I’ll never forget around 2017 I had the pleasure to meet the great Kirby Morrow at a con; He was such a kind guy and I asked him if I could record him do a Kamehameha and he made it extra special, and did a “Shakespearean Kamehameha” where he did a funny accent and we had a laugh together!
Sean Schemmel is still my favorite voice. Contrary to popular belief, he got good by the Dragon Ball dub and the handful of episodes he did in the remastered dub. If we bring in other languages, I'd say Mario Castaneda is equal to Schemmel's performance.
Mario Castañeda is a good screamer, but that's all. He is far from capturing correctly the manchild and innocent side of Goku, he sounds a lot old and Supermanish for Goku. Best voices for Goku are Avi Meir (hebrew Goku), Paolo Torrisi (italian Goku) and Su Jin Gang (korean Goku), maybe followed by Wendel Bezerra (brazilian Goku).
I agree Sean Schemmel is the true Goku he does the best screams ever and he’s the most famous voice of Goku bar none your definitely right nothing tops him
Never watched Kai, I grew up with the ocean dub and I'd rather have censorship and scenes cut than sabat doing evil Vegeta, Drummonds Vegeta and mcneils piccolo are just too good to swap out
Why Morrow so low? Kelamis got worse over time, started off fantastic, however with the lesser budget he wasn't as good when they brought the cast back. When Morrow took over it was a relief actually.
@@stuntxl5783 Meh, Morrow sounded quite generic and forgettable to me (Especially when you compared him to most other English VAs). No disrespect for Morrow, but I personally thought he doesn't really suit Goku at all.
Having Gasman over Yuri is crazy ik he worked on a shitty project but the deep voice goku will never work. Having Lex Lang and Peter Kelamis over any of Sean's work is also blasphemous
My favorite Goku voice will always be Sean Schemmel 👑💖💖💖!!! I always hear Mr. Schemmel's voice whenever I think of Goku! However, Mr. Schemmel also did also did other voices too like Lucario from Pokemon: Lucario & The Mystery of Mew, and Sun Wukong from Monkey Kid & Smite!
You guys have obviously never heard him in Spanish... voiced by Mario Castañeda... Goku's voice is beyond violent... so much expression and conviction in his voice... bit clearly... Nozawa is 100% the best... she created Goku-sans character to begin with... everything else... is merely a "translation " of the original work... hands down... she is the one and only...
What I like about Mario Castañeda is just that he sounds natural, only that, most of the Goku english voices sounds kinda artificial If you compare it to the acting on original series or movies from USA.
I dont have a problem with goku japanese voice. I watch goku since the day he met bulma and yamcha. IN THE RIGHT ORDER. Not like i watch starting with Z (farmer shotgun) scene ...then later "how about i watch the early stuff when goku was a child". So when goku is shown as and adult for the first time (at the martial art tournament wearing a turban to hide his spiky hair) ...and still have the same voice...i didnt even realize he supposed to have a man's voice. I was busy starstruck seeing goku already a grown man. Haters always think "goku is voiced by a lady..thats a lady's voice". That is actually one of the unique thing in goku lineage. Goku's bloodline have high pitch voice. That why Nozawa also voiced Bardock....and gohan also have high pitch. (Not as high as goku though...but still we can see he inherit goku and bardock high pitch.).

