NYCKNP actually I asked Daman about how he sounded close to Ayers. And he told me that Chris didn’t teach him how to voice him. All he did was watch episodes which featured Chris’s Frieza and he just practiced imitating him.
Grew up with Linda Young but Chris Ayres is just so damn good as Frieza. Hearing about his health really made me sad. Good to see Daman Mills doing good though.
Definitely Linda Young. I grew up with her. The reason why i edit is that whoever you heard first most of these actors and actresses were pretty good. Whoever your first impression you will remember that one as your favorite. The good ones really invested in playing the evil frieza and they did well.
I grew up with Linda Young’s Frieza and I honestly didn’t like a Chris Ayres’s Frieza when he first started. It was so different, but I got used to it over time, especially with Super, and now he’s the best Frieza imo. Rest In Peace Chris.
Pauline Newstone is underrated in the comments. She actually put forth a solid voice archetype that was later refined by Linda Young. Chris Ayres definitely nails Nakao's poise the best.
THIS. Seriously, the others simply imitate her and I honestly think her cadence and the way she delivers certain sounds is perfect. She got the character so well and I will never be able to handle Ayres poor imitation or any other for that matter.
The reason I like Pauline's take on it so much is because it has a creepy alien vibe mixed with sophistication which is exactly what it should be. Chris's version is still the best but her version is definitely a runner up.
But her voice acting for frieza makes frieza sound like a female. But the one voice she did good on. Btw its the only other voice i’ve heard her voice is when she voiced Aspheera from ninjago season 11

If you ask me they voiced Frieza perfectly they are my favorite Frieza voice and based on Frieza’s personality they were the best choices to dub Frieza

Chris Ayres sounds PERFECT as Frieza. He has a nice alien sinister sounding tone that sounds more like a male. Linda Young was good at the time but her voice made Frieza sound like a witch and was the biggest reason for making his gender ambiguous
I like Linda voice because it was so terrifying when done right and now the current voice is just all male and he sounds like he's having fun all the time compared to I'll murder everything in a blink of an eye, both are great but the intention of the performances seems different IMO
She wasn't the best frieza but that line was amazing and showed just how callous and brutal Frieza was. As a kid I almost went SS myself hearing that line.
Pauline Newstone did a great job back in the day. That being said, Chris Ayers will always be my favorite. He was able to take the character to where it needed to be for the English dubs. He gave Frieza the evil sophistication that Ryusei Nakao originally brought to the character
He's the original and has the mutual respect for everybody, giving a good performance all around. But it's always Linda vs Chris Ayres that's the more interesting convo.
I think nobody talk about him because he's obviously the best here, and also because he's not an english voice actor so the comparison is less interesting, but he really is the best here it's not even a question
@@madeinsound08 No. it's not him being the best (I prefer Chris Aryes). We can't understand Japanese, so we can't truly judge it like we would with English performances. If I understood japanese, I would be able to judge the guy properly instead of going it only in tone.
My favorite thing about Chris Ayers and especially Ryusei Nakaos Frieza is how he uses polite flowery language for the most of the namek saga. Almost to the point where it feels patronizing and insulting. Because of that it feels so much more frightening when he starts cracking in the late namek saga, he starts yelling and swearing and insulting his opponents.
Top 3 Linda Young (she’s the true OG Frieza and still the best Frieza in my opinion. love the original old raspy Frieza voice and what I grew up on. She played him very well) Chris Ayers (he became the perfect Frieza after Linda and brung the true Frieza to life) Daman Mills (he’s a Chris Ayres 2.0 and you couldn’t tell them apart literally. He killed it phenomenally)
She was great, but she's just imitating Pauline Newstone, or trying to be as close to her voice as possible as to avoid a jarring change when the Ocean dub changed to Funimation during the original run. Newstone was the first voice of Frieza we heard on our screens in the western world before they made the switch from Ocean to Funimation. But I agree, I really like the raspy, feminine, reptilian Frieza they both portray, it really goes well with the androgynous character design and adds a whole lot of creep factor.
Well, who's here after getting the news? I'm in shock. I can't believe Chris Ayres is gone... but at least we still have Daman Mills. He'll be a great Frieza. Rest in peace, Chris...
What sells me on Chris Ayers is how his cadence is almost on par with Ryusei, with a touch of Linda's bravado/insanity added in when Freeza loses it. RIP Chris.
Linda Young and Chris Ayers’ Friezas are like Ryan Drummond and Jason Griffith’s Sonic. You’ll always love the OG but the next guy just comes in and blows everything away. You still respect both as they are
I'm really lost as to how Chris Ayers' performance as some British guy was that great, but everyone just seems to love him except me. Personally to me, Little Kuriboh did the best British Frieza, but imo British Frieza only belongs in something like a parody so it makes sense there.

@@OGStarlightKY Yeah it's just preference. My problem with it was Chris made Frieza feel to me more stereotypically evil if that makes sense. It was less unique, and the Britishness of it felt out of place to me. To your point, when I think of Frieza sophisticated isn't one of my defining words for him, so it's just a different presentation of the character that I enjoy more. Not that he isn't sophisticated, it just isn't one of the main descriptors that pops to mind for me personally. I think more mystery, confidence, and sadism, and I simply enjoy Linda's portrayal of those qualities. Linda's voice made Frieza feel like a fresher and more authentically alien type of villain I hadn't heard before.
@@SonTaicario I agree that sophisticated doesn't mean British, which is one of the many reasons I find the accent out of place for the character. I also agree with your second statement, which I why I think sadism is a defining trait that comes to mind for me. I don't necessarily equate sadism with sophistication, but you raise the argument of a death beam being an art form of torture. I still think much more along the lines of pure sadism than some form of sophistication, but it wouldn't be a characterisation I outright disagree with. Just not what immediately comes to my mind.
RIP Chris Ayres. his work as Freeza was phenomenal, and he's my personal favorite english voice for the character. Daman Mills was also a great understudy, and assuming they choose him as chris' successor, he will do great in the role as well.
