dementia is much higher in women who haven't taken any hormones after hysterectomy.

  • @nohemiwest-phelps534
    @nohemiwest-phelps534 Před měsícem +2

    Is there any difference if you have a full hysterectomy vs still having your ovaries with regard to whether you are considered to be in menopause as a result of the surgery?

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před měsícem +2

      @nohemiwest-phelps534 Yes. There is a difference. If you still have your ovaries, they're most likely still producing estradiol. They may or may not be producing much progesterone, since progesterone mainly comes from the corpus luteum, which is leftover after ovulation. It depends on whether you're still ovulating. The best way to know is to have a hormone panel, testing to see where you estradiol and progesterone levels are.

      That is what I’m taking. But definitely try it, many woman don’t have the GI issues as I did.. we are all different. I take that same oral pill vaginally now, it’s not FDA approved in the US to take that way but in Europe it is! They are way ahead of us when it comes to meds and menopause 😊

    • @SimpleHormones
      @SimpleHormones  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @heathergasol569 Most women with 1 ovary will be able to make enough estradiol and progesterone to get through until that ovary fails at menopause, which it eventually will. If you're having symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, weight gain, etc., then it might be time to have your estradiol level tested to see where you are.

    I had a total hysterectomy because of ovarian cancer, 3 years post-menopause. My cancer is 1A early stage, and is not currently active. Can I ever be a good candidate for HRT? None of my doctors had ever offered it to me, they all basically said the risks outweighed the benefits. I had wondered about this, as I have read the studies and the absolute risks appear low

      The benefits outweigh the risks! Risks of Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, heart disease, arthritis, poor eye health. Estrogen is a POSITIVE to our immune system. The vast majority of women who get breast cancer are menopausal-meaning estradiol did not give it to them. Blessings!

    I desperately need help in finding someone near me who will help with balancing my hormones. I’m a 61 yo woman, had full hysterectomy at age 36. Before that I had a half thyroidectomy. My dr does prescribe estrogen but this is not his specialization. He is saying that unless I have a mammogram yearly he will no longer prescribe hormones. I don’t mind having one every 2nd or third year but do not wish to do this yearly unless I am having a problem. Alzheimers is extremely prominent in my family so hormones are necessary. Years ago a dr I went to took me off all hormones and had some extreme effects mentally. (Memory loss, not in control of my thoughts, zero attention span, could not focus enough to read more than 4-5 words then I’d have to re-read them and still couldn’t remember what I read, I could not focus on driving). I was a teacher and a single mother so I knew something had to be done. I was unable to function normally. I was able to get back on hormones (was only off of them two months, but what a lasting impression). I was also overweight (and still need some work) but feel like hormones/thyroid are still keeping me from losing the last 30 pounds. A year ago I changed my journey. I began walking 4 miles a day, strictly following a keto plan, fasting 18 hours a day and lost 35 pounds. Before and during this lifestyle change I’ve lost about half my hair, it stopped growing, finger and toe nails grow extremely slowly, eyelashes breaking off, hair brittle, lost outedges of eyebrows, fingernail beds have become flat psoriasis has moved from my hands up onto my head,etc etc. If there are any drs. anywhere close (within 2 hours) to me who are truly dedicated to helping, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you!
    I live in Southeast Texas, 1 1/2 hours from Houston.

      @wendyblaauw2578 There are a few different options for hysterectomy. One is a partial hysterectomy that leaves the ovaries intact and removes only the uterus. The second is a complete or total hysterectomy that takes out both ovaries and uterus.