Definitely Ian James Corlett. He was the one I heard first as a kid and my cousin and I grew up on the cartoon. Plus Sean Schemmel is kind of a douche bag.
I think for me it's Peter Kelamis and the late great Kirby Morrow... (for English at least) Both Goku VA's dealt with a LOT under pressure with their production being a rush job... if dealing with such pressure doesn't make you Goku, I don't know what does... but Masako Nozowa the boss lady herself deserves top spot in terms of the universe, It's like a principal boy in a pantomime if they went badass on everyone.
Ian and Peter sounded similar I thought they were the same person until I saw a video like this. For me Ian is #1 Peter #2 Sean #3. Ian made goku's voice sound so cool.
@Mr T RIP to him, he wasn't there at the time, but I him too like 3rd below those 2. He was phenomenal in gundam wing and was a great Cyclops in x men evolution.
@@DuelingPony Sean had more time to refine his voice. He’s had like what, 25 years? Ian had all of 1, and then he was replaced with Peter Kelamis. Plus, Ian is way better than early Sean. He’s way more chill in the role; not as stilted. And he actually got a somewhat accurate take on Goku, since that was before all the righteous superhero nonsense FUNimation did with him.
Masako Nozawa is boss as Goku. No competition here. However, I always found Ian James Corlett to be my favorite English Goku. Most people see him as superhero Goku but I don’t. He is great at portraying both the serious and goofy sides of Goku. He did great with the goofy moments. His performance as Goku is underrated and overlooked. It’s sucks that he left in Season 2. Peter Kelamis is my second favorite Goku. His voice started out as a impression of Ian’s Goku but he moved away from that and gave it his all. He even sounds like Masako Nozawa at points, especially while screaming. His Saban, Westwood, and movie performances are awesome. He’s a legend. Kirby Morrow (R.I.P.) looking back, I judged unfairly. He killed it as Goku in the Westwood-Ocean dub. He wasn’t the best at it, (Nozawa and Ian are the best IMO), but he gave it his all in the very end. He captured Goku’s character, from a saiyan fighter/warrior to father, and then a grandfather. He rocked while doing the voice of Super Saiyan 3 Goku when he transformed. It sounded badass. Kirby did well as Goku, and I would very much prefer him over.. Sean Schemmel. I know there’s going to be pitchforks. It’s an unpopular opinion of mine. I used to think Sean is amazing as Goku. Now I think differently. He did decent as Goku in Season 3 of the 1999 dub, and he nailed it during the later sagas like the Buu saga, but his performance took a nosedive. Even now, in Dragon Ball Kai and especially in Dragon Ball Super, I can’t buy his voice as Goku. It sounds way too much like a different character, not Goku. The only good thing about his Goku is his screams, but that’s it. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great voice actor, and I do love how he does his voices for villains & other characters like Lucario or Black Doom. To me, he’s just not a very good Goku, and I happen to prefer Masako Nozawa, Ian James Corlett, Peter Kelamis and Kirby Morrow over him. Steve Blum..he’s a great voice actor but a huge miscast as Goku. He should have voiced Vegeta instead. His voice for Goku is very annoying. He’s a great voice actor, but he falls into the same boat as Sean Schemmel: he doesn’t fit for Goku. Lex Lang..he’s another miscast. Lex is not fitting for Goku at all. He would have worked better as Gohan than Goku. Good voice actor but it’s not fitting for someone like Goku. It sounds too fake & cartoony. The others aren’t worth mentioning. I think Ian James Corlett is the best English voice, while Masako Nozawa is the best Japanese voice. Overall.. 1. Ian James Corlett/Masako Nozawa 2. Peter Kelamis 3. Kirby Morrow (R.I.P.) 4. Peter Kelamis is my favourite English Goku. When I think of Schemmel, I usually think of a super powered he-man, which is what Goku is. But when I think of Kelamis, I think of a happy, youthful, energetic, manchild, which is WHO Goku is. I think he's the funniest too.
Indeed, even if Sean Schemel has a great voice for Goku, he sounds too heroic in the serious moments, the same problem as Ian James Corlett. Peter Kelamis even in the most serious moments knew how to keep some of the man child in his interpretation.
Aside from Yuri Lowenthal and Steve Blum, nobody seemed bad to me. Some could’ve had better direction and acting like Gasman, Watson, and Yurk but I think their voices work for Goku.

To me, none of the English voice actors can even compare to Masako Nozawa. Despite what most people say, Nozawa’s voice for Goku fits so well. It’s the voice I would expect from someone like Goku

Sean Shcemel is iconic as Goku and the definitive voice for him..... I think I prefer Kirby Morrow overall. Kirby Morrow was my Johnny Yong Bosch basically. Lex Lang in the Bang Zoom dub is ok. He's not as bad as everyone says he is, I just wish the voice direction was better.
@@virgogaming6488 that was mostly only in the original Funimation dub, which based most of its scripts on the Ocean dub by Saban. Later Funimation dubs though, like the Kai dub and Super would stick a lot closer. GT is GT and the dub for that series barely did anything to keep the original intent. Even still, depending on who you ask, the old Funimation dub could actually be more of a benefit to Goku as a character since he was written to be way less selfish and battle hungry like he is in the original Japanese
@@jf4132 Kelamis is the closest to sounding like Goku in the source material since he modeled his performance on Masako. Sean was only cast in the first place because he sounded like Ian James Corlett who was inaccurate casting but has the honor of being the 1st English Goku. Goku also isn't meant to be a Superman type character even though his origin story is similar. You can like Sean but hes fundamentally inaccurate casting for the character and just stuck around the longest.
@@virgogaming6488 Funny you should mention that because Goku being rewritten to be like Superman was kinda the whole reason Goku was as popular as he was back in the day when DBZ came to Toonami. Essentially, a lot of DBZ's staying power here in the US mostly has questionable localization decisions like this to thank.

Goku's playfulness is supposed to be a bit childish. As much as Ian is the English voice I am used to and expect (and like as English Goku), Steve Blum's comes surprisingly close to what I would imagine Japanese Personality Goku could actually sound like in English. Sean will always hold the dubious honour for me of permanently switching me over to original dubs if available for a game. Despite all that, Nozoma quickly became Goku for me. Nowadays DBZ has turned into Goku going up against LoGH and Gundam icons for me...
I've tried liking Sean Schemmel as Goku, but he is just not good as Goku. I think his voice has gotten rougher for my liking. For English I think Ian James Corlett and maybe Peter Kelamis are the ones I like the most. I remember watching Dragon Ball Z when the Ocean Dub was still available in the USA and I really liked his voice of Goku. It was still young and playful. The best voice for Goku is still gonna be Masako Nozawa. It just fits Goku so that I can't of the character sounding any other way.

This is entirely nostalgia for the Ocean movie dubs talking, but Peter Kelamis at the number one. And let's get controversial; out of all the good performances, Masako Nozawa as the least good when playing adult Goku.

I, who am not familiar with any of this voices, who is used to the Mexican dub, think that the ones that fits the most are Peter Kelamis and Lex Lang (Lex' voice is the most similar to the latin american Goku). Jeffrey Watson only for teen Goku. Sorry, but I don't like the Superman vibe that the other actors give, maybe Kirby Morrow could pass. (And yep, I don't like Sean Schemmel too much when he's talking normally, sounds kinda artificial)
Though to be honest, Watson had some bad acting in certain areas he did grow into the role of Teen Goku, much like Scott McCulloch did with Richter. Jeremiah sounds like Kirby which I like and could’ve had better acting. Gasman’s Rayman voice sounds like what his Goku should’ve been all along. But at times he channels it specifically in the Dead Zone movie.
Nothing can beat the original… nozawa will always and forever be the voice of goku! Will never understand why people prefer the dub to the original version, the dub makes so many stupid changes and even adds pointless things to the original source material. The original version will always be the best and most authentic way to view all of dragon ball!!!
Nozawa Masako for Japanese (of course), and Ian Corlett for English. Steve Blum is honestly not terrible, but just not Goku. Peter Kelamis is probably better than Corlett, but his doing an obvious Nozawa impression hurts his delivery in my opinion. Sean Schemmel is good for the reversioned “superhero Goku” that FUNimation was going for in their older dubs, but when he actually plays Goku like in Kai, other than being loud and screaming, he falls short for me in literally every other category, ESPECIALLY goofy Goku. Kirby Morrow isn’t bad, and his Super Saiyan Level 3 voice rocks, but he’s pretty generic overall. Jeffery Watson sounds like he belongs in a video game, not an official dub of the TV series. David Gasman is good sometimes, but not only does his voice not really fit, his scripts are just ass. Jeremiah Yurk is just…bad. Yuri Lowenthal doesn’t fit, especially Justin Chatwin Goku, but he’s amazing in everything, so I can’t not give him credit. Lex Lang isn’t bad; he’s pretty cozy as Goku.

She’s been doing it for decades in comparison to the american voice actor and she’s doing Goku’s voice with pure justice when in fact she is one of the golden standard in the Japanese animation voice acting industry. It is a matter of preference but her performance was the most essential part on how the other foreign voice actors of Goku grap his character and therefore made her performance a blue print on how to take on the character properly.

Here from the video on the Western dubs. WOW! I'm pretty surprised people actually liked the Ocean dub voice for Goku. He sounds like a teenager going through puberty. Sean's actually seems like Goku, the playfulness and excitability are key to his personality
Ian Corlett had a youthful carefree voice that remains consistent and has great acting and he can pull off Goku’s non serious moments without sounding dumb.
Regardless of my personal feelings towards Sean Schemmel, I’d be lying if I said he wasn’t the best Goku VA. Shout out to his performance in DBZ Kai and Battle of Gods
all controversy aside, sean schemmel is my favorite goku voice i just feel the particular voice he gives to goku and his performance really captures the overall character, im finna get a lot of heat for this but personally i think he's a better goku than masako nozawa.....as an actor that is!.....if only he didn't do whatever he did that got people to rip on him all of a sudden

I was busy starstruck seeing goku already a grown man. Haters always think "goku is voiced by a lady..thats a lady's voice". That is actually one of the unique thing in goku lineage. Goku's bloodline have high pitch voice. That why Nozawa also voiced Bardock....and gohan also have high pitch. (Not as high as goku though...but still we can see he inherit goku and bardock high pitch.).

I think for me it's Peter Kelamis and the late great Kirby Morrow... (for English at least) Both Goku VA's dealt with a LOT under pressure with their production being a rush job... if dealing with such pressure doesn't make you Goku, I don't know what does...
but Masako Nozowa the boss lady herself deserves top spot in terms of the universe, It's like a principal boy in a pantomime if they went badass on everyone.

Plus, Ian is way better than early Sean. He’s way more chill in the role; not as stilted. And he actually got a somewhat accurate take on Goku, since that was before all the righteous superhero nonsense FUNimation did with him.
Masako Nozawa is boss as Goku. No competition here.
However, I always found Ian James Corlett to be my favorite English Goku. Most people see him as superhero Goku but I don’t. He is great at portraying both the serious and goofy sides of Goku. He did great with the goofy moments. His performance as Goku is underrated and overlooked. It’s sucks that he left in Season 2.
Peter Kelamis is my second favorite Goku. His voice started out as a impression of Ian’s Goku but he moved away from that and gave it his all. He even sounds like Masako Nozawa at points, especially while screaming. His Saban, Westwood, and movie performances are awesome. He’s a legend.
Kirby Morrow (R.I.P.) looking back, I judged unfairly. He killed it as Goku in the Westwood-Ocean dub. He wasn’t the best at it, (Nozawa and Ian are the best IMO), but he gave it his all in the very end. He captured Goku’s character, from a saiyan fighter/warrior to father, and then a grandfather. He rocked while doing the voice of Super Saiyan 3 Goku when he transformed. It sounded badass. Kirby did well as Goku, and I would very much prefer him over..
Sean Schemmel. I know there’s going to be pitchforks. It’s an unpopular opinion of mine. I used to think Sean is amazing as Goku. Now I think differently. He did decent as Goku in Season 3 of the 1999 dub, and he nailed it during the later sagas like the Buu saga, but his performance took a nosedive. Even now, in Dragon Ball Kai and especially in Dragon Ball Super, I can’t buy his voice as Goku. It sounds way too much like a different character, not Goku. The only good thing about his Goku is his screams, but that’s it. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great voice actor, and I do love how he does his voices for villains & other characters like Lucario or Black Doom. To me, he’s just not a very good Goku, and I happen to prefer Masako Nozawa, Ian James Corlett, Peter Kelamis and Kirby Morrow over him.
Steve Blum..he’s a great voice actor but a huge miscast as Goku. He should have voiced Vegeta instead. His voice for Goku is very annoying. He’s a great voice actor, but he falls into the same boat as Sean Schemmel: he doesn’t fit for Goku.
Lex Lang..he’s another miscast. Lex is not fitting for Goku at all. He would have worked better as Gohan than Goku. Good voice actor but it’s not fitting for someone like Goku. It sounds too fake & cartoony.
The others aren’t worth mentioning. I think Ian James Corlett is the best English voice, while Masako Nozawa is the best Japanese voice.

Peter Kelamis is my favourite English Goku. When I think of Schemmel, I usually think of a super powered he-man, which is what Goku is.
But when I think of Kelamis, I think of a happy, youthful, energetic, manchild, which is WHO Goku is. I think he's the funniest too.
Indeed, even if Sean Schemel has a great voice for Goku, he sounds too heroic in the serious moments, the same problem as Ian James Corlett. Peter Kelamis even in the most serious moments knew how to keep some of the man child in his interpretation.

Sean Shcemel is iconic as Goku and the definitive voice for him..... I think I prefer Kirby Morrow overall. Kirby Morrow was my Johnny Yong Bosch basically.
Lex Lang in the Bang Zoom dub is ok. He's not as bad as everyone says he is, I just wish the voice direction was better.
Sean has played Goku one of the longest but he isn't accurate to who Goku is in the source material. So hes far from definitive.
@@virgogaming6488 that was mostly only in the original Funimation dub, which based most of its scripts on the Ocean dub by Saban. Later Funimation dubs though, like the Kai dub and Super would stick a lot closer. GT is GT and the dub for that series barely did anything to keep the original intent. Even still, depending on who you ask, the old Funimation dub could actually be more of a benefit to Goku as a character since he was written to be way less selfish and battle hungry like he is in the original Japanese
@@jf4132 Kelamis is the closest to sounding like Goku in the source material since he modeled his performance on Masako. Sean was only cast in the first place because he sounded like Ian James Corlett who was inaccurate casting but has the honor of being the 1st English Goku. Goku also isn't meant to be a Superman type character even though his origin story is similar. You can like Sean but hes fundamentally inaccurate casting for the character and just stuck around the longest.

Essentially, a lot of DBZ's staying power here in the US mostly has questionable localization decisions like this to thank.

Goku's playfulness is supposed to be a bit childish. As much as Ian is the English voice I am used to and expect (and like as English Goku), Steve Blum's comes surprisingly close to what I would imagine Japanese Personality Goku could actually sound like in English. Sean will always hold the dubious honour for me of permanently switching me over to original dubs if available for a game.
Despite all that, Nozoma quickly became Goku for me. Nowadays DBZ has turned into Goku going up against LoGH and Gundam icons for me...

I've tried liking Sean Schemmel as Goku, but he is just not good as Goku. I think his voice has gotten rougher for my liking. For English I think Ian James Corlett and maybe Peter Kelamis are the ones I like the most. I remember watching Dragon Ball Z when the Ocean Dub was still available in the USA and I really liked his voice of Goku. It was still young and playful. The best voice for Goku is still gonna be Masako Nozawa. It just fits Goku so that I can't of the character sounding any other way.

Steve Blum is honestly not terrible, but just not Goku. Peter Kelamis is probably better than Corlett, but his doing an obvious Nozawa impression hurts his delivery in my opinion. Sean Schemmel is good for the reversioned “superhero Goku” that FUNimation was going for in their older dubs, but when he actually plays Goku like in Kai, other than being loud and screaming, he falls short for me in literally every other category, ESPECIALLY goofy Goku. Kirby Morrow isn’t bad, and his Super Saiyan Level 3 voice rocks, but he’s pretty generic overall. Jeffery Watson sounds like he belongs in a video game, not an official dub of the TV series. David Gasman is good sometimes, but not only does his voice not really fit, his scripts are just ass. Jeremiah Yurk is just…bad. Yuri Lowenthal doesn’t fit, especially Justin Chatwin Goku, but he’s amazing in everything, so I can’t not give him credit. Lex Lang isn’t bad; he’s pretty cozy as Goku.
